Abstract

This study examines the use of address terms and their relational functions in the dialogue between characters in Chapter 1 of Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women using a pragmatic-sociolinguistic approach. Language in literary works not only functions as an aesthetic medium, but also as a medium for representing social relations between characters that are constructed through specific linguistic choices. The research data consists of 43 dialogues between characters that contain explicit and implicit forms of address. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using dialogic utterances as the unit of analysis, rather than isolated sentences, in order to capture the relational meaning in context. The results show that address terms in Little Women appear in various forms, such as kinship terms, personal names, affective forms of address, and forms of address without explicit lexical forms. These forms serve to build and negotiate emotional closeness, solidarity, family hierarchy, and social control between characters. The analysis also shows that relational functions are not static, but dynamic and dependent on the context of interaction and the development of relationships in the narrative plot. These findings confirm that literary dialogue can be treated as a valid social communication practice for linguistic analysis. This research contributes to the development of literary pragmatics by integrating the analysis of address terms and relational functions in the context of classic children's literature, which has been studied more from a thematic and ideological perspective.

Abstract

This study tested the effectiveness of a snakes and ladders game-based learning medium in improving student learning outcomes at Tsanawiyah Benteng Huraba. The background was limited learning facilities and infrastructure, which required teachers to be creative in improving teaching quality. The method used was a combination of meta-analysis and a quasi-experimental design. The snakes and ladders game was chosen as a medium to reduce boredom and increase student engagement. The results showed significant improvement. Before the intervention, only 55% of students achieved scores above the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KMA). After implementing this medium, all students (100%) successfully surpassed the KMA, representing a 45% increase in learning outcomes. These findings confirm that the use of game-based learning media facilitates material understanding, increases learning motivation, and ultimately optimizes student academic achievement. This study concludes that the snakes and ladders game is effective as an innovative alternative to addressing limited resources and improving the quality of classroom learning.

Abstract

This research highlights the importance of learning English from an early age as a response to the challenges of globalization. English is key to accessing technology and global knowledge, emphasizing the need for students to master it from an early age. Vocabulary plays a crucial role in speaking, reading, writing and listening skills in English. Limited vocabulary can hinder comprehensive abilities in the language. This research uses the Classroom Action Research (CAR) classroom action method to investigate the effects of the Quizizz game in increasing English vocabulary in elementary schools. In two cycles, there was a significant increase from pre-test 60% to 94% after the first cycle, with the majority of students reaching or exceeding the school's KKM (70%). Quizizz is proven to be effective in increasing student interest and engagement with its competitive features and attractive design. This tool creates a fun learning environment and reduces boredom in learning. Students get immediate feedback and can track their progress, while teachers can monitor learning progress efficiently. The implications of this research suggest the use of interactive learning platform such as Quizizz in teaching English vocabulary in elementary schools. This can increase learning effectiveness and strengthen student motivation. This research also contributes to the understanding of game-based learning methods in the context of language education. Overall, this research provides practical guidance for teachers to integrate technology in English vocabulary learning in elementary schools, as well as providing a basis for further research in the development of game-based learning.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis singkatan dan akronim yang ada dalam teks Al Jamiatul Washliyah.Pemilihan data dari Teks AL’Washliyah. menarik karena sejak lahir 1930 sampai sekarang singkatan dan Akronim menjadi dinamika proses pembentukan kata yang ada dalam teks Alwashliyah  Focus penelitian ini mengkaji bahwa singkatan dan akronim telah digunakan sejak tahun 1930, tahun berdirinya al jamiatul Washliyah sampai sekarang. Singkatan dan akronim yang fungsinya adalah untuk memudahkan  mengingat kata kata yg Panjang dan keenakan bunyi kata. Singkatan dan akronim  juga merambah ke dalam teks Al’ washliyah.  Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pendahuluan untuk data yang lebih besar lagi ( penelitian lanjutan / Tahap 2 ) , kajian ini menemukan 40 singkatan dan akronim yang menjadi dinamika struktur setara kata dalam teks Al jamiatul washliyah, baik dari buku buku, artikel dan berbagai web yang ada dalam lingkup Al jamiatul washliyah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kwalitatif yang mengamati data apa adanya.Kajian Morfologi ( pembentukan kata ). Dengan pendekatan Linguistik , yaitu menganalisis suatu struktur Bahasa dalam hal ini singkatan dan akronim. Setelah data terkumpul di klasifikasi berdasarkan struktur bentuk masing masing kategori: yaitu singkatan dan akronim yang merupakan bahagian dari Abreviasi. Hasil dan pembahasan dari kajian ini menemukan adanya singkatan yang telah di pakai sejak berdirinya Al Jamiatul Washliyah pada tahun 1930 yang berfungsi untuk menyingkat kata yang Panjang seperti MIT = Mahtab Islamiyah Tapanuli, dan agar mudah untuk diingat. Serta AL’ Wshliyah merupakan akronim singkatan dari AL jamiatul Washliyah, selain untuk menyingkat juga untuk keenakan bunyi dan mudah di ucapkan . Sedangkan Singkatan dan akronim yang ada akhir akhir ini, seperti BEM  merupakan Badan eksekutif Mahasiswa ( Singkatan ). Dan SIAKAD merupakan Akronim dan singkatan dari   Sistem Informasi Akademik.

Abstract

This research analyzes the avoidance strategies of taboo words in Batu Gara Village, Sumedang, through Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory of myth. A qualitative design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving five key informants and six villagers. The findings reveal that the myths embedded in taboo words such as Maung (tiger) and Péot (skinny) directly shape the community’s avoidance strategies. The belief in supernatural consequences (rain, lightning) naturalizes the myth, while historical normalization through generational transmission empties the reality of its history. The primary avoidance strategy of lexical substitution (e.g., Kerud for Maung) functions as a Barthesian ex-nomination to neutralize dangerous histories, while politeness rituals (punten) reinforce the myth’s authority. This research concludes that taboo word avoidance is not merely a linguistic prohibition but a semiotic performativity that perpetuates traditional ideology and social order.
