Abstract

The in vitro study aimed to evaluate the utilization of maggot flour from selected substrates as a substitute for soybean meal in sheep rations on digestibility and rumen fermentation in vitro. Maggot were reared using three different substrates i.e., sheep feces, household waste and bread waste. The BSF maggot product with feces substrate showed the highest protein was used in this study. The treatments in this study were T1=100% soybean meal, T2=50% soybean meal + 50% maggot flour, T3=100% maggot flour. In vitro rumen fermentation and digestibility were conducted and the parameters were pH, NH3, volatile fatty acid (VFA), dry matter digestibility (DMD) and organic matter digestibility (OMD). Maggot rearing data were presented descriptively while the in vitro data were analyzed using analysis of variance. The result showed that the treatments had no significant effect (P>0.05) on pH, VFA, DMD and OMD, but replacement of soybean meal (100% maggot flour) affected NH3 production. The utilization of maggot as a substitute for soybean meal in sheep ration did not have a negative impact on in vitro fermentability and rumen digestibility.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the relationship models and phenotypic correlation between the egg weight of Alabio duck (Anas Platyrhynchos Borneo) and the Haugh unit (HU), albumen weight, yolk weight, albumen index, and yolk index. Five hundred eggs weighing 65.7 ± 4.62 g were collected from a flock of 32-week-old commercial laying hens as objects for this experiment. The observed variables were egg weight, albumen weight, yolk weight, albumen index, and yolk index. The data was analyzed using simple linear regression and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). A significant correlation (P < 0.05) was found between egg weight and HU, albumen weight, yolk weight, and yolk index., with an r of -0.11, 0.83, 0.70, and 0.19, respectively. However, there was no significant correlation between egg weight and albumen index (P > 0.05). These results indicated that egg weight could be used as a variable to appropriately predict albumen weight and yolk weight with the equations y = -0.11 + 0.56x and y = -2.10 + 0.37x for albumen and yolk weight, respectively. However, egg weight as a single variable could not accurately predict the HU and yolk index of the Alabio duck egg.

Abstract

The sheep population in Bondowoso Regency increases every year, but this number cannot meet the demand for sheep meat. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the internal and external factors affecting sheep farming in Bondowoso Regency, as well as to determine the strategies that should be carried out according to experts and analyzed using the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP). This study used purposive sampling, where the number of respondents was 30 sheep farmers. Furthermore, questionnaires were distributed to 2 experts in the field of animal husbandry. Questionnaires from farmers were processed using SWOT analysis and questionnaires from livestock experts were processed using AHP. The results of the SWOT analysis are that 50% of respondents are in Quadrant 1, 6.67% in Quadrant 2, 16.67% in Quadrant 3, and 26.67% in Quadrant 4. The conclusion of this study was based on SWOT analysis, 50% of sheep farmers in Bondowoso Regency are in a very favorable condition. Based on AHP, the most recommended variable was code V1, "available natural resources, especially forage, and agricultural waste". Furthermore, the most recommended strategy is code S1, "Livestock businesses must be integrated from upstream to downstream industries, such as producing feed, selling using the latest market prices and livestock manure processed into organic fertilizer".

