Abstract

This study aimed to improve the ability and interest of tenth-grade students at SMAN 13 Surabaya in performing tembang macapat within the context of Javanese language learning through the integration of the E-Srambahan application. The research employed the Kemmis and McTaggart classroom action research model. Data were collected through performance tests, observation, questionnaires, and interviews, involving 36 students from class X-2 with diverse cultural backgrounds. Quantitative analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25, including Levene’s Test and paired sample t-test, complemented by descriptive analysis. The findings revealed significant improvement in vocal performance, covering pleng (pitch accuracy), ngeng (rhythmic consistency), and greng (vocal strength). The students’ mean score increased from 64.7 (pre-cycle) to 74.3 (cycle I) and 83.2 (cycle II), while the mastery level rose from 25% to 91.7%. The paired sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000, confirming meaningful differences across cycles. The effectiveness of E-Srambahan was attributed to students’ improved interest and ability to imitate pitch, maintain rhythm, and enhance vocal projection. Challenges related to low self-confidence and limited vocal technique were successfully addressed through structured practice with the application. These results highlight the importance of integrating digital media grounded in local wisdom to enrich Javanese language education.

Abstract

Weak inheritance of local languages within the family domain leads to language shift. Consequently, the phenomena of code-mixing and code-switching among children and grandchildren exhibit inconsistent and random patterns. This study aims to determine the status of local languages and identify the causes of language shift within the family environment, focusing specifically on the shift from Javanese to Indonesian. The subjects of this study consist of three generations: (1) generation 1 includes grandparents, (2) generation 2 includes parents, and (3) generation 3 includes children or grandchildren. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, utilizing interview, observation, and note-taking techniques. The results indicate a significant shift from Javanese to Indonesian. For instance, when generation 2 addresses generation 3 in Javanese, generation 3 responds in Indonesian due to a lack of Javanese vocabulary. Generation 3 only masters simple Javanese terms, such as mpun, dereng, and wonten. This phenomenon is driven by education levels, economic status, social mobility, language attitudes, and the influence of technology and social media. The shift is further evidenced by the emergence of random code-switching and code-mixing in daily family conversations.

Abstract

The need for children's literature that aligns with developmental stages and integrates cultural values is increasingly urgent to support contextual literacy. This study analyzes the alignment of manuscripts from the Ministry of Education's reading material competition with official leveling guidelines. Employing a qualitative approach with literature analysis, ten manuscripts from the 2023 Central Java Language Center competition were selected via purposive sampling. Analysis focused on three aspects: linguistics, content, and format. Regarding linguistics (complexity, organization, style, and predictability), most manuscripts complied, yet issues in structural complexity and organization weakened readability. In terms of content (genre, familiarity, and vocabulary), although genres were appropriate, rapid pacing and indistinct characters diminished developmental familiarity, while cultural vocabulary lacked explanation. Regarding format (length, typography, and layout), manuscript length was generally adequate, but inconsistencies in typography and illustration remained. The study concludes that the manuscripts fail to fully meet the leveling guidelines essential for child-friendly curation.

Abstract

This study examines the planning and implementation of differentiated instruction in literary writing at the senior high school level. The primary focus is how teachers respond to students’ varying interests and learning styles during the instructional process, as these individual differences necessitate adaptive and responsive instructional planning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a multiple case study design, this research was conducted at two public senior high schools with distinct geographical and student characteristics. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results indicate that teachers conducted diagnostic assessments to identify students’ readiness, interests, and learning profiles, which served as the foundation for designing instructional modules. These modules incorporated content differentiation through varied examples of short stories and hikayat in both visual and audiovisual formats. Process differentiation was implemented by grouping students based on their interests and learning styles and by offering choices in writing themes. Furthermore, product differentiation allowed students to submit their work in either print or digital formats. The implementation of differentiated instruction demonstrates teachers’ efforts to create inclusive, engaging, and student-centered learning environments that effectively accommodate diverse learner needs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the linguistic expressions in the Nutuk Beham ritual speech, which is part of the oral tradition of the Kutai Adat Lawas community. The speech contains folk tales and cultural symbols that have been passed down from generation to generation in the rice harvest ritual. This study uses an ethnolinguistic approach with a descriptive qualitative method. Data was obtained through direct observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and ritual practitioners, and oral documentation collected during the traditional ceremony. The results of the study show that the Nutuk Beham ritual speech contains a distinctive linguistic structure in the form of repetitive and rhythmic oral poetry. It contains symbolic narratives about the origins of rice and stories of sacrifice that form the mythological basis of the community. These linguistic expressions embody values such as respect, responsibility, and religiosity, and reflect ecological wisdom rooted in the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and food. This study affirms that the Nutuk Beham ritual speech is not merely a cultural heritage but also an educational medium for transmitting noble values within a local context.

