Abstract

This study examines the level of understanding among Generation Z in Banda Aceh regarding Qur’anic verses and hadiths related to zakat mal, utilizing a quantitative approach based on seven cognitive indicators: interpreting, explaining, exemplifying, classifying, summarizing, comparing, and inferring. Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to 105 respondents. The results indicate a moderate level of comprehension, with the following scores: explaining (69.20%), classifying (68.95%), inferring (68.69%), exemplifying (68.25%), comparing (68.06%), summarizing (67.04%), and interpreting (66.98%). Explaining emerged as the strongest indicator, while interpreting was the weakest. Although the respondents demonstrated a fair understanding of Zakat al-Mal, further educational efforts are needed to deepen both their conceptual and contextual understanding of this Islamic obligation. This study provides empirical insights for educational institutions and religious authorities to enhance Zakat al-Mal literacy among Generation Z and serves as a foundation for future research on the socio-economic application of Zakat.

Abstract

This study explores the delivery of Qur’anic spiritual messages by Islamic Education teachers to students from broken home families who are either victims or perpetrators of cyberbullying. The aim is to foster awareness of the importance of ethical interaction on social media and to develop emotional, mental, and spiritual resilience. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved four Islamic Education teachers, two homeroom teachers, and five students from broken home backgrounds. Data were collected through observation and interviews, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that a broken home environment can trigger students to become both victims and perpetrators of cyberbullying. As victims, students are at risk of psychological, emotional, and mental distress. As perpetrators, they may experience moral degradation and diminished humanity. The study concludes that the harmful effects of cyberbullying on students from broken home families can be mitigated through the therapeutic stimulation of Qur’anic spiritual messages, focusing on moral conduct, life principles, repentance, patience, and positive thinking.

Abstract

This article explores the ideological negotiations involved in the establishment process of the Al-Qur’an and Terjemahnyo: Bahaso Melayu Jambi (QTBMJ), a Qur’anic translation project supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. This study investigates how the process of vernacularizing the Qur’an into Jambi Malay reflects the interaction between state ideology, translator agency, and local cultural values. Utilizing Michel Foucault’s framework of power relations combined with a descriptive-analytical method, this study focuses on examining the archival documents, interview reports, and content analysis related to QTBMJ. It was found that the word choice of Qur’anic vocabulary in QTBMJ is not considered a neutral linguistic act but rather a result of negotiation process between religious, political, and social ideologies. Another concern is due to translation choices concerning gender-sensitive terms (e.g., qawwamun, al-nisā’, nafs wahidah) and how these reflect the broader shifts in religious and gender discourse in Indonesia. This article argues that the translation of the Qur’an into a local language is a complex process that involved dynamic interaction between state authority, translator subjectivity, and moral tradition of the local community. This study will contribute to the growing literature on Vernacular Islam, Qur’anic Translation, and The Language of Political Religious in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This study explores the ideological and cultural influences on the interpretation of Qur'anic verses through a comparative analysis of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) translation from Indonesia and the translation by Muhammad Taqi al-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan from Saudi Arabia. Focusing on theological, political, and gender themes, this study examines key verses addressing concepts such as tauhid (the oneness of God), awliyā’ (relations between Muslims and non-Muslims), and gender roles. The Kemenag translation reflects Indonesia's pluralistic and inclusive policies, promoting interfaith harmony, mutual respect, and gender equality. On the other hand, the Hilali-Khan translation adheres to a literal framework influenced by Wahhabi ideology, emphasizing theological exclusivity and traditional gender hierarchies. These differences highlight the impact of socio-political contexts on Qur'anic translation strategies and their implications for societal perceptions and theological discourse. Through a comparative textual and discourse analysis approach, this study demonstrates that inclusive and context-aware translations contribute to promoting justice, tolerance, and social cohesion. The findings underscore the need to balance theological fidelity with socio-political responsiveness to serve diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

Historical evidence shows that Hadith literature in the Nusantara experienced a revival and golden age in the 20th century, marked by the emergence of arba‘īn-style compilations. This article aims to investigate the genealogy of the structure and themes found in these arba‘īn works. Employing historical and content analysis methods, the study follows three key stages: data reduction, display, and interpretation. The analysis was supported by the ATLAS.ti application as an analytical tool. The findings reveal that during the 20th century, three notable arba‘īn-style works emerged: at-Tarmasī’s collection of 22 Tṡulāṡiyyāt al-Bukhārī hadiths; Hāsyim Asy‘arī’s compilation, intended as ethical and devotional guidance for members of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU); and al-Fadānī’s compilation of 40 hadiths sourced from 40 different books and scholars. These works laid the foundational model for arba‘īn-style hadith writing in the Nusantara. The thematic focuses of the texts also vary: at-Tarmasī emphasizes the virtues of religious practices, Hāsyim Asy‘arī highlights the Prophet Muhammad’s moral teachings, and al-Fadānī concentrates on Islamic legal principles governing human relations with God and all living beings.

