Abstract

This study is a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group design aimed at understanding the characteristics of island-based students and examining the impact of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method on these characteristics. The characteristics of island-based students in this study are analyzed from cultural, social status, interest, motivation, and cognitive development aspects. The sample consists of 14 students, with 8 students in the experimental class and 6 students in the control class. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling based on specific characteristics deemed relevant to the study. The research findings indicate that during the learning process, students from Karampuang Island were highly enthusiastic and actively participated in lectures. The analysis of the average N-Gain score shows that the experimental class (Problem-Based Learning method) achieved 85.3%, categorized as effective. Since this value is ≥ 0.70, it falls within the high category, meaning that the effectiveness of using the Problem-Based Learning method for island-based students is high. Meanwhile, the average N-Gain score for the control class (conventional learning method) was 38.7%, categorized as ineffective. Therefore, it is recommended that future researchers explore alternative teaching methods that align with the subject matter and student characteristics to enhance learning outcomes and create a more active, effective, and efficient classroom learning environment.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of integrating Instagram captions within the Discovery-Based Learning framework on enhancing writing skills and student motivation. Grounded in the principles of student-centered learning, the research aims to address challenges in writing proficiency and motivation among tenth-grade students at SMKN 2 Rejang Lebong, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed, where the experimental group engaged in Instagram-based writing activities, including caption creation and peer feedback. In contrast, the control group followed traditional teaching methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to assess writing skills, complemented by a motivation questionnaire. The results revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s writing skills, particularly in vocabulary, sentence structure, and coherence. Moreover, the experimental group demonstrated a marked increase in motivation, indicating that Instagram captions effectively engage students. The findings highlight the potential of leveraging social media platforms like Instagram to enhance language learning, providing a more interactive and student-centered approach. This study underscores the importance of integrating technology into educational practices to foster greater student engagement and motivation. The results suggest that when used within the Discovery Learning model, Instagram can significantly improve writing proficiency and intrinsic motivation, offering a modern, engaging method for enhancing learning outcomes. Future research could investigate the long-term effects of such interventions and explore additional digital tools to support student development in writing skills further.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of errors made by students in working on geometry questions of the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) type according to Newman's stages in terms of cognitive style. The method used in this research is qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out through cognitive style tests, geometry test questions, and unstructured interviews. The instruments in this research were the GEFT test and the MCA type geometry test. The research took place a junior high school in Tasikmalaya, the subjects in this research were class IX students who had consistent cognitive styles and made different mistakes. The data analysis techniques used are according to Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data presentation and verification. The findings from this research were that Field Dependent subjects made mistakes at the understanding, process skills and encoding. The contributing factors are that they did not master the material, were not being careful in calculations, and were not used to checking answer results. Meanwhile, Independent Field subjects made mistakes at the process skills and encoding. The causal factor is that they were not used to doing large number calculation operations. The implications of this study suggest that teachers should design differentiated learning strategies that consider students’ cognitive styles to minimize specific types of errors and enhance overall problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

This study explores the role of choir activities in fostering character development and cooperative learning among elementary school students at a Christian school in East Nusa Tenggara. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observations, documentation, and informal interviews with students and teachers involved in the choir program. The findings reveal that choir participation significantly enhances students’ social and emotional development, musical skills, and personal discipline. Students learn cooperation through group rehearsals, where each individual’s voice contributes to the overall harmony, instilling a sense of responsibility and teamwork. Regular practices and public performances help students build confidence, manage emotions, and express themselves creatively. Furthermore, involvement in competitions such as singing competition provides a platform for real-world application of their skills, reinforcing values such as perseverance and collaboration. The choir also serves as an inclusive learning space that supports the growth of various talents and promotes positive peer relationships. The study suggests that choir activities are effective in supporting the holistic development of students and should be integrated more broadly into educational programs to cultivate not only artistic talent but also essential character traits. These findings have implications for the implementation of character-based and culturally responsive education in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the correlation between corrective feedback, students' motivation, students’ speaking performance, and how they interplay with each other. The researcher used a mixed-method, a qualitative and quantitative design. The sample of this study was 34 third grade students of SMAN 1 Tirawuta. In collecting data, questionnaires, observation, and interviews were used. The findings showed that (1)there is a significant correlation between corrective feedback and students’ speaking performance, indicated by sig 2-tailed 0.005. (2) There is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and students’ speaking performance, indicated by sig 2-Tailed 0.003. (3) There is also a significant correlation between corrective feedback and students’ motivation and students’ speaking performance simultaneously, indicated by sig 2-tailed 0.003. The correlation between corrective feedback, students’ motivation, and students’ speaking performance were in the gravity of moderate level, R 0.559, and the R square was 0.313. This implies that 31.3 % variation of students’ speaking performance can be predicted through corrective feedback and students’ motivation, while 68.7% can be predicted through other factors. Last but not least, (4) Teacher’s feedback motivated students through their errors in improving their speaking performance

Abstract

The use of interactive learning media is increasingly popular as a solution to improve student learning outcomes. However, limited research is still exploring the influence of game-based learning media, such as Kahoot, at the elementary school level, especially in the Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subject. This study aims to test the effect of using Kahoot on the learning outcomes of fifth-grade students in the IPAS subject at SD Negeri Larangan Barma 1. The method used was an experiment with a pre-test and post-test design involving two groups of students: the experimental group using Kahoot and the control group using conventional learning methods. The results showed that Kahoot significantly improved student learning outcomes compared to the control group. These findings support the theories of constructivism and intrinsic motivation and indicate that game-based learning media can increase student motivation and engagement in learning. The practical implications of this study are that integrating digital learning media such as Kahoot can be an effective alternative to improve learning outcomes in elementary schools. However, challenges related to infrastructure and the digital divide need to be considered in its implementation. Further research with larger samples and extended periods is required to confirm these findings.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to foster a culture of reading literacy through reading corners for grade VII students at SMPS St. Petrus Lokatadho. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this study were 30 grade VIII students of SMPS St. Petrus Lokatadho. The data collection methods used in this study were observation, interview and documentation methods. The data in this study were analyzed using the Milles and Huberman model data analysis technique consisting of 1) data collection, 2) data reduction, 3) data presentation and 4) drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed that through the use of reading corners, it had a positive impact on improving students' reading literacy culture. This was shown through an increase in the frequency of students' reading recorded in the questionnaire results after the reading corner was utilized optimally. Thus, it can be concluded that the reading corner plays an effective role as one of the strategies to improve the culture of reading literacy for grade VII students at SMPS St. Petrus Lokatadho.
