Abstract

This study examines the complexities surrounding the Empowerment of coastal communities amidst conflicting elite interests, mainly focusing on the political-economic dynamics of cold storage management in Puger Kulon, Jember Regency. Utilizing descriptive qualitative research methods, data were gathered from coastal community leaders, local government officials, and fishermen. The findings reveal significant challenges stemming from cultural and economic factors in empowering coastal communities. The presence of interest groups seeking to maintain influence exacerbates these challenges. The power struggle between politically influential figures and external investors leaves the community disadvantaged. While the government aims to maintain regional stability, its limited authority impedes effective action. The inability to implement large-scale empowerment initiatives or delegate responsibilities due to a high conflict of interest among entrepreneurs hampers efforts to enhance fishermen's welfare.

An approach to harmonizing digital literacy concepts, conducting periodic surveys regarding the digital literacy index every year, being an initiator in creating a digital literacy landscape, making the digital literacy curriculum an essential part of a sustainable program, and including more measurable targets in responding to misinformation. At the same time, increasing the digital literacy index in Indonesia in 2023 will become a fundamental strategy as a form of prevention in preparing for the Indonesian nation's annual activities, namely the general election in 2024.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the community's response to the practice of cultural da'wah by Dai Muhammadiyah in Palembang City. The research approach used is qualitative, descriptive-exploratory. The informants were community leaders, religious leaders, Muhammadiyah members and Muhammadiyah leaders. Data collection methods use observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. This research concludes that first, the concept of cultural da'wah from Muhammadiyah's perspective is none other than that Muhammadiyah uses culture as a medium for da'wah, thus the concept of cultural da'wah is based on: a) friendly, b) polite, c) courteous, d) civilized, e) tolerance, f) not hate, g) educate, and h) help. Second, the implementation of Dai Muhammadiyah's cultural da'wah is principally through existing local cultural forms such as kenduri culture, thanksgiving, recitation in the community, Islamic holidays, nasyid art, the art of reading the Koran, calligraphy, martial arts, and the art of archery. Third, the public's response to the cultural da'wah practices carried out by Dai Muhammadiyah, both from community leaders, religious leaders, Muhammadiyah residents and Muhammadiyah leaders, on average they responded quite well because Dai Muhammadiyah when giving his lectures did not touch on furu'iyah issues, did not demean the congregation and seeks to educate society and Dai Muhammadiyah gives lectures based on arguments and rationality. And fourth, the reason for acceptance is because Dai Muhammadiyah is rational in the material presented, it is also based on propositions and there is rhetoric, on average the material presented is actual. For those who reject it on the grounds that if culture and religion are mixed, they are worried that syncretism will occur because preaching is firm, straightforward and clearly does not need to compromise with the culture of society, saying that what is right is right and what is false is false.

Abstract

This study investigates organizational communication's role in achieving superior accreditation at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UIN-SU). The research method used is mixed, with a survey-based quantitative approach using questionnaires to collect data from UIN-SU students, lecturers, and teaching staff and a qualitative approach through interviews with universities that have achieved superior accreditation. Data were analyzed using statistical analysis techniques and path analysis with moderating variables. The results showed that UIN-SU achieved a "B" (Superior) accreditation rating, which reflects a commitment to improving the quality of higher education services. The effectiveness of internal communication and the quality of external communication played a crucial role in achieving this feat. However, the participation of academic community members in decision-making did not have a significant impact, indicating the need to increase their participation and role in the accreditation process. In order to achieve higher accreditation in the future, UIN-SU needs to focus on improving organizational communication, supportive organizational policies and culture, and allocating adequate resources to support accreditation efforts and improve the quality of higher education.

Abstract

This article explores and explains the struggle for the health market carried out by shamans and doctors in the Dutch East Indies. This health history research uses a sociological approach, using Michel Foucault's discourse theory of power as the unit of analysis. This article argues that shamans and doctors are not born and developed identities in a vacuum. They arise from conflicting social structures. Initially, this struggle between doctors and shamans never happened in the Dutch East Indies, especially in the Mangkunegaran area; they operated in different markets. The king who ruled in one of the Vostenlanden regions gave equal recognition to both as an entity in health. However, the spread of a new discourse about standardized hygiene, which continued to be promoted by the colonial government through European doctors, made people rethink their treatment choices. As discourses about cleanliness spread, scary stories also circulated about the failure of shamans to treat their patients. This situation has made the health market landscape in Vostenlanten begin to change. The discourse of cleanliness is constantly pushed into society, creating complicated interactions between shamans and doctors. On the other hand, religious organizations and Islamic studies, which initially did not discuss hygiene and health, began to become significant places to discuss, practice, and spread the combination of Javanese and Islamic culture in hygiene.

Abstract

The traditional village festival demonstrates the essence of unity values, catalyzing social cohesion within the community. Various cultural manifestations, such as customary deliberations, traditional ceremonies, and local arts performances, signify the underlying social system. This study aims to elucidate the social cohesion among the Kondowa-Dongkala community through the village festival in Buton. Employing a qualitative research method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants, including Parabela Anamohane and local community members actively involved in the festival proceedings. The findings reveal that the village festival is an annual event, preceded by a village deliberation to establish customary laws governing community behavior on land and sea. Conservation efforts are evident in prohibiting marine resource extraction within the kaombo area for one year, followed by communal utilization during the festival. Each night is marked by local art performances featuring traditional drumming and dances by various age groups, underscoring the village festival's cultural richness and social cohesion.

Abstract

This study aims to decode the symbolic communication conveyed through offerings during the Besagh arrival procession in the wedding customs of the Mesuji Lampung clan residing in Banjar Margo, Tulang Bawang District, Lampung Province. Although numerous studies have highlighted the role of offerings in Indonesian wedding cultures, there is a notable research gap regarding the symbolism within the Besagh procession of the Mesuji Lampung clan. This research is important as it reveals the traditional values and local wisdom embodied in the offerings, strengthening the community's social and familial bonds. The theoretical framework of symbolic communication is employed to analyze the meanings embedded in the offerings. Conducted qualitatively in Banjar Margo District, the study uses Snowball Sampling to select informants. Data gathered from these informants were analyzed through an interpretive approach to derive deep insights into the symbolic meanings of each offering. Offerings, integral to wedding processions across Indonesian cultures, symbolize the commitment and involvement of both parties. Families express values, aspirations, and social relations between clans through these offerings. For instance, kemingan (mat) symbolizes simplicity and blessings in the household, while lemang (glutinous rice) signifies unity and the strength of marital bonds. Using traditional materials honors tradition and reinforces familial and communal ties. Thus, this study reveals how traditional materials in the Besagh procession convey respect, prayers, and blessings from extended families to the prospective couple, reflecting unity, loyalty, prosperity, and respect within marriage.
