Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the multi-sector contribution to efforts to preserve the Javanese language in Wonosobo Regency, (2) identify inhibiting and supporting factors, and (3) describe strategies to increase the use of Javanese among the younger generation. This research method employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a case study design. Data collection through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies. The research location is Wonosobo Regency, with respondents from the Permadani Pawiyatan Institute, the Tourism Office, and UNSIQ. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis with the help of the NVivo application. This study shows that the preservation of the Javanese language in Wonosobo is the result of a multi-sector collaboration. Permadani plays a role in both the practical and cultural aspects. The local government provides regulatory support and resources, while UNSIQ strengthens the academic aspect. Inhibiting factors: the lack of binding regulations, low motivation of the younger generation, and the dominance of the Indonesian language. Supporting factors: the commitment of related institutions, local policy support, and the role of higher education. The synergy of the three sectors is expected to ensure that the Javanese language remains a proud part of the younger generation’s identity in Wonosobo.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the utterances of marginalized characters in Okky Madasari’s Pasung Jiwa and Kerumunan Terakhir as performative acts containing resistance to dominant social structures. This research is a qualitative descriptive type with a feminist approach. The research data consists of narrative excerpts, monologues, and dialogues containing performative utterances. Data collection was carried out through intensive reading. The analysis focused on how these utterances form performative acts in the character’s social context, and function as discursive practices that reproduce or challenge norms of identity and power. The results of the study show that language is not merely an expression of personal experience, but a form of performative act that contains resistance to dominant social structures. The language in the characters’ utterances can be used as a means to restructure the social order. Through the concept of linguistic performativity by Austin and Butler, the language spoken by the characters is present as a tool for negotiating meaning and power. Language becomes a space of resistance that challenges the boundaries of social norms, challenges the truth claims conveyed by the majority, and invites readers to see reality from other perspectives that tend to be marginalized.

Abstract

This study examined how the English for Nusantara textbooks represent identity and politeness in fostering students’ sociolinguistic competence across multiple grade levels. Using a qualitative case study design with content analysis, the study analyzed 93 identity-related words and phrases from all texts and 208 politeness-related utterances drawn exclusively from scripted dialogues. The findings indicate that the textbooks promote national identity through the incorporation of local names, places, foods, address forms, and other cultural references into English discourse. In terms of politeness, the textbooks contain 19 bald-on-record, 170 positive politeness, 18 negative politeness, and 1 off-record strategy, with positive politeness emerging as the dominant strategy that fosters solidarity, approval, and cooperation in peer interactions. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the English for Nusantara textbooks represent learners’ sociolinguistic competence through language identity and politeness. However, this representation remains partial and requires further development to more comprehensively capture uniquely Indonesian identities and a broader range of politeness strategies. This highlights the need for more comprehensive cultural content and more varied interactional contexts, encompassing both formal and informal interactions that reflect authentic language use.

Abstract

The personality of characters in literary works does not merely reflect social reality but also demonstrates the complex inner dynamics of human beings. Such complexity is evident in the main character of the novel Unit Gaib Darurat by the Tim Kisah Tanah Jawa, who exhibits various archetypes and personality-shaping factors. This study describes the archetypes of the main character as well as the factors influencing the structure of their personality. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method through an objective approach. The data consist of excerpts from the novel containing archetypes and personality-forming factors. The data analysis process includes stages of collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity testing conducted through theory and source triangulation. The results show 45 data points of archetypes, comprising Persona (11 data), Anima (8 data), Shadow (18 data), and Self (8 data). The Shadow is the most dominant archetype, depicting the character's dark side and inner burdens. Additionally, 33 data points of personality factors were found, with the environment being the dominant factor influencing the character's perspective and emotional responses. These findings confirm that the dynamics of a character's personality are formed through the interaction between psychological structures and life experiences within the narrative.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparative impact of three strategies, namely digital reading, dialogic reading, and traditional reading, on students' receptive and expressive language skills, story comprehension, and causal reasoning abilities. A quasi-experimental method was used involving 252 students aged 7—11 years. The instruments used were assessments of language skills, story comprehension, and causal reasoning. Descriptive data analysis and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used in this study. The research findings showed that language skills (receptive and expressive), story comprehension, and causal reasoning in the dialogic reading group showed the most significant improvement compared to the digital reading and traditional reading groups. Improvements in receptive language skills were seen in the ability to listen to stories critically and use new vocabulary. Improvements in story comprehension skills were seen in the level of plot understanding. Causal reasoning skills were seen in the ability to analyze causality between events in the story. Improvements in all skills occurred because the dialogic scaffolding (open, semi-open, and prompting questions) encouraged students to continue thinking critically and actively express their ideas.

Abstract

The majority of people in remote areas have low literacy levels that hinder their employment, so literacy training for adults is needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of reading literacy training based on texts and local cultural practices on the community’s reading and life skills. A quasi-experimental method was used involving 225 people living in Wanayasa District, Ciawi Village, Purwakarta Regency, West Java Province. Data were collected through reading ability tests and interviews. Data analysis used descriptive analysis, paired t-tests, ANOVA, and effect sizes. The results of the study indicate that literacy training based on discourse and local cultural practices can improve the community’s reading and life skills. Improved reading competency includes increased reading comprehension, increased reading motivation, decreased reading anxiety, and decreased cognitive load. Furthermore, thematic analysis of interview results showed that literacy teaching interventions increased knowledge that supports employment, reading comprehension, and life skills. Therefore, literacy training based on discourse and local cultural practices can improve the community’s reading comprehension and life skills. This study implies that adult literacy training should be integrated with content needed to support life skills.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the need for modified wayang beber teaching media in speaking and cross-cultural comprehension learning for beginner-level BIPA learners from China based on the perspectives of learners and teachers. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach involving eight beginner-level learners from Xi'an International Studies University, China, and three teachers from Indonesia University of Education. Data collection was carried out through literature study, interviews, observation, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques by condensing, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The study found four dimensions of needs: learners' needs regarding the characteristics of wayang beber media, the needs of wayang beber media in facilitating speaking skills, the needs of wayang beber media in cross-cultural understanding, and teachers' needs regarding the use of wayang beber and folk tales. Data triangulation from both perspectives produced a comprehensive profile of needs, including: presenting the story of Malin Kundang with clear and complex visual designs; integrating speaking and cross-cultural understanding learning through structured discussions on cultural values, comparisons between Indonesian and Chinese cultures, and reflective questions to develop learners' empathy; and comprehensive implementation covering print and digital media, guidelines for teachers and learners, assessment tools aligned with competency standards, and multimedia support materials.

Abstract

This study discusses Aan Mansyur's digital poem entitled TETAPI, TIDAK uploaded via the Instagram account @apoetographer. The background of this study stems from the phenomenon of poetry that combines literary style and visual elements on Instagram. The purpose of this study is to reveal how literary style as a verbal aspect and visual aspect of poetry resonate. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a stylistic approach by Pradopo (2021). The results show that Aan Mansyur uses language style to emphasise social criticism and moral awareness. The visual element of purple-green colour gradation reinforces the reflective and contemplative atmosphere. The conclusion of this study confirms that Aan Mansyur's digital poetry presents verbal and visual resonance, namely the harmony between the power of language and visual elements that reinforce each other in building an aesthetic experience. This resonance shows the transformation of the function of poetry in the digital era from a mere medium of expression to a reflective, empathetic, and humanistic space that unites words and colours in a single contemporary aesthetic consciousness.
