Abstract

Hypertension is a major global health issue that significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality. This study examines the relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards preventing hypertension recurrence among hypertensive patients in Indonesia. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 49 hypertensive patients through questionnaires assessing knowledge and attitudes. The results reveal a significant correlation between good knowledge and positive attitudes, with 65% of those with good knowledge exhibiting a positive attitude compared to 35% among those with poor knowledge. The odds ratio (OR=1.643, p=0.000) indicates that patients with better knowledge are significantly more likely to have a positive attitude towards hypertension prevention. These findings underscore the importance of educational interventions in improving health outcomes. Tailored educational programs that address psychological and nutritional aspects, as well as social support mechanisms, are recommended to enhance patient knowledge and foster positive health behaviors. This study highlights the need for continuous patient education and support to reduce the recurrence of hypertension. Public health strategies should focus on integrating comprehensive educational approaches to empower patients and improve adherence to hypertension management practices. The significant role of education in shaping health attitudes and behaviors emphasizes its critical place in public health initiatives aimed at combating hypertension.

Abstract

Hypertension is number one worldwide disease which lead to death. Initially hypertension is caused by changes in the walls of blood vessels. These vascular changes are due to the accumulation of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). ROS is the result of the balance between antioxidants and oxidants, but uncontrolled conditions will cause vascular damage. One of ROS product from metabolism which could played role in downregulation antioxidant gene expression is hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide could be neutralized by catalase enzyme. Studies about catalase expression in hypertension subject is still limited. This research aims to determine mRNA relative expression catalase in hypertension. In this case control study, thrity subject hypertension and normotension subject were recruited within the age of 50-60 years. Hypertension subject was chosen according to JNC 8. Two millilitres vein blood was isolated into RNA. mRNA expression was detected by qRT PCR with 2 steps. Relative expression was determined using livak method. The data was analyzed using Mann Withney test with GraphPad software. Research results show that (1) catalase mRNA relative expression was 0,6 fold in hypertension; (2) catalase relative expression was not significantly lower in hypertension; (3) other antioxidants might have other mechanism to detoxify ROS and prevent hypertension.

Abstract

Makassar City, located on the southwest coast of Sulawesi Island, exhibits dominant land and sea breeze circulation, with sea breezes being stronger during the day and land breezes at night. The use of weather radar is effective in identifying these wind characteristics, which are crucial for fishing activities and renewable energy. This study investigates the characteristics of land and sea breezes and their relation to wave heights in the Spermonde Waters of Makassar during the east and west seasons, providing important information for maritime activities in Makassar City. The research area is located between 4°59’20”S 119°27’46”E and 5°11’26”S 119°22’54”E. This study uses weather observation data, including weather radar data, weather observations, and wave heights from January 2020 to December 2020, divided into three seasonal periods (rainy season, transition period, and dry season). The weather observation data were obtained from Hasanuddin Makassar Meteorological Station and Paotere Makassar Maritime Meteorological Station. Additionally, questionnaires were distributed to fishermen at three locations: PPI Paotere Makassar, PPI Untia Makassar, and Kuri Caddi-Maros Beach Fishermen Village, with 15 respondents at each location. The study shows that land breezes in Makassar are dominant from 18:05 to 19:00 LT with a duration of 9.1 to 11 hours, while sea breezes dominate from 08:00 to 09:00 LT with a duration of 5.1 to 7 hours. This phenomenon is most frequently detected during the dry season (JJA). Land and sea breezes can intrude up to 20.1 to 30 km from the coastline. There is a highly significant positive correlation between wind and wave height in January and August, indicating a strong influence of winds on waves in the Spermonde Waters of Makassar. About 80% of fishermen utilize these wind conditions for fishing activities. Overall, the land and sea breeze patterns significantly impact wave heights and the activities of fishermen in the coastal areas of Makassar.
