Fokus publishes original research or theoretical papers about teaching and learning in Guidance and Counseling study program of IKIP Siliwangi Bandung on current science issues, namely: Guidance and Counseling educator in elementary, secondary and high school level. Guidance and Counseling observers and researchers. Educational decisions maker on regional and national level. We recommend classroom action research, qualitative, descriptive, or quantitative. We may process manuscript of didactic development research (DDR) or research and development (RnD). Our publication could be research on teaching method, an experiment of teaching aid or media, and even effectiveness of lesson study. We accepted any manuscript derived from research of Guidance and Counseling in Indonesia. We will not process manuscript from research approach of school management.

Abstract

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have challenges in controlling emotions and behavior, which impacts their ability to obey rules and develop disciplined character. This study aims to analyze emotional management strategies in children with ADHD and how this management contributes to fostering disciplined character in the school environment. The method used is a study casus qualitative approach with observation, interview, and documentation techniques for teachers, parents, and students with ADHD. The results of the study indicate that an individual approach, consistency in implementing rules, emotional regulation training, and cooperation between teachers and parents play a major role in shaping children's discipline. Effective emotional management not only reduces impulsive behavior but also helps students understand the consequences of their actions. In conclusion, proper emotional management is an important foundation in developing disciplined character in children with ADHD, and requires ongoing support from various parties.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of digital well-being among high school students at the Indonesian School in Jeddah. The study is driven by the high duration of digital device usage among students, influenced by geographical, socioeconomic factors, and lack of parental supervision. A descriptive quantitative approach was used with 54 respondents from grades X and XI. The instrument employed was a digital well-being questionnaire, validated and tested for reliability, covering five core dimensions. Results showed that 43% of students had high digital well-being, 34% moderate, and 23% low. The social interaction aspect scored the highest, while digital safety and self-control require more attention. This study highlights the need for counseling services and digital literacy education in schools to promote healthy and balanced digital habits. The findings can serve as a foundation for policy formulation and school-based interventions to foster a positive digital culture among students.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Art therapy in expressing career interests among marginalized children aged 7–12 years within the context of group counseling services. Using a qualitative intrinsic case study approach, the research focuses on understanding the subjective experiences of children from underprivileged backgrounds in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data collection involved participatory observation, documentation of children’s drawings, and spontaneous verbal expressions during art activities. The findings reveal that through art therapy, children were able to symbolize their future aspirations, such as becoming doctors, soldiers, soccer players, singers, and entrepreneurs, despite facing socioeconomic challenges. Art therapy not only facilitated the expression of career dreams but also enhanced self-concept, motivation, and self-confidence. The study highlights the effectiveness of group Art therapy as a psycho-pedagogical intervention in non-formal education, providing marginalized children with a safe and empowering medium for self-exploration and future orientation. Consequently, Art therapy is recommended as an inclusive, accessible strategy for fostering the personal and educational development of vulnerable youth.

Abstract

Children with Special Needs often face challenges in social interaction, emotional adjustment, and environmental acceptance. Psychosocial support is a crucial factor in helping them achieve optimal development. This study aims to explore the psychosocial support provided through community guidance and counseling services in Sebaya Sidoarjo. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study, involving in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that these services provide emotional support, social skills development, and collaboration with parents. However, challenges such as social stigma and resource limitations still exist. This research emphasizes the importance of collaboration among teachers, parents, and the community to create an environment that supports the development of Children with Special Needs. The findings provide insights for the development of policies and best practices in guidance and counseling services for Children with Special Needs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between peer support and self-compassion on self-esteem possessed by junior high school students. This article aims to explore the important role of self-esteem in the development of early adolescence (junior high school). The peer support scale is (Solomon, 29 items), self-compassion scale (Neff & Germer, 37 items), and self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, 29 items). This study uses a quantitative correlational approach with data collection techniques using interviews, questionnaires and psychological scales in the form of a Likert scale. The population is 676 and the number of samples is 251 junior high school students in Plered District, Cirebon using random sampling and using the slovin technique. The results of the validity and reliability tests on the peer support instrument (0.925), self-compassion (0.958), and self-esteem (0.938) are declared valid and reliable. Data analysis used in this study was by using multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that peer support, self-compassion and self-esteem in students at SMPN Se-Kecamatan Plered Cirebon were in the High category. There was a relationship of 43.2% between peer support and self-compassion on students' self-esteem. The remaining percentage was influenced by other variables not examined in this study. The researcher recommends that guidance and counseling (BK) teachers be able to design individual and group counseling service programs, classical services. Meanwhile, for further researchers, it is recommended to expand the scope of research subjects, and add other variables that may affect self-esteem.

