Abstract

Alcohol regulation remains a significant challenge in contemporary Islamic public policy because it intersects with religious norms, public health, social protection, and community welfare. This study examines how maqāṣid al-sharīʿah can be operationalized as a framework for alcohol regulation and social development. Using a qualitative case study in Probolinggo City, Indonesia, the research combines normative-conceptual analysis, policy document analysis, literature review, and semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders. The data were analyzed thematically to identify relationships between Islamic legal objectives and regulatory strategies. The findings demonstrate that effective alcohol governance should extend beyond prohibition and punishment toward an integrated framework incorporating legal regulation, social prevention, health intervention, institutional collaboration, and community participation. The principles of ḥifẓ al-nafs and ḥifẓ al-ʿaql emerge as the primary foundations of alcohol regulation, complemented by ḥifẓ al-nasl and ḥifẓ al-māl in protecting family resilience and socioeconomic welfare. The study proposes a maqāṣid-based alcohol regulation model that repositions Islamic public policy as a welfare-oriented governance framework capable of integrating religious ethics, harm prevention, and sustainable social development.

Abstract

Mosques have traditionally been perceived primarily as places of worship, although their potential as institutions for Islamic social development and community economic empowerment has received increasing scholarly attention. This study examines how mosques function as Islamic social development institutions and how religious resources are transformed into sustainable community economic empowerment in Probolinggo, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative multiple-site case study, the research was conducted from September to November 2025 across six mosques selected through maximum-variation purposive sampling. Data were collected through non-participant observations and semi-structured in-depth interviews involving 30 participants, including mosque administrators, active congregants, and surrounding residents or micro-entrepreneurs. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative approach involving data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, thematic coding, cross-case comparison, and triangulation. The findings reveal four interconnected mechanisms underlying mosque-centered empowerment: religious resource mobilization, institutional conversion mechanisms, economic capability formation, and sustainable community empowerment. Religious legitimacy, congregational trust, charitable resources, volunteerism, and social networks become economically productive when mediated through transparent governance, community-based targeting, productive financing, mentoring, market linkage, and stakeholder collaboration. Based on these findings, the study proposes the Mosque-Centered Islamic Social Development (MCISD) Model as a meso-level institutional framework explaining how mosques convert religious and social capital into sustainable economic capabilities. The model extends Islamic social finance scholarship beyond instrument-centered approaches by emphasizing governance, capability development, and collaborative networks as foundations for long-term community resilience.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Islamic legal legitimacy regarding the commodification of sacrificial animal hides within a rural community setting (Village X), driven by limited local processing capacity and the urgency of utilizing sale proceeds for public benefit (mosque funds). Employing a qualitative-sociological approach with field research methods, primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving the qurbani committee, religious leaders, and local residents. Data were analyzed descriptively-analytically by confronting empirical practices with contemporary fiqh muamalah doctrines and Maqashid Shariah. The findings reveal a normative tension: while the majority of scholars (jumhur ulama) strictly prohibit the sale of any sacrificial animal parts based on textual Hadith prohibitions, local practices redirecting the economic value of hides to mosque infrastructure incorporate istihsan and maslahah mursalah principles to prevent waste (tzayyi’). This study recommends reconceptualizing the role of the qurbani committee not as vendor-owners (ba'i), but as proxy managers (wakalah) who administer property utility for collective welfare transparently.

Abstract

The expansion of mini fuel stations (Pom Mini) has improved access to fuel for communities in rural areas where conventional fuel stations are relatively distant. However, the use of measuring devices that are insufficiently calibrated raises concerns regarding measurement accuracy, transactional transparency, and consumer rights. This study examines the practice of fuel transactions at mini fuel stations in Rantau Karya Village and reconstructs the principle of fair measurement from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh muamalah). Employing a qualitative field research design, data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving mini fuel station operators and consumers. The data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation employed to strengthen the credibility of the findings. The findings indicate that mini fuel stations provide substantial economic and practical benefits by facilitating access to fuel for local communities. Nevertheless, variations in measurement accuracy were identified because some measuring devices had not been subjected to systematic calibration, creating discrepancies between the quantity displayed and the quantity received by consumers. From the perspective of fiqh muamalah, the transaction is generally valid when its essential elements and conditions are fulfilled and the parties enter into the contract voluntarily. Nevertheless, inaccurate measurement conflicts with the principles of ‘adl (justice), amanah (trustworthiness), and transparency in commercial transactions and may constitute tadlis when the discrepancy is knowingly concealed or deliberately manipulated by the seller. The study contributes to the development of Islamic commercial jurisprudence by emphasizing measurement accuracy as an integral dimension of transactional justice. Regular calibration, transparent measurement procedures, and effective consumer protection are therefore necessary to ensure that mini fuel transactions comply with both commercial standards and Sharia principles.

