Abstract

This research is motivated by the suboptimal use of literary works as a learning medium based on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in fostering environmental awareness. This study aims to identify sustainability values related to the relationship between humans and the environment and their relationship to the principles of sustainable development in Ahmad Tohari's novel. The method used is descriptive qualitative with library research. Data collection was carried out through reading and note-taking techniques. The results show that Ahmad Tohari's novel contains ESD values that represent the relationship between humans, the environment, and social systems. Teak forest management reflects the economic dimension while also demonstrating social inequality in the control of natural resources. Infrastructure development, such as bridges and irrigation channels, demonstrates complex ecological and social impacts in the development process. In addition, local wisdom in managing natural resources illustrates sustainable practices based on traditional knowledge. The environmental narrative in the novel emphasizes the importance of balance between exploitation and conservation of nature. Thus, literary works have the potential as educational media in instilling sustainability values according to ESD principles.

Abstract

Religious institutions are not limited to being a place to internalize religious values, another vital function is to participate in improving the quality of education for the better with or without assistance from the government. One of the religious institutions that has a contribution to improving quality education is the Muhammadiyah religious institution. This study examines Muhammadiyah religious institutions in Pamekasan. The methods used in this study are qualitative by conducting in-depth observations and interviews. This study interviewed the caregivers of orphanages and administrators of the Pamekasan Muhammadiyah Education Institute and analyzed from a sociological perspective. The contribution of Muhammadiyah Education Institutions can be seen in three aspects; first, striving for quality education for the lower middle class, in order to empower the lower middle class to have equal opportunities to access education. This effort supports SDGs point 4. Second, strengthening soft skills with various programs in orphanages and schools. In addition, it provides free housing and food clothing for students living in orphanages who are on average from the lower middle class, supporting SDGs point 1. Third, providing opportunities for social mobility for the lower class by providing soft skills in the form of book reading skills, memorizing the Qur'an above 10 juices, Arabic and English skills so that they can compete for free S2 and S3 scholarships.

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence have completely transformed the landscape of early childhood education; however, research that comprehensively integrates artificial intelligence, cognitive development, communication skills, and the Education for Sustainable Development framework at the early childhood education level remains very limited. These limitations underscore the need for research that examines the direct experiences of teachers and children in artificial intelligence-based learning processes in a thorough and contextual manner. This study aims to identify an artificial intelligence-based learning model that optimizes the cognitive development and communication skills of young children within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development at Al Azhar Kindergarten in Pamekasan. The study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, involving a school principal, three classroom teachers, and twenty students as informants. Data collection techniques included participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a review of instructional documents, conducted from January through March 2026. The research findings revealed four main themes: teachers’ pedagogical adaptation, improvements in children’s logical reasoning, the development of children’s verbal communication skills, and the alignment of the learning model with the principles of inclusivity and future-oriented approaches within the framework of Education for Sustainable Development. This study confirms that artificial intelligence-based learning models are suitable for implementation in early childhood education as a strategic tool for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Abstract

Language is a fundamental component of cultural identity; therefore, language attitude plays a crucial role in the sustainability of a language. From the perspective of sustainable education, the maintenance of the Indonesian language represents an important effort by non-formal educational institutions to provide educational access for migrant workers’ children while also contributing to the development of human resources with strong character and national identity. This study aims to describe language attitudes and the efforts to maintain the Indonesian language among migrant workers’ children at Sanggar Bimbingan Kampung Pandan, Malaysia. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method with a case study design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, recording, note-taking techniques, and interviews. The findings indicate that the majority of children exhibit positive attitudes toward the Indonesian language, as reflected in their sense of pride and loyalty in using it, despite living in a multilingual environment dominated by Malay. Language maintenance efforts are carried out through non-formal education at the learning center by teachers, family involvement, and peer interaction. However, instances of code-mixing were also identified, involving Indonesian, Malay as the children’s first language, and their respective regional languages. These findings highlight that sustainable education plays a significant role in preserving the linguistic and cultural identity of migrant workers’ children as part of sustainable development.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model in enhancing students' ability to analyze figurative language in short stories. Conducted with 29 ninth-grade students at SMP Santa Maria Sidoarjo during the 2025/2026 academic year, the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design included two cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were gathered through written tests, classroom observations, and documentation to assess students' analytical skills and engagement. Results showed significant improvement in analyzing figurative language, with average scores rising from 48.62 in the pre-cycle to 62.28 in Cycle I and 78.40 in Cycle II, surpassing the minimum mastery criterion. Additionally, the learning process fostered greater student participation and critical thinking during literary analysis. These findings indicate that Discovery Learning is an effective approach for developing literary competence and interpretative skills, while also enhancing cultural literacy in alignment with Education for Sustainable Development goals by promoting critical awareness and engagement with literary texts.

Abstract

This study aims to design a strategic information system plan to support digital learning implementation at SMP Islam Darussalam using the Ward and Peppard approach. The current implementation of e-learning at SMP Islam Darussalam is not yet optimal due to the absence of a well-defined strategic plan, resulting in misalignment between systems and user needs. Previous studies on IS/IT strategic planning have mainly focused on universities and business organizations, while limited research discusses its implementation in Islamic junior high schools. This study employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis applies the Ward and Peppard framework, supported by SWOT, Value Chain, PEST, Porter’s Five Forces, and McFarlan Strategic Grid analyses. The results show that the approach effectively identifies organizational needs and formulates IS/IT strategies aligned with institutional goals. The study produces recommendations in the form of an application portfolio and development roadmap focusing on a Learning Management System (LMS), an online examination system, and a student performance analysis system to support sustainable digital learning implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of the Montessori approach into inclusive education practices as a strategy to achieve social sustainability at SIT Al Uswah Pamekasan. Amid increasing issues of intolerance, the marginalization of children with special needs, and a growing empathy crisis in primary education, schools are required to develop a learning ecosystem that is equitable, participatory, and sustainable. The Montessori approach, developed by Maria Montessori, emphasizes child-centered learning, respect for diversity, and the development of independence and social responsibility. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design to explore the practice of integrating Montessori pedagogy within an inclusive setting, including learning strategies, school culture, and the dynamics of students’ social interactions. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the integration of Montessori principles into inclusive education contributes to strengthening social cohesion, enhancing students’ empathy, and fostering a supportive and non-discriminatory learning environment. These findings suggest that the synergy between Montessori pedagogy and inclusive education can serve as a strategic model for fostering social sustainability at the primary education level.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating cultural literacy and digital literacy in Indonesian language learning to strengthen students’ national resilience. A mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed, involving elementary school students as research subjects. Data were collected through tests, observations, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results show that the integration of cultural and digital literacy significantly improves students’ reading comprehension, as indicated by a high N-Gain score (0.71) in the experimental group compared to the control group (0.46). In addition, students’ cultural literacy and digital literacy increased, particularly in understanding cultural values, evaluating information, and using digital media responsibly. Learning engagement also improved, with students demonstrating more active, interactive, and reflective participation. Qualitative findings reveal that students better understand cultural values when learning is connected to real-life contexts, while teachers perceive this approach as more effective and creative. The study concludes that integrating cultural and digital literacy is an effective strategy to support sustainable education and strengthen students’ national resilience.