Abstract

Verbal bullying behavior in junior high school students is a serious problem because it has a negative impact on the mental health and social development of the victim. Behavior such as teasing, insulting, threatening and degrading verbally is often done by students who have power over weak students. The study aims to test the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral counseling through psychodrama techniques in reducing verbal bullying behavior in junior high school students. The method used is quantitative pre-experimental design type one group pretest-posttest. The research sample was taken using purposive sampling technique as many as 5 students of class VIII.4 SMPN 7 Palembang with a high verbal bullying behavior category. Data were collected using questionnaires and documentation and analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. The results showed a significant decrease before and after being given treatment from a pretest score of 519 and an average of 103,8 (high category) to a posttest of 186 with an average of 37,2 (low category). Statistical test shows Z count -2,023 with Asymp. Sig value 0,043<0,05 proves that cognitive behavior counseling through psychodrama techniques is effective in reducing verbal bullying behavior of junior high school students. These results can be an intervention strategy in the school environment to create a comfortable and conducive learning atmosphere.

Abstract

The Structure-Adaptive Intensive and Progressive Counseling Model (KIPAS) is an innovation in the field of guidance and counseling developed by Prof. Dr. Andi Mappiare  by combining modern approaches and local wisdom of the archipelago. The model is built on five main pillars: solution-based counseling, intensive approach, progressive, culturally adaptive, and sensitivity to social structures. KIPAS uses techniques such as supportive words, constructive interpretation, reflection, direction, and problem core summarization, which are designed in accordance with Indonesian cultural values. Its implementation involves five structured steps: Good News, Data Integration, Action Planning, Actualization, and Celebration. Research shows the effectiveness of KIPAS in a variety of contexts, including education (increasing learning motivation and entrepreneurial interest) and community empowerment, with a holistic and sustainable approach. Key challenges include limited trained personnel and cultural resistance, but potential improvements, including the integration of digital technology, make the tool relevant for counseling in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of role playing techniques in improving assertive behavior among students who are victims of bullying at SMP Negeri 4 Palopo. This research uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest-posttest type. The subjects of the study were 10 students who were identified as bullying victims, selected using purposive sampling based on interviews and observations conducted with the school counselor (BK teacher). The main instrument used in this study was a Likert-scale questionnaire on assertive behavior, supported by observation sheets and interview guidelines as complementary data. Prior to its use, the questionnaire was tested for validity and reliability. The validity test was conducted using Pearson correlation on 30 trial students, resulting in 41 valid items with r-count values greater than the r-table (0.361). The reliability test showed a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.874, indicating high internal consistency. Data analysis techniques included descriptive analysis, Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and hypothesis testing using the paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant increase in posttest scores compared to pretest scores, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the role playing technique is effective in enhancing assertive behavior in students who are victims of bullying. The implication of this study suggests that school counselors should consider applying this technique as an intervention strategy to build students’ confidence and assertive communication skills in school settings

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in the level of self-awareness of cultural bullying between high school and MA students based on school type and gender. The research approach used was comparative quantitative, with a sample size of 340 students selected through simple random sampling technique from a population of 2,989 students. The sample consisted of 127 students of SMA Negeri 1 Belitang, 85 students of SMA Negeri 1 Buay Madang, and 128 students of MAN 1 OKU Timur. The categorization results showed that 125 students (37%) were in the medium category, 85 students (25%) in the low category, 83 students (24%) in the high category, 24 students (7%) very high, and 23 students (7%) very low. The results of ANOVA and Independent Samples t-test showed that there was no significant difference between SMA and MA students (p = 0.276 > 0.05), nor by gender (p = 0.784 > 0.05). Thus, school type and gender do not have a significant influence on the level of self-awareness in dealing with cultural bullying.

Abstract

Self-efficacy is an individual's belief in their ability to face challenges and complete certain tasks. Based on the results of the pre-study, it shows low student self-efficacy, which is in accordance with the results of AKPD, observations, and interviews with BK teachers. This study aims to prove solution-focused career counseling services as an intervention in improving the self-efficacy of Samarinda high school students. This study uses an experimental research method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design and a quantitative approach. The determination of the subjects of this study used non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling technique of 9 students. The solution-focused career counseling service intervention was carried out in 7 meetings. The results of this study showed an increase in student self-efficacy, namely an average pre-test score of 74.8 and an average post-test score of 104.5. The results of data analysis showed that the sig. value in the pre-test was 0.054> 0.05 and the post-test was 0.761> 0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that the data is normally distributed. The results of the paired sample t test obtained a significance value (2-tailed) = 0.001 < 0.005. So it can be concluded that solution-focused career counseling can be applied to improve the self-efficacy of high school students in Samarinda.