Abstract

The objective of the study was to analyze the use of molasses as an energy source of silage and probiotics on the physical/organoleptic quality of silage, fermentation characteristics, and NDF and ADF silage content. 15 kgs of Napier grass were packed in plastic silos for each treatment and stored for 21 days. The experiment used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment consisted of P0: control or the Napier grass silage, P1: Napier grass silage + 3% molasses, and P2: Napier grass silage + 3% molasses and EM4 probiotics. The data were tested by using an analysis of variance and the differences among treatment means were examined by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The variables measured were organoleptic quality including color, odor, texture, presence of fungi, fermentation characteristics including pH, dry matter (DM), and fleigh value as well as the content of Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF). The results showed that the molasses and probiotics addition had no significant effect on the color, odor, and texture of the silage (P>0.05) but had a significant effect on the presence of fungi (P<0.01). Molasses and probiotics addition as fermentation additives reduced the pH value and increased the value of fleigh silage (P<0.05) but did not affect the increase of silage dry matter (P>0.05), decreased the NDF content (P<0.05) and had no significant effect on the ADF content. The conclusion of the research was the addition of molasses as an energy source, as well as a combination of molasses and EM4 probiotics can improve the fermentative quality of silage, by decreasing the pH value, increasing the fleigh value, and being able to reduce the NDF content of silage.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of supplementation of African leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) extract on quail blood lipid profile (comprising total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol concentrations) and yolk cholesterol. One hundred twenty female quail aged 8 weeks were fed a supplementary Vernonia amygdalina for 6 weeks. The study was of completely randomized design with 3 treatment and 5 replications. The treatment were no supplementation of African leaf extract to the control and supplementation of African leaf extract at doses of 3 and 6 ml quail/day. The observed variables were those of blood lipid profile (comprising total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol concentrations) and egg yolk cholesterol. Blood lipid profiles data were analyzed of variance and yolk cholesterol concentrations were analyzed descriptively with 1 sample (composite from each replication) for each treatment. The study results showed that African leaf extract significantly (P<0.05) reduced quail blood cholesterol and yolk cholesterol. Yolk cholesterol was reduced by 5.01% and 11.38, respectively, at doses of 3 and 6 ml quail/ day as compared to controls. Blood triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol concentrations were not significantly different from those in controls. From these study results it was concluded that supplementation of African leaf at a dose of 6 mL quail/ day was capable of reducing quail blood cholesterol and yolk cholesterol.

Abstract

Co-substrate of papaya seeds (PS) with dairy cow manure (DCM) resulted an increase of organic matter (OM) content and not all OM could be digested properly in the continuous digester. This research was conducted to measure methane production of slurry that study. The experiment used MSP, BP, NaOH, batch type digester with completely randomized design. The treatments were R1 (100% DCM), R2 (95% DCM and 5% PS non germination) and R3 (95% DCM and 5% PS germination) with 5 replications. Data were analysed using analysis of variance. The observed variables were methane production, pH value, dry matter reduction (DMR) and OM reduction (OMR). Methane production showed significantly different (P<0.05), namely: 5.28; 7.19 and 6.26 l/l for R1, R2 and R3. The limited hydraulic retention time of substrate in continuous digester caused not all of the OM in R2 and R3 to be properly digested and is still left in the slurry. The decrease methane production of R3 than R2 was due to better nutrient content of R2 so that it was digested better while in the continuous digester. The higher DMR, OMR and methane production in R2 and R3 than R1 indicate that the use of BP as a co-substrate with DCM can increase the OM content and its quality and some of OM is still left in the slurry.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the integration potential of cassava plants with goats in aerial production and goat manure-derived fertilizers. This research was conducted by purposive sampling with the consideration that Lampung Province is the central region of cassava production in Indonesia and is the region with the highest population of goats outside Java Island. Sampling was carried out in Central Lampung and East Lampung with high-production cassava and goats. Analysis using LQ, FPCI, carrying capacity, and fertilizer production from goat manure. The data obtained was then presented descriptively. The results showed that FPCI was located in Central Lampung, East Lampung, North Lampung, Tulang Bawang, and Tulang Bawang West. The highest aerial carrying capacity of cassava, 31.6%, was concentrated in Central Lampung, thereby affecting the livestock carrying capacity. LQ analysis obtained showed that around 66.7% of the area in Lampung was a goat livestock base. The highest production of fertilizer from goat manure was obtained by South Lampung, which covers around 24.5% of the total area of Lampung. The conclusion from this study was that areas that have potential for development supported by the provision of feed sourced from aerial sources from cassava plant waste if integrating cassava plants and goat livestock were East Lampung, Central Lampung, North Lampung, Tulang Bawang, and Tulang Bawang Barat districts.
