Abstract

This study investigates the instructional strategies employed by Arabic language educators in teaching reading skills (mahārah al-qirā’ah) to students at Ma'had IAIN Kerinci, who possess diverse educational backgrounds. Specifically, it explores how teachers adapt their pedagogy to students' prior Arabic grammar knowledge, particularly among those with pesantren (Islamic boarding school) experience. Grounded in constructivist learning Theory, this qualitative research adopts a phenomenological approach involving classroom observations and in-depth interviews with six instructors and twelve students over four months. Data were thematically analyzed to capture recurring pedagogical patterns and learner experiences. The findings reveal that the constructivist approach is more effective in advanced-level classes, as students with prior grammatical knowledge actively engage in meaning construction. A key strategy identified is the use of i'rāb (grammatical analysis), which enhances students' ability to decode and comprehend Arabic texts. The study underscores the pedagogical value of i'rāb within a constructivist framework and highlights the necessity of aligning instructional strategies with students' linguistic backgrounds. These insights contribute to the development of context-sensitive Arabic reading instruction in heterogeneous academic settings

Abstract

Arabic language immersion has been widely recognized as an effective approach to second language acquisition; however, its implementation in Islamic higher education remains underexplored, particularly within culturally specific contexts like Indonesia. This study aims to explore and conceptualize a contextually grounded model of Arabic language immersion in Indonesian Islamic universities through a phenomenological lens. Research was conducted at three prominent institutions with established Arabic programs: UIN Sunan Kalijaga, University of Darussalam Gontor, and Ar-Raayah College of Arabic Language in Sukabumi. A total of 18 participants—including instructors, curriculum developers, and students—were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis to uncover patterns from participants' lived experiences. The findings reveal that effective immersion is structured around four interrelated components: (1) an integrated and spiral curriculum, (2) intensive Arabic-only environments, (3) religious-cultural contextualization through Islamic practices, and (4) sustained institutional support. These elements form a holistic immersion framework that aligns linguistic competence with Islamic educational values. The study contributes to the theoretical discourse on language immersion by offering a culturally embedded model. It provides practical guidance for Islamic institutions aiming to enhance Arabic programs through authentic, pedagogically coherent strategies.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of Bengkulu local language interference on the speaking skills of students learning Arabic at MAN Islam Cendekia Bengkulu. While language interference in second language acquisition is well-documented, there is limited research on the influence of regional languages, such as Bengkulu, in the Southeast Asian educational context. Using a qualitative approach, this study involved interviews and classroom observations of 30 students to identify patterns of Interference in Arabic pronunciation, sentence structure, and vocabulary. The findings revealed significant phonetic similarities between Bengkulu and Arabic, with local language phonetics contributing to noticeable speech errors, particularly in consonant articulation and sentence construction. These errors were linked to specific characteristics of the Bengkulu language, which affect the student's ability to produce Arabic sounds and structures accurately. The study emphasizes the need for targeted strategies to address language interference in Arabic language teaching. It recommends adjustments in curriculum design and teaching methods to help mitigate the impact of local language interference, ultimately improving students' Arabic proficiency. The implications of this research extend to teacher training and materials development, urging educators to incorporate contrastive linguistic analysis and oral drills that directly target problematic phonetic and syntactic areas. Future studies are encouraged to examine interference effects across other local Indonesian languages and explore longitudinal changes in student performance following targeted instructional interventions.

Abstract

This study examines the morphological and syntactic properties of adjectives in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), addressing a gap in systematic analyses of their functional distribution and contrasts with nouns. The primary objectives are to (1) classify the syntactic roles of adjectives (attributive, subject, predicate, object, adverbial), (2) analyze their morphosyntactic features in each role, and (3) identify how their behavior diverges from nouns, particularly in agreement and definiteness. Employing distributional analysis and immediate constituent analysis (a method for parsing hierarchical sentence structure), we demonstrate that Arabic adjectives exhibit distinct patterns across these functions.  Attributive adjectives fully agree with head nouns in gender, number, case, and definiteness. Adjectives functioning as subjects show syntactic flexibility: definite forms can independently serve as subjects, while indefinite forms require referential contexts. Predicative adjectives are invariably indefinite and shift from nominative to accusative under copular verbs (e.g., kāna). Object adjectives display definiteness and accusative/genitive case marking. Adverbial adjectives, by contrast, are obligatorily indefinite and marked with the accusative case, reflecting their role in modifying events rather than entities. Key findings reveal two contrasts with nouns: (1) adjectives enforce stricter agreement rules, and (2) their definiteness alternations (definite for objects vs. indefinite for predicates and adverbials) correlate predictably with syntactic function. The study contributes to Arabic linguistics by systematizing adjective syntax and to broader typology by illustrating how Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) encodes non-referentiality morphologically. These insights are relevant for theoretical linguistics, Arabic pedagogy, and comparative Semitic studies.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Blooket, a gamified learning platform, in enhancing students’ mastery of Arabic syntax (tarkīb) at Darussalam Islamic Junior High School, Wanaraja, Garut. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental Non-Equivalent Pre-test and Post-test Control Group Design, the research involved two groups: an experimental class (n = 30) using Blooket and a control class (n = 28) receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests focusing on sentence construction, syntactic recognition, and transformations of jumlah ismiyyah and jumlah fi'liyyah. The data were analyzed using t-tests after confirming normality and homogeneity through Shapiro-Wilk and Levene’s tests. Results indicate a significant improvement in the experimental group’s mean score from 37.67 to 72.40, while the control group’s score increased marginally from 40.00 to 43.39. The independent t-test showed a statistically significant difference in post-test scores (p < 0.05) favoring the experimental group. The experimental group’s normalized gain (N-gain) averaged 0.54 (moderate), compared to 0.02 (low) in the control group. These findings suggest that Blooket can effectively increase student engagement and syntactic understanding in Arabic grammar. However, the low-to-moderate N-gain also highlights the need for prolonged intervention or blended strategies for deeper conceptual mastery. Future research is recommended to investigate the long-term effects of Blooket on various aspects of Arabic language proficiency, including speaking and writing skills. Studies should also examine the integration of Blooket with other pedagogical models to enhance critical thinking, collaboration, and deeper syntactic competence across diverse student populations.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the brainstorming technique in enhancing Arabic speaking skills among eleventh-grade students at Al-Rasyidiyah Islamic High School, Bandung. Speaking is a crucial component of language learning, yet students often struggle due to traditional, non-interactive teaching methods. Adopting a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two groups: an experimental group taught using the brainstorming technique and a control group taught through conventional methods. Data were collected using pre-tests, post-tests, and observations, then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that the students’ pre-test average score was 49.06 (low category), while their post-test score increased to 76.88 (sufficient category), indicating significant improvement. The t-test analysis showed a calculated t-value of 14.4, which exceeds the critical t-table value of 1.55 at a 0.05 significance level, confirming the statistical significance of the results. Furthermore, the normalized gain (N-Gain) was 0.57 (57%), categorized as a moderate to high improvement. These findings demonstrate that the brainstorming technique effectively enhances students’ Arabic speaking skills by fostering creativity and active participation. The study recommends integrating brainstorming into Arabic language instruction to promote more dynamic, communicative, and student-centered learning experiences
