Abstract

This study aims to reveal the influence of the Western romanticism movement on the psychological style developed by Maḥmūd ‘Abbās al-‘Aqqād in assessing and understanding Arabic literary works in the modern era. This research is library research using the analytical-descriptive method. The result of this study shows that the psychological trend of al-‘Aqqād’s criticism is strongly influenced by the romanticism movement. Romanticism is a revolutionary movement in the artistic, literary, and intellectual fields that emerged in Europe as a form of resistance to the conditions around the 18th century. This movement emphasizes the individuality aspect to highlight the liberation of feelings and emotions. This aspect of individuality then became the basis of al-‘Aqqād’s criticism in assessing literary works which, according to him, were full of individual personalities. Thus, the psychological trend in Arabic literary criticism developed by al-‘Aqqād cannot be separated from the immense influence of the romanticism movement that emerged in the West. The results of this study increasingly show the significance of the West's role in the development of Arabic literary criticism in the modern era.

Spirituality poetry generally contains elements of beauty and aesthetics, so it tends to display linguistics and literature. Sa‘dūn’s poetry has its uniqueness with spiritual content in it. Spirituality in Sa‘dūn’s poetry describes the close relationship between man and God, which is reflected in the form of criticism of society. Therefore, this study aims to determine the form of spirituality in Sa‘dūn’s poetry. This research method uses content analysis by using Ibn ‘Arabī’s hermeneutics approach in its interpretation. The results of this study indicate two things, namely: (1) essence of death in the first poem contains three important pieces of advice, namely life in this world, life in the afterlife, and prepare for death; and (2) essence of ma‘rifah contained in the second Sa‘dūn’s poetry shows Sa‘dūn’s closeness to God as evidenced by two things, namely zuhud and world prevents towards Allah. This study is important in expanding the study of Ibn ‘Arabi’s hermeneutics which is usually only used to interpret the inner meaning in the Qur’ān and ḥadīth. Hermeneutics can also be used in other literary works such as poetry, novels, short stories, etc.

Abstract

Story poetry as a branch of the big tree of poetry and literature in Abbasid era, is one of the important tools for discovering historical facts. This study showed that ‘Alī ibn al-Jahm can be considered one of the pioneers of this literary art in the Abbasid era. He paved the way for poets to depict history in this format and create novel works in this era and immortalize those historical events. By analyzing each element of the story in ‘Alī ibn al-Jahm’s chapter “Creation of Adam”, this study has proved that this work is a story poem and also tries to determine the poet’s goals from the order of this work for the audience. The results of this study show that the aim of ‘Alī ibn al-Jahm in this poem is to teach the teachings of Islam to the audience and people of his time in addition to retelling the events and history of the prophets. Considering that ‘Alī ibn al-Jahm was a court poet and praiser of the caliphs of Banī ‘Abbās, probably the aim of the poet is also to teach a lesson from the caliphs and also the behavior of the prophets and the ancients.

Abstract

This research stems from environmental problems at Arrisalah Islamic International College (Pondok Modern Arrisalah Program International), Gundik, Slahung, Ponorogo, East Java, in creating a language environment that is thought to have something to do with proficiency in Arabic language skills. This study aims to describe the relationship between the language environment and the language skills possessed by students. The type of research used in this study is quantitative with correlational methods. The data collection techniques used observation, interviews, and tests on 59 people. The results of this study indicate that the relationship between them is powerful and is shown by the correlation coefficient calculation that the significance value of the correlation t count (0.810) is greater than the indication value of the correlation t table (0.250). These results indicate that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) proposed is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, which means a significant relationship exists between the two variables.
