Abstract

Community based tourism is one of the tourism development models that makes the community the main actors in its development. As an institution formed to empower the community, BUMDes Bejo has a business unit focused on tourism development. This research aims to elaborate on the role of BUMDes Bejo in developing community based tourism through the Banyu Rancang tourist attraction from its inception to the present. The research uses a qualitative descriptive research method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques in this research include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The principles of Community Based Tourism (CBT) and Anthony Giddens' Structuration theory are used to analyze the results. The research results show that the role of BUMDes in developing community based tourism in Torongrejo Village is not optimal, attributed to the unclear BUMDes structure since the pandemic and a lack of suitable human resources to manage it. Despite BUMDes having a limited role in its development, Banyu Rancang tourism is still being developed with the support of the Torongrejo Village Government and the Batu City Tourism Office. Based on the significance, domination, and legitimacy structure in the development of Banyu Rancang tourism, it is concluded that several stakeholders involved, including tourism managers, youth organizations, the Torongrejo Village Government, and the Batu City Department of Tourism have played their roles well through the support and motivation given to advance Banyu Rancang tourism.

Abstract

Tourism institutions are organizations involved in tourism development in a destination. The interactions between tourist institutions are frequently characterized by dynamism, leading to the emergence of favorable collaborations as well as unfavorable conflicts. A plethora of research has been conducted on tourism institutions, but, the majority of these studies have focused mostly on rural regions. This study provides a new perspective on analyzing models of institutional tourism partnership in urban settings, focusing on a case study conducted in the Setu Babakan Betawi Village in South Jakarta. This study, employing data from interviews with local community, observation, and secondary sources, determined that the collaboration among local communities, regional government, community organizations, and the private sector produced a beneficial synergy for the Setu Babakan Betawi Village destination, leading to its success in winning the 2021 Indonesia Tourism Village Awards. The findings of this study have practical applications for rural areas and other tourist destinations, highlighting the critical need for collaboration among tourism institutions to promote local tourism based on cultural potential.

Abstract

It has become increasingly common to develop the ecosystem of mangrove into a tourism product. Such trend is also seen in Indonesia, including the coastal part of Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta Province. However, as the case of other tourism niches, the development of mangrove-based tourism more often than not is facing myriad challenges. This brief research paper aims to identify the challenges related to mangrove-based tourism development, by using Kulon Progo mangrove areas as a case study. Based on data gathered from observation, GIS mapping, semi-structured interviewing, and literature study, this research finds that conflicts have been occurring in the development process of mangrove-based tourism in Kulon Progo. Conflicts related to local-to-local relations, intergroup competition, destination management, and tourism income distribution have been hindering the tourism development process. Given the main findings, potential conflict resolutions may include stakeholder collaboration, product innovation, and paradigmatic shift to shy away from mass tourism development model. This research contributes to the body of literature on mangrove tourism by adding the issue of tourism conflicts into the debate.
