Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of environment-based science learning in increasing the participation of fourth-grade students at MIN 16 Magetan. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation involving teachers and fourth-grade students as research subjects. The results of the study indicate that environment-based science learning has begun to be implemented by linking learning materials to everyday life and the students' surroundings. Teachers use storytelling methods, group discussions, and presentations to increase student involvement in the learning process. Group discussion activities encourage students to exchange opinions, ask questions, and work together in completing worksheets related to cultural diversity material. Presentation activities also help students become more confident in presenting discussion results in front of the class. However, student participation is still uneven because some students tend to be passive and depend on their group mates. Overall, environment-based science learning can make learning more meaningful, interesting, and interactive and can increase student participation in the learning process.

Abstract

Mathematical representation ability is an essential skill that students need to develop in mathematics learning, as it helps them understand, communicate, and solve mathematical problems through various forms of representation. However, students’ mathematical representation ability at the elementary school level still requires further investigation, particularly in learning integers. This study aimed to analyze the mathematical representation abilities of second-grade elementary school students in learning integers through a case study approach. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design using a case study method. The participants consisted of five second-grade elementary school students selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected through written tests, task- based in-depth interviews, documentation, and field notes. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students’ mathematical representation abilities varied across indicators. Visual representation was the most dominant indicator, as students were able to use pictures and object grouping to understand multiplication as repeated addition. In symbolic representation, most students were able to translate problems into appropriate mathematical operations, although some still relied on repeated addition before expressing multiplication symbols. Meanwhile, verbal representation required further improvement because not all students were able to explain their problem-solving processes and mathematical reasoning comprehensively. Therefore, the mathematical representation abilities of second-grade elementary school students were generally well developed, particularly in visual and symbolic representations, although verbal representation still needs further enhancement.

Abstract

The low mathematics learning outcomes of third-grade elementary school students, particularly on the topic of poles, are influenced by several factors, such as lack of learning motivation, diverse thinking skills, and uninteresting teacher learning methods. This study aims to improve third-grade elementary school students' mathematics learning outcomes on the topic of poles through the application of differentiated learning. This study is a classroom action research (CAR) model that adopts the Kemmis and McTaggart cycle model. The study was conducted in two cycles, each encompassing planning, action implementation, observation/testing, and reflection. The subjects were 28 third-grade elementary school students, consisting of 15 boys and 13 girls. Data analysis was carried out in an integrated manner by calculating the class average (mean) and the percentage of student learning completion. The results showed a significant increase in students' mathematics learning outcomes after the implementation of the differentiated learning approach. In the pre-cycle conditions, the class average score was only 68, with a completion percentage of 28%. Following the interventions in Cycle I, the class average score increased to 71.79, with a 60% completion rate. Improvements in Cycle II, using concrete media, structured exercises, and intensive mentoring, significantly increased the class average score to 98.7, with a 100% classical learning completion rate. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the effective implementation of differentiated learning can improve mathematics learning outcomes for third-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

The ability to understand cause-and-effect relationships is an important aspect of early childhood cognitive development. However, in reality, children's ability to understand simple cause-and-effect relationships has not yet developed optimally. Children still experience difficulties in explaining the causes of events, answering simple questions, and connecting actions with the consequences resulting from an activity. In addition, learning activities are still predominantly conducted through teacher explanations and do not sufficiently involve children in direct experiences through simple experiments. This study aimed to determine the effect of the volcano eruption experiment activity on the ability to understand cause-and-effect relationships among children aged 4–5 years in Group A of RA-Ahnan Bandung. This study employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental Design method. The research design was a One-Group Pre-test Post-test Design. The participants consisted of 7 children aged 4–5 years. Data were collected through observation, documentation, pre-tests, and post-tests. The collected data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test. The results showed an improvement in children's ability to understand cause-and-effect relationships after receiving the treatment in the form of a volcano eruption experiment activity. This improvement was indicated by an increase in the mean score from 10.43 in the pre-test to 13.72 in the post-test. Furthermore, the Paired Sample T-Test results revealed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that the volcano eruption experiment activity had a significant effect on improving the ability to understand cause-and-effect relationships among children aged 4–5 years in Group A of RA-Ahnan Bandung.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' responses to the implementation of the discussion method in supporting the speaking skills of third-grade students at SDN 06 Kubang Tangah. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach. Data were collected from student questionnaires using a four-point Likert scale consisting of strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree options. Based on the available field documents, six complete and clearly readable questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively. One questionnaire was excluded from the analysis because several responses appeared unclear or contained multiple markings in the scanned document. The data were analyzed using total scores, mean scores, percentages, and response categories. The findings revealed that the students’ average score was 40.50 out of a maximum score of 60, equivalent to 67.50%, which was categorized as positive. The highest indicator was students’ confidence in expressing opinions, with a percentage of 72.22%. Meanwhile, the lowest indicator was clarity in expressing opinions, with a percentage of 58.33%. These findings indicate that the discussion method supports students’ confidence, fluency, questioning skills, and ability to respond to others’ opinions. However, teachers still need to strengthen students’ practice in expressing ideas clearly and systematically. This study does not conclude a causal improvement because the available data did not include pretests, posttests, or classroom action research cycles.
