Abstract

Cilegon City, widely recognized as an industrial hub, faces challenges in promoting more inclusive local economic growth, making the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) based on traditional products increasingly important. One of the local potentials is gipang, a traditional snack made from glutinous rice or cassava, which carries both cultural value and economic opportunities. This study aims to design and implement a community empowerment model through gipang product innovation to enhance MSME production capacity, quality, and competitiveness. The research method involved identifying key problems, collecting primary data through surveys and interviews, conducting both qualitative and quantitative analyses, and designing an empowerment model that included hygienic production training, product diversification, modern packaging design, digital marketing, and limited-scale pilot testing. The findings reveal a positive trend: production increased from 1,200 kg in 2020 to 2,600 kg in 2024, while sales rose from IDR 180 million to IDR 440 million. MSMEs involved in the intervention recorded a 20–30% increase in turnover within the first six months and began creating new employment opportunities. These results demonstrate that gipang-based empowerment not only raises household income and community skills but also strengthens Cilegon’s cultural identity. Therefore, developing gipang MSMEs can serve as a relevant strategy for economic diversification amid the dominance of heavy industry, and is recommended to be sustained through institutional strengthening, continuous innovation, digitalization, and integration with the tourism sector.

Abstract

Community service carried out in Randupadangan Village, Menganti District, Gresik Regency stems from issues of low production capacity, poor product quality, and conventional marketing strategies in traditional cake businesses. Partner businesses, managed by local micro-entrepreneurs, face challenges due to limited production equipment, poor hygiene practices, and limited digital market penetration, requiring a structured intervention. This program is designed with a Participatory Learning and Action approach that actively involves partners in every stage of the activity, from problem identification to solution design to evaluation. Interventions are made through the procurement and use of Appropriate Technology, such as semi-automatic drying ovens and large-capacity deep fryers; training in hygienic production techniques; packaging improvements; and digital marketing training with social media and marketplace integration. The results of the activities show a 30% increase in production capacity, a 30% increase in business assets, and a 60% increase in partner skills in operating tools, production strategies, and digital marketing, accompanied by a 20% increase in online sales. These achievements not only improve process efficiency and product quality but also strengthen the competitiveness of partner businesses by enhancing brand identity and expanding market access. This program demonstrates that integrating appropriate technology and participatory digital strategies can serve as a sustainable empowerment model for traditional culinary MSMEs, though the limitations of mentoring time and the scope of product diversification remain challenges to be addressed in future community service.

Abstract

The management of inorganic waste, particularly aluminum can waste, remains a significant challenge across many regions in Indonesia. The consumption of canned products continues to rise, yet the waste management systems in place have not kept pace with this growth. Used cans are commonly discarded as trash or sold to scrap collectors at low economic value. In reality, when properly processed, these materials can be transformed into high-value raw materials for creative products. The target beneficiaries of this program are economically productive household industries, which continue to face key constraints in two critical areas: production and marketing. To address these challenges in a practical and sustainable manner, this community engagement program has been designed to improve the efficiency of aluminum can waste utilization within household production systems. Our partners are home-based aluminum artisans who, despite their productivity, currently lack access to simple, appropriate technologies to process aluminum waste effectively. As a result, the proposed solution involves designing and implementing training programs to develop recycled stoves from aluminum cans. These stoves serve not only as innovative, marketable products but also as a contribution to climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract

Legal awareness regarding patient and healthcare provider rights and obligations remains low, particularly in rural areas of Indonesia. The enactment of Law No. 17 of 2023 on Health has reshaped the legal framework governing patient-healthcare relations, highlighting the need for community education. This community service project aimed to enhance both the public's and healthcare professionals' understanding of their rights and responsibilities under the new law while promoting a participatory health law culture. A participatory approach was employed through interactive lectures, focus group discussions, and the distribution of an educational booklet titled "Rights and Obligations in Healthcare Services." Evaluations using pre- and post-tests and in-depth interviews demonstrated that participants' legal knowledge improved from 42.3% to 85.7%, awareness of patient rights violations increased by 58%, and understanding of professional accountability among healthcare workers rose by 61%. These findings indicate that community-based legal education effectively enhances legal literacy and fosters stronger ethical and legal relationships between patients and healthcare providers.

