Abstract

Background: English for Specific Purpose (ESP) plays a significant role in developing the student's English language skills in writing, reading, speaking, and listening. In Indonesia, English has been learned since the students were in early education to a higher level, however, they are found less confident in using English for communicating especially in ESP classMethods: This research is conducted to find a suitable method to increase the student's self-confidence and enhance their language skills through the appropriate approach called Project Based Learning (PBL). This PBL focuses on the student's oral performance during the Final Test project, which employs technology to reach its purpose and it is conducted online during the pandemic. This study used Kurt Lewin's Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research methodology consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 30 Civil Engineering students in semester 2 of the 2020/2021 academic year. Classroom observation, interview, and teacher evaluation using the National Council Teacher of English (NCTE) Oral presentation rubric are used as the data collectionResults:  The finding shows that students' confidence increased therefore it enhanced their language skills ability through this PBL activity along with the teacher's support and motivation during the whole semester. Conclusion:  Project Based-Learning significantly affects the student's language development, including building their confidence and improving their motivation in using English contextually and creatively without fear of making mistakes. Moreover, Project Based-Learning helps the students feel relaxed and comfortable in ESP class, yet they found it challenging simultaneously.

Abstract

Background: A learning module, which is one of the learning facilities contains material, methods, and limitations. At Universitas Negeri Makassar, especially in the Department of Civil Engineering and Planning Education, there are only limited courses that provide learning modules. This study aims to develop a learning module for Road Material Testing course in the Department of Civil Engineering and Planning Education, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Modules are beneficial because the self-instruction learning system in the module allows students to study independently so that learning resources do not always have to come from lecturers. Methods: This study employed the model by Puslitjaknov (2013) which is the simplified RnD design by Borg and Gall. The stages of research include the development of learning modules, analysis of data validation results, and revision of the developed products. The research instrument used was questionnaires which were given to media and material experts to assess the validity. The other instrument was used for testing students who had previously learned about Road Material Testing. Results: Based on the validation done by material and media experts, the developed module is in the Very Valid category. The results of large-scale field trials of the module with students of the Building Engineering Education study program at Universitas Negeri Makassar show that it is Very Valid (89.65%).Conclusion: The Road Material Testing learning module was developed in accordance with the Semester Lesson Plan of Road Material Testing course with four Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK), nine sub-Course Learning Outcomes of final competencies, and four learning activities.  The module was developed based on the results of the validation from material and media experts. Then, based on small and large-scale trials, the module is considered easy to understand.

Abstract

Background: the modern era is characterized by the acceleration of infrastructure development and the increasing need for efficient transportation. Civil engineering human resource planning plays an important role in ensuring the availability of a workforce that has the required skills and knowledge. This article aims to explore the relationship between these three elements and how their application can contribute to achieving more efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable traffic projects. Methods: The method used in this research uses qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method only prioritizes literature studies by collecting competency and green economy keywords from trusted journal literature. Meanwhile, the quantitative method used is analysis and processing of project data and case studies of sustainable traffic projects, supported by questionnaire data. Results: 40% of civil engineering companies have in-depth knowledge of environmental regulations that apply in Indonesia. Cities like Jakarta are still lagging behind in implementing smart traffic systems. Of the 100 major cities in the world, Jakarta ranks 85th in terms of adoption of smart traffic technology, with implementation still below 20%. 30% of civil engineering professionals in Indonesia report strong collaboration between civil engineers, environmental experts and urban planners. Green projects in Indonesia have only reached USD 15 billion of the need of around USD 500 billion to achieve the national emission reduction target by 2030. 23% of infrastructure projects in Indonesia use environmentally friendly technology in their construction phase. This shows the low adoption of green technology in civil infrastructure. Conclusion: The government can promote more green technology projects, such as implementing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards or the Green Building Council Indonesia and encouraging cross-disciplinary projects by forming teams consisting of various experts, including environmental experts, transportation planners, and engineers, from the planning stage to implementation.  While increasing understanding of green financing through seminars, workshops and training in the civil engineering sector, as well as encouraging easier access to green financing schemes from local and international financial institutions
