Abstract

This research aims to (1) identify relevant soft skills for students in hair treatment services at SMKN 1 Tegal, (2) design an effective enrichment book model to enhance students' soft skills, (3) compile an enrichment book that effectively improves soft skill competencies in hair treatment services, (4) analyze the feasibility and practicality of implementing the enrichment book in the learning process, and (5) determine its effectiveness in learning hair treatment services. This study employs Research and Development (RD) using the ADDIE model from Dick and Carey. Data collection techniques include questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. The population consists of Class XII students of SMKN 1 Tegal, with two classes as samples, divided into control and experimental groups. Data analysis techniques involve normality tests, homogeneity tests, t-tests, and feasibility and effectiveness tests. The results indicate a positive and significant impact of the Soft Skills Competency Enrichment Book Model on students’ hair treatment skills. Teacher and student needs analysis includes student requirements, user analysis, and facility evaluation. Media development involves media and format selection, question compilation, and application design. Validation results show 93% for material and 94% for media aspects. Learning effectiveness is demonstrated by an increase in experimental class performance from 18% to 85%, proving the model's significant impact on enhancing students' hair treatment service skills.

Abstract

This study looks at how well role-playing exercises improve English proficiency among Thai primary pupils, with an eye toward speaking abilities, self-confidence, and attitudes about English. Data were gathered by means of speaking tests both before and after running role-playing activities using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach. Students' speaking skills showed a notable improvement; the average proficiency score rose from 57.5 in Cycle 1 to 68.13 in Cycle 2. Furthermore, the proportion of students reaching the minimal speaking score of 65 changed from 50% in Cycle 1 to 81.25% in Cycle 2. These findings underline the need for using interactive teaching strategies, including role-playing, to close the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, thereby improving English communication abilities among students.

Abstract

This study examines the connection between EFL students' speaking confidence, gender, and English competency. A speaking test and an English speaking confidence questionnaire were completed by 68 students (27 men and 41 females). Speaking confidence (p = 0.328) and gender (p = 0.379) had non-significant p-values, and regression analysis revealed that they only explained 2.6% of the variance in English proficiency (R2 = 0.026). Speaking confidence (t = 0.079, p = 0.937) and English proficiency (t = -0.877, p = 0.384) did not significantly differ between genders, according to t-tests. These results imply that other variables might have a greater impact on English proficiency. This study is important because it highlights the limited impact of gender and speaking confidence on EFL proficiency, prompting exploration of alternative factors and potentially more effective pedagogical approaches to enhance language acquisition.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a critical skill in EFL education, yet it often receives less attention than other language skills. Traditional listening materials frequently fail to reflect real-world language use, limiting their effectiveness in developing learners’ listening proficiency. Despite the recognized benefits of authentic listening materials, there is limited research on students' perceptions of their effectiveness in improving listening skills. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of MA Hidayatul Insan students regarding the use of authentic listening materials. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire completed by 100 students and interviews with five participants. The findings reveal that students perceive authentic materials as engaging and beneficial for improving listening skills, vocabulary, and understanding of native speakers. However, challenges such as the difficulty level of the materials and lack of familiarity with native speech patterns were noted. The study concludes that incorporating authentic materials can enhance listening proficiency, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to address these challenges.

Abstract

This study explores the use of terms of address by local people (Krama Desa Adat) in Lemukih village, Buleleng Regency, Bali. The research identifies the types, functions, and social factors influencing these terms of address. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and recordings, then analyzed using the Huberman Data Analysis Model (Miles and Huberman, 1994). The study revealed 27 distinct terms of address used by the local community, categorized into personal pronouns, kinship terms, first names, power and hierarchy, and mockery terms. Each term serves unique functions, such as attracting attention, showing politeness and behavior, indicating power and hierarchy, reflecting identity, or expressing intimacy. For example, terms like Bape (Father) and Mbok (Sister) signify politeness, while Bayan and Nyarik denote power and hierarchy. The study also highlights six social factors influencing their use: gender, age, cultural norms, power and hierarchy, context/setting, and social status. These terms are deeply rooted in cultural values and reflect the intricate relationship between language, social structure, and community interactions. The findings emphasize the unique linguistic characteristics of Lemukih village and the need for preserving its local dialect, especially as younger generations increasingly shift to using Indonesian. This research provides significant insights into the sociolinguistic dynamics of Lemukih village and contributes to the broader understanding of linguistic diversity and cultural preservation in Bali.