Abstract

Trading practices in agricultural commodities at the farmer level are frequently marred by unethical behavior and information asymmetry, leading to unfair competition. This study aims to analyze the transaction patterns of hybrid coconut trading and its implications for transactional justice from the perspective of Islamic Business Ethics in Nipah Panjang II Village. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach based on field research, primary data were gathered from seven key informants, comprising five hybrid coconut farmers and two middlemen/buyers. The findings reveal that the executed trading practices do not fully align with the fundamental principles of Islamic Business Ethics. Non-compliance is reflected in violations of unity, equability ('adl), responsibility, and truthfulness/honesty. Buyers exhibited unethical behavior through unilateral weight deductions without transparency or proper justification. Conversely, farmers engaged in quality manipulation by applying chemical agents (alum) to artificially alter weight and conceal the true quality of the crop, resulting in mutual disadvantage. Consequently, the transactions merely satisfy the principle of free will based on mutual consent (an-taradin), while abandoning the core elements of justice and transparency in Islamic commercial law.

Abstract

The transformation of halal lifestyle from mere religious compliance into a part of popular culture has created new dynamics in the consumption preferences of young Muslim consumers. This study aims to analyze the meaning, practices, and rationality of halal consumption among students at Institut Islam Al-Mujaddid Sabak from the perspective of Islamic economics. The study employed a descriptive qualitative field research approach involving 10 students from different study programs and academic levels selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, and were analyzed through data condensation, thematic coding, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Data trustworthiness was strengthened through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings show that students’ halal lifestyle has developed into a broader way of life encompassing halal food and cosmetics, the use of Islamic financial services, and ethical conduct in daily life. However, a gap was identified between halal awareness, halal literacy, and consistency of practice, particularly due to limited product accessibility, peer influence, social media trends, and symbolic consumption. From the perspective of Islamic economics, students’ consumption preferences tend to reflect the fulfillment of maslahah through the hierarchy of dharuriyyah, hajiyyah, and tahsiniyyah, while also relating to the protection of hifz al-din, hifz al-nafs, and hifz al-mal. This study proposes a halal consumption rationality model for young Muslims consisting of religious awareness, halal literacy, social and digital influence, maslahah evaluation, consumption decision, and self-control. The model demonstrates that Muslim youth consumption rationality is determined not only by the halal status of products, but also by their ability to assess maslahah and control tendencies toward israf, tabdzir, and halal hedonism.

Abstract

Financial literacy and compliance with transaction record-keeping constitute important foundations for maintaining cash-flow management and the sustainability of micro-enterprises. However, limited financial understanding, the commingling of business and personal funds, and low record-keeping discipline remain persistent challenges in micro-business management. This study aims to analyze financial literacy, compliance with manual record-keeping, and their implications for business sustainability through a case study of Yafatha Shop, a micro-retail enterprise located in Muara Sabak Barat District, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency. The study employed a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, observation of daily transaction activities, and documentation of available cash books, transaction receipts, and financial records. Data were analyzed interactively through data reduction and coding, thematic data display, and conclusion drawing and verification, while data trustworthiness was strengthened through source and method triangulation. The findings indicate that Yafatha Shop still faces limitations in cash separation, consistency of transaction recording, receivables management, and financial planning. Some financial information continues to rely on the owner’s memory, while business and personal funds have not yet been clearly separated. Record-keeping is also constrained by operational time limitations, established business habits, and perceptions regarding the complexity of digital financial technology. Consistent manual record-keeping was identified as being associated with the owner’s ability to monitor cash flow, maintain working capital, control receivables, and support operational decision-making. This study proposes a micro-enterprise financial management transition model consisting of the following stages: basic financial literacy, cash separation, disciplined manual record-keeping, formation of simple financial information, cash-flow control, digitalization readiness, and business sustainability. The model emphasizes that manual record-keeping should not be viewed as technological backwardness, but rather as a foundational stage in building financial accountability and preparing micro-enterprises for financial digitalization.

Abstract

This research involves support from various extreme religious groups, both from the left and right. This phenomenon can be understood as a concept related to radicalism on one side and liberalism on the other. Extremism in this context is not limited to Islam and Islamism, but also encompasses characteristics of Islam as outlined in the Qur'an, referred to as Islam wasathan. The application of a moderate stance is in line with the teachings in Q.S. al-Baqarah verse 143, although it should be noted from the outset that this statement is not entirely accurate. To realize moderation or wasathiyah as a guideline for thinking, behaving, and acting for Muslims, preliminary steps are necessary. This research aims to analyze several issues: (1) What does Q.S. al-Baqarah verse 143 explain about social moderation in religious practice? (2) How can the concept of moderation be applied according to Surat Al-Baqarah:143? This study also investigates whether this support comes from highly esoteric religious groups. Furthermore, the application of moderation principles aligns with the goals of Islamic education, emphasizing the importance of openness; Q.S. al-Baqarah verse 143 asserts that an educator must be able to adopt an open attitude and provide guidance in the process of teaching Islam. The method of Islamic education is based on compassion, prioritizing polite and open attitudes in the learning environment. It is hoped that the results of this research can contribute to the development of knowledge among academics as well as educators and parents in their efforts to moderate students' understanding in daily life.
