Abstract

Tourism website plays the important role to shape cultural perceptions and promoting destinations, to make language use a significant factor in influencing potential visitors. Despite extensive theoretical discussions on grammar's role in discourse. It remains a gap between linguistic theories and their practical application in the tourism industry, particularly in how grammar contributes to cultural representation. This gap matters because in tourism promotion, nuanced grammatical choices can change influence visitors' emotional connection, trust, and desire to experience a culture, ultimately affecting destination appeal and competitiveness. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the grammatical strategies used by Indonesian travel websites to construct narratives about Bali's cultural identity. To combine the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and cultural semiotics as the analytical framework, the research focused on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of language to uncover how deeper cultural meanings are encoded. The data collected from popular Indonesian travel websites, targeting content on cultural landmarks, traditional performances, and local customs in Bali. Textual excerpts were manually extracted and systematically organized for analysis. The findings showed that the websites mainly use descriptive language, personal pronouns, commands, and connecting words to portray Bali as a genuine, spiritual, and unique place to visit. Additionally, culturally specific terms and sensory descriptions enrich the promotional narratives, enhancing reader engagement and positioning Bali as a culturally immersive experience. The research concluded that grammatical choices were instrumental not only in communication but also to shape cultural tourism narratives. By doing these strategies, the study contributes to both linguistic and tourism discourse, offering practical insights into the effective use of grammar for cultural representation and promotional purposes.

Abstract

This study explored how figurative language was used to convey emotions of love and heartbreak in the song lyrics of IGOR, an album by Tyler, the Creator. As a contemporary artist known for emotional depth and creative expression, Tyler’s work provided rich material for literary analysis. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, applying Kennedy and Gioia’s (1995) theory to identify figurative language and Leech’s (1981) framework to analyze types of meaning. Data were collected through documentation of official song lyrics and textual analysis, which involved close reading, identification of figurative expressions, and interpretation of their underlying meanings. The findings showed that Tyler frequently employed metaphors, personification, and hyperbole, which intensified the portrayal of emotional struggles and deepened the listener’s engagement with the themes of longing, love, and heartbreak. The analysis also revealed the presence of connotative, affective, and reflected meanings that enriched the emotional resonance of the songs. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the literary value of song lyrics and affirmed the relevance of applying literary theories to music as a form of modern literature.

Abstract

In the digital age, social media has profoundly influenced communication styles, raising concerns about its impact on formal writing skills. Understanding this influence is crucial, as informal writing habits may affect academic writing quality among non-native English learners. Although social media’s role in shaping language use has been widely recognized, there remains a noticeable gap in the literature between theoretical understanding and practical evidence of how these informal styles translate into academic writing practices. To address this gap, the present study examines how social media writing styles influence paragraph composition skills among non-native English learners. The primary aim is to explore how informal language use on social media platforms affects grammar, sentence structure, and coherence in academic paragraphs. To achieve this, a qualitative approach was employed, involving 15 randomly selected students from Akademi Komunitas MAPINDO. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, analysis of social media content, and a review of academic writing samples. The instruments included structured interview questions and a coding scheme for analyzing both social media content and writing samples. The procedures involved identifying patterns and discrepancies between informal social media writing and formal academic writing. Findings indicate that students frequently transfer informal writing practices from social media into their academic work, including slang, abbreviations, and non-standard grammar. These practices often disrupt the clarity and coherence of their paragraphs. Nevertheless, students demonstrated awareness of the influence of social media on their writing. The study concludes that incorporating social media literacy into the curriculum and developing strategies to address informal writing practices can enhance students’ paragraph composition skills. This approach will help bridge the gap between informal and formal writing styles, thereby improving academic writing quality among non-native English learners.

Abstract

In the digital era, applications have become essential tools for daily activities, particularly in Indonesia. As local apps like Gojek expand into international markets, translation is not only a matter of transferring language but also of ensuring that messages are effectively communicated to target users. This study analyzed the application of Newmark’s communicative translation principles in the English version of the Gojek app. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research examined data from Gojek version 5.18.0, collected through screenshots of the Indonesian and English user interfaces. The analysis focused on three principles: naturalness, equivalent effect, and information accuracy. Findings from seven data samples indicated that these principles were consistently applied. Naturalness was reflected in language that read smoothly and was easily understood. The equivalent effect was maintained through the preservation of vocative and informative functions. Information accuracy, particularly in technical terminology, enhanced user comprehension. Overall, applying communicative translation principles improves user experience and supports global market accessibility while offering guidance for translators and UX writers.

Abstract

Deixis plays a crucial role in pragmatics by helping listeners interpret meaning through contextual cues within an utterance. Despite its importance in effective communication, many language users still struggle to identify and explain deictic expressions accurately. This study addresses that gap by categorizing deixis types and analyzing their referential functions in the movie script Your Place or Mine. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research employed the film transcript as its primary data. The process involved obtaining the script, repeatedly watching the movie, identifying deictic expressions, and marking them for analysis. The study applies Levinson’s (1983) framework—covering personal, spatial, temporal, social, and discourse deixis—alongside Birner’s (2013) reference theory on anaphora and cataphora. The findings show that all five deixis types appear in the script, with personal deixis occurring most frequently. Overall, the results highlight how deixis enhances communicative clarity and demonstrate the value of reference theory in interpreting deictic expressions in film dialogue.

Abstract

Language plays a vital role in daily interaction, enabling people to convey meaning, build relationships, and coordinate social actions. In spoken discourse, adjacency pairs function as key structural units that organize conversation and guide turn-taking. Although conversational analysis has been widely explored in linguistic theory, its application to authentic or scripted dialogue—particularly in popular media—remains limited. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how adjacency pairs operate in exchanges between Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in the TV series Breaking Bad. The research identifies the types of adjacency pairs used and examines how the characters respond to each other’s utterances. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes transcriptions from the third season and categorizes data based on established adjacency pair types. The findings show that all types appear, with question–answer and request–accept/refuse pairs occurring most frequently. Overall, the study demonstrates how fictional dialogue mirrors real conversational patterns and reveals character dynamics.

Abstract

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that examines how meaning is shaped through language use within specific contexts involving speakers and listeners. Central to this field is speech act theory, which explains how utterances perform actions and create social meaning. This study analyzes the types and functions of illocutionary acts used in an interview between Jimmy Fallon and former U.S. President Barack Obama, illustrating how pragmatic strategies operate in media interaction. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis is based on Searle’s (1976) classification of illocutionary acts. Data were gathered through documentation and note-taking. The findings reveal three dominant illocutionary acts: representatives, directives, and expressives. Representatives convey beliefs or statements of fact, directives seek to influence the listener through questions or suggestions, and expressives communicate emotions or evaluations. Overall, the study shows how these illocutionary acts contribute to communicative intent, reflect interpersonal dynamics, and highlight the interactional styles of both interviewer and interviewee.