Abstract

The representation of women in digital spaces has become a critical area of inquiry, as social media now serves not only as a medium for religious dissemination but also as a contested arena for discourse that shapes the social construction of Muslim communities. While previous studies have examined Qur’anic interpretations of women within academic and mainstream media contexts, limited attention has been paid to how these interpretations are constructed and publicly received on digital platforms—particularly Instagram, with its distinctive visual and interactive features. This study aims to analyze how the Instagram account @QuranReview represents Qur’anic interpretations related to women and to identify the patterns of public reception toward such content. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and guided by reception theory, data were collected over a three-month period through the content analysis of 21 women-focused posts and 228 user comments, supplemented by non-participant observation. Thematic analysis using systematic coding procedures revealed a key finding: there has been a shift in interpretive authority from traditional scholars to digital figures who function as religious influencers in online spaces. This shift is accompanied by three dominant patterns of reception: progressive-affirmative, conservative-resistant, and critical-reflective. These findings underscore the urgency of re-evaluating the legitimacy of religious interpretation in the digital age and call for further studies that explore platform diversity and algorithmic influences in shaping public religious discourse.

Abstract

Communication plays a vital role in shaping the ethical and spiritual character of santriwati (female students at Islamic boarding schools). This study explores the internalization of Qur’anic communication principles—qawlan layyīna (gentle speech), qawlan karīmā (noble speech), and qawlan ma’rūfā (appropriate speech)—within the lived experiences of santriwati at Dayah Terpadu Al-Muslimun in Aceh, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in phenomenology, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed thematically using Miles and Huberman’s model. Findings indicate that santriwati’s understanding of qawlan is shaped more by social experience and role modeling than by textual memorization. These principles are practiced adaptively in both hierarchical and peer interactions and contribute to the formation of moral resilience, communicative empathy, and Islamic identity. The study affirms that qawlan functions as a form of living moral grammar—an embodied ethical structure that regulates speech, intention, and social behavior in and beyond the dayah. This research extends the framework of the Living Qur’an from normative interpretation to performative praxis and offers a theoretical and practical foundation for developing Qur’anic-based communication ethics curricula responsive to the challenges of the digital era.

Abstract

This article systematically examines how Qur’anic legal verses (ayat al-aḥkām) have been implemented in Indonesia’s formal legal system between 2010 and 2024. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach guided by the PRISMA 2020 protocol, nine peer-reviewed journal articles were selected from seven academic databases. The findings indicate that the legislative reception of ayat al-aḥkām varies significantly across legal domains. Economic law shows the most structured integration, with verses on zakat, riba, and halal consumption codified through clear statutory instruments and supported by functional institutions. In contrast, criminal law provisions—such as hand-amputation and public lashing—face hermeneutic reinterpretation and procedural constraints, limiting their operational impact. Family law demonstrates interpretive adaptability, where issues like polygamy and inheritance are mediated through maqāṣid-oriented readings and legal safeguards. Rather than static injunctions, these verses exhibit a living character—negotiated, reinterpreted, and embodied within contemporary legal and institutional settings. Across domains, Qur’anic legal norms “live” through contextual engagement with doctrinal consensus, institutional readiness, and political feasibility. These findings reaffirm Indonesia’s dynamic and negotiated approach to Islamic legal integration, suggesting that future Qur’an-based legislation will depend as much on contextual alignment as on textual authority.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of the “Love-based Curriculum” initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia through the perspective of the prophetic hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The research focuses on identifying, classifying, and analyzing hadiths that represent the values of love for God (ḥablum minallāh), love for fellow human beings (ḥablum minannās), love for the environment, and love for the homeland. Employing a qualitative approach through a library-based study, this research applies the method of takhrīj al-ḥadīth, followed by sanad and matan criticism to assess the authenticity of the hadiths utilized. This study is conducted to address the existing gap in the development of Islamic education curricula that explicitly draw upon prophetic traditions as primary sources of educational values. The findings reveal that out of 54 identified hadith, the majority are classified as ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) and are appropriate to serve as normative foundations for formulating a value-based curriculum centered on love. These traditions demonstrate a strong correlation with the values of tolerance, empathy, ecological responsibility, and national spirit. The results underscore the urgency of integrating prophetic teachings into the design of an Islamic education curriculum that is more holistic, transformative, and humanistic. A hadith-based Love Curriculum holds substantial potential in shaping a learning ecosystem that not only fosters intellectual excellence but also cultivates moral integrity, strengthens social harmony, and promotes the development of a robust national character.

Abstract

This article examines the Quranic concept of nusyuz through Ibn Asyur’s al Tahrir wa al Tanwir and develops a maqasid oriented account for addressing marital conflict in contemporary Muslim families. The study adopts a qualitative library based method that closely reads Q 4.34 and Q 4.128 and triangulates classical fiqh writings thematic exegesis and recent scholarship on family law. The analysis shows that nusyuz is a relational breach that may be committed by either spouse and that Ibn Asyur proposes a gradual and ethically constrained sequence that begins with counsel then proceeds to separation of beds and only allows corrective action that must remain symbolic and non violent while prioritizing mediation whenever harm is likely. Reading the two verses together yields a symmetrical framework that protects dignity prevents harm and restores rights by aligning procedural steps with the objectives of justice compassion and public welfare. The article concludes that this maqasid based synthesis offers a text faithful and context sensitive basis for counseling adjudication and policy in Islamic family law and it recommends empirical evaluation in courts counseling services and community mediation to assess feasibility safeguards and effectiveness.