Abstract

This study examined the diverse approaches doctoral students take to developing an academic voice when utilizing AI. It examines the manifestation of academic integrity and agency, as well as the interplay among these constructs, through a case study. Thematic analysis, as a data analysis tool, from the responses of six doctoral students enrolled in the Proposal Dissertation Course, sheds light on the critical acceptance of AI. The results of the focus-group discussion and students’ reflective journals reveal that AI is recognized as applicable but does not replace human critical thinking in the manual investigation process. Research shows that students build academic identity through strategies such as making AI a discussion partner to maintain the author’s voice. They also maintain academic integrity by verifying AI sources, avoiding unreal citations, and manually paraphrasing the text. Students leverage AI for technical tasks and time management yet remain non-reliant and edit AI output to ensure it remains original work.

Abstract

The essay poem Ki Ageng Selo: Sang Penakluk Petir by Sri Penny has been used as teaching material for poetry writing for students at MAN 1 Grobogan. However, the structure of the essay poem is suspected to show a distance from cultural aspects. The issue that arises is whether the structural phenomena in the essay poem are appropriate to be used as teaching material. This research was conducted through a literary sociology approach using a heuristic-level semiotic method for data validation and a hermeneutic-level reading for the analysis of literary, social, and cultural rules. The research data consisted of excerpts from the lines of the poem suspected of containing ideology, as per the research problem. The research results are based on the use of Bourdieu's cultural arena theory, revealing a dialectic between 'kewahyon' and 'keprabon' as well as the matrix as the center of meaning. In the cultural aspect, the matrix can be understood through actual and potential hypogrammatics. The figure Ki Ageng Selo experiences a tension (dialectic) between ambition and expectation. The study concludes that the essay poem Ki Ageng Selo: The Conqueror of Lightning can be recommended as learning material for the younger generation of the nation.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether the IKN-related discourses produced by the Indonesian government constitute a green narrative that promotes ecological conservation and protection or are merely greenwashing strategies designed to gain public acceptance. Fifty-two articles taken from the Indonesian government’s official website about IKN, https://ikn.go.id/ are the data source of this research. Utilizing AntConc and NVivo software, the researchers investigate the word frequency of environmentally related lexical choices and complete an analysis of the six-taxonomy of greenwashing. The results reveal that five greenwashing strategies are prominent: attention deflection, deceptive manipulation, decoupling, selective disclosure, and inefficient public voluntary programs. These strategies reflect the gap between environmental claims and actions, with the government focusing on technological solutions while downplaying or omitting critical ecological issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and indigenous displacement. This research makes a valuable contribution to the field of ecolinguistics by emphasizing the need for a critical examination of governmental environmental narratives, particularly in situations where ecological claims are used to justify large-scale development. This analysis could be further developed in the future by integrating indigenous perspectives, ecological data, and longitudinal monitoring of IKN's environmental impact.

Abstract

Karangsong is the largest fishing village in Indramayu. The Karangsong community, dominated by fishermen, has a distinctive linguistic identity reflected in the lexicon of maritime activities understood only by the local coastal people. Therefore, it is important to explore this lexicon as an effort to document the linguistic wealth of the Indramayu coastal community. This study aims to: (1) describe the linguistic situation of the Karangsong community; (2) identify the lexicon of fish names, fishing transportation, ship parts, fishing equipment, and fishing activities; and (3) explore the cultural portrait of the Karangsong community. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnolinguistic approach. The data consist of the linguistic activities of the Karangsong coastal community collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires involving captains, boat builders, fishermen, and local residents. The results show that: (1) the Karangsong community has a wide variety of marine lexicon understood only by Indramayu’s coastal people; (2) this lexicon appears in the naming of fish, boats, boat parts, fishing tools, and activities; and (3) besides distinctive linguistic characteristics, the Karangsong community also holds beliefs, traditions, and folklore that shape their cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how Indonesian social and cultural ideologies are linguistically represented in the Sahabatku Indonesia BIPA 2 textbook through a Critical Linguistics perspective. The ideological dimension in textbooks, particularly how social, moral, and national values are constructed through language choices, has rarely been studied in depth, necessitating an analysis capable of uncovering the role of language as a means of representing symbolic power in textbooks. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Critical Linguistics analytical framework developed by Fowler. Data were obtained from reading texts, dialogues, and exercises in each learning unit and then analyzed at three levels: lexical choice, syntactic structure, and ideological discourse forms. The results show that this textbook consistently represents national values such as mutual cooperation, social harmony, cleanliness, modernity, and cultural nationalism. These values are conveyed through evaluative vocabulary choices, simple declarative and imperative sentences, and narratives that frame Indonesia as a developed, harmonious, and morally sound nation. This finding confirms that BIPA textbooks play a dual role: as a pedagogical tool and a cultural diplomacy tool that strengthens Indonesia’s image in the eyes of the international community.