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia. Low awareness and participation in early detection programs such as Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Pap smear contribute to the high incidence of advanced-stage cervical cancer. The Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) cadres play a crucial role as community health agents in promoting cervical cancer prevention and early detection. This community service activity aimed to strengthen the capacity of PKK cadres in Ciroyom Village to educate women on early detection of cervical cancer through health education and screening using VIA and Pap smear tests. The program consisted of three stages: coordination with the Women’s Health Division (Pokja IV), an interactive educational session delivered by an obstetrics and gynecology specialist accompanied by pre- and post-tests, and voluntary VIA and Pap smear examinations conducted by medical professionals. A total of 35 cadres participated, and 18 (51.4%) underwent screening. The mean knowledge score increased significantly from 82.92% (pre-test) to 88% (post-test) (p<0.05). All participants had negative VIA results (100%), while Pap smear results showed 17 participants (94.4%) were negative for intraepithelial lesions or malignancy (NILM), and one participant (5.6%) showed ASCUS (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance). The results indicate that health education effectively improved cadres’ knowledge and awareness.

Abstract

Vocational education that combines theory and practice has been proven to be effective in improving students' skills, particularly in preparing them for the challenges of the working world. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the materials and practices used in the production of effervescent moringa powder on students' understanding at SMK Bina Dharma Pratama. The research design used was quasi-experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study began with a pre-test to assess students' initial knowledge, followed by the provision of materials and practical training in the production of effervescent moringa powder. After the activities, the students were given a posttest to measure their increased understanding. The study's results showed an average score increase from 53.75 (pre-test) to 63.75 (post-test), or approximately 18.6%. This increase indicates a significant learning gain. Despite variations in student results, this finding suggests that practice-based learning can enhance students' technical skills and conceptual understanding in pharmacy. This study contributes to the development of educational methods that integrate theory and practice to enhance students' practical skills and to the implementation of experiential education in vocational training.

Abstract

Turmeric is a herbal remedy with a million benefits that has been used by Indonesians for centuries. Tenaru Village, one of the villages, produces a lot of turmeric annually in Gresik Regency. However, this turmeric is sold only as a cash crop or a simple product at a low price. This program aims to provide training for Tenaru village farmers to create innovative turmeric-based products to increase their selling value. Furthermore, this program aims to increase participants' understanding of safe food packaging as part of safe, high-quality food products. The program's success was evaluated quantitatively, showing a statistically significant increase in pre- and post-test scores. The qualitative assessment using Bloom's taxonomy analysis showed an increase in participants' abilities, from not knowing to being able to teach other people in that village. This indicates that the program has had a significant impact on participants' ability to develop innovative turmeric-based instant beverage products.

Abstract

The tofu industry is one of the soybean-based food processing sectors that generates liquid waste with high organic content. Kunir Kidul Village in Lumajang Regency is one of the centers of small-scale household tofu production, where most producers still lack adequate waste management systems. This community service program aims to improve local residents’ knowledge and skills in processing tofu wastewater into liquid organic fertilizer through fermentation with effective microorganisms (EM). The activities were carried out through stages of socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation, involving tofu MSME owners and local farmer groups. Liquid organic fertilizer was produced by mixing tofu wastewater, molasses, EM-4, rice-washing water, and additional organic materials, then fermenting for 14–15 days using an airlock system. The fermentation process produced a dark-brown liquid fertilizer with a fresh aroma and a pH of 4.5–6.5. The resulting product can be applied to plants by soil drenching or foliar spraying and has been proven to enhance the vegetative growth of chili and mustard plants. This activity not only reduces the potential for environmental pollution but also creates new business opportunities based on a circular economy model, supporting the implementation of sustainable agriculture and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the village level. Furthermore, the program contributes to achieving the SDGs, particularly SDG 2 through increased agricultural productivity, SDG 6 through reduced liquid waste pollution, SDG 8 through the creation of new economic opportunities, SDG 12 through the implementation of circular economy practices, and SDG 13 through reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers.
