Abstract

This study aimed to examine the habituation strategies of religious activities and their impact on students’ religious character development at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Kemlagi. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method to gain an in-depth understanding of the implementation process and the influence of religious habituation within the context of vocational education. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, educational staff, and students from various grade levels. The findings indicated that routinely and structurally conducted religious habituation—such as congregational prayers, Qur’anic recitations (tadarus), religious sermons (pengajian), and the management of infaq funds—significantly contributed to instilling spiritual and social values that shaped students’ character. These activities enhanced discipline and responsibility and fostered social awareness and sincerity. The success of this habituation was greatly influenced by the role of teachers as moral exemplars and the active involvement of all school elements, including support from students’ parents. However, the study also identified challenges, such as a lack of family supervision, negative social-environmental influences, and excessive use of technology, potentially hindering religious character development. The study recommended strengthening the synergy among schools, teachers, and families to maintain consistency in habituation practices and to manage technology use so that religious values could continue to grow in students’ daily lives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of disciplinary character in building student self-regulation learning in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at SMAN 2 Palangka Raya. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study involved 1 PAI teacher, 8 students who met the learning discipline criteria, and supporting informants in the form of BK teachers and student waka in class X-6. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The results of the study show that the character of discipline has a fundamental role in building students' self-regulation learning. From observations of learning discipline indicators according to Arikunto, which include attendance, attention during learning, assignment completion, and completeness of learning equipment, 8 students were found who met all learning discipline criteria. These students showed better ability to manage time, monitor the learning process, and evaluate academic achievement independently in accordance with the characteristics of self-regulation learning presented by Yong-Chil. The example of PAI teachers who are consistent in demonstrating disciplined behavior, combined with structured learning strategies such as weekly lesson planning systems, learning reflection journals, and active learning techniques, has proven effective in integrating the three phases of self-regulation learning according to Zimmerman, namely planning, monitoring, and evaluation. However, the study also identified both internal inhibiting factors such as time management difficulties and lack of metacognitive awareness, as well as external factors such as an unconducive learning environment and lack of social support. This study concludes that although the character of discipline plays an important role in building self-regulation learning, the process requires comprehensive support from teachers, families, and the education system to achieve optimal outcomes in PAI learning.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores students' perceptions of translanguaging in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context at Universitas Khairun. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with three undergraduate students, this research examines the roles, benefits, and challenges of using multiple languages (English, Bahasa Indonesia, and Melayu Ternate) in the classroom. Findings reveal that varying emotional responses, such as pride, confusion, and self-consciousness, emerge as translanguaging effects. Triangulation with faculty perspectives confirms translanguaging as an inclusive, efficient, and strategic pedagogical practice. The study concludes that translanguaging is a beneficial approach in multilingual EFL contexts to support deeper engagement and understanding.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a vital component of oral language proficiency, yet it remains underrepresented in English language instruction, particularly within higher education EFL/ESL contexts. This study aims to address this pedagogical gap by developing and validating a non-test self-assessment instrument to measure pronunciation self-efficacy among intermediate English language learners (ELLs). Grounded in constructivist and learner-centered theories, the instrument integrates four dimensions: Phonological Awareness (PA), Accent and Intonation Awareness (AIA), Self-Confidence (SC), and Self-Monitoring (SM). A total of 43 university students participated, selected via purposive sampling. The instrument, comprising 20 Likert-scale items, underwent content validation by three experts, followed by psychometric evaluation through Rasch analysis using Winsteps software. The results demonstrate strong psychometric properties across all dimensions. Item and person reliability values ranged from moderate to high (0.64–0.90), with Cronbach’s Alpha (KR-20) between 0.68 and 0.90, indicating internal consistency. Person separation indices varied from 1.33 to 2.70, suggesting sufficient ability discrimination. Item fit statistics were within acceptable thresholds, supporting construct validity. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of residuals confirmed unidimensionality, particularly for the SC construct, where Rasch explained variance reached 70.6%. PT-measure correlations further supported item discrimination quality. The validated instrument fills a methodological gap in the assessment of pronunciation self-efficacy and offers a practical, learner-centered tool for pedagogical implementation. It contributes to the advancement of self-regulated learning in pronunciation and opens pathways for further research into affective-cognitive correlates of pronunciation in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study evaluates English for Medical Purposes (EMP) materials used in language training institutions through a needs-based approach. Using a mixed-methods design, the research gathered data from medical students, instructors, and clinical supervisors to assess the relevance and effectiveness of EMP materials. Quantitative analysis revealed that while several units (e.g., “In and Around the Hospital,” “Admissions,” and “Monitoring the Patient”) effectively reflect authentic professional communication, others lacked contextual depth and interactive tasks. Qualitative insights highlighted strengths in authentic scenarios and practical dialogues, as well as gaps in empathetic and interprofessional communication training. The findings underscore the importance of aligning EMP materials with real-world clinical needs by integrating communicative competence, cultural appropriateness, and professional authenticity. This study provides recommendations for enhancing EMP curricula to support healthcare professionals in developing the language skills essential for patient-centered care and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Abstract

The ability to speak fluently and appropriately in German remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian learners at the A2 level, especially in contexts that demand spontaneous, pragmatic communication. Many existing evaluation tools focus narrowly on grammatical accuracy, often neglecting fluency, lexical diversity, and sociopragmatic competence. This study aims to develop a corpus-informed speaking evaluation instrument specifically designed for assessing A2-level German learners in Indonesian higher education. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) framework using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the instrument was systematically constructed through needs analysis, corpus-based task design, expert validation, and iterative refinement. Data collection involved interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, supported by expert judgment and inter-rater reliability testing. The final product includes task-based prompts grounded in authentic communicative scenarios, a Likert-based rubric covering fluency, accuracy, vocabulary range, and pragmatic appropriateness, and lexical input informed by spoken German corpora. Results demonstrate the instrument's validity and reliability, while qualitative feedback supports its pedagogical relevance. This study offers a novel contribution to corpus-informed language assessment and serves as a model for localized speaking evaluation tools aligned with CEFR standards.

Abstract

The language in the Police Investigation Report (BAP) is very important, yet interrogations in Indonesia often neglect politeness, resulting in suggestive and intimidating questions that can pressure witnesses, damage their "face," and disrupt memory accuracy. This research fills the gap in studies in Indonesia that have not yet holistically integrated pragmatic politeness theory (Brown & Levinson, Leech) with psycholinguistic and cognitive impacts (Sweller's cognitive load, Gernsbacher & Levelt's disfluency) on BAP witnesses. The aim is to identify the forms and violations of politeness in BAP questions, evaluate their psychological impact on witnesses, and formulate recommendations for fairer interrogations. This descriptive qualitative research analyzes BAP data using the politeness theory of Brown & Levinson and Leech (modified with "mitigation tools" for forensic contexts), as well as Sweller's cognitive load theory and Gernsbacher & Levelt's psycholinguistics to analyze witness responses (focusing on disfluency and lexical access). A layered analysis scheme is used to link politeness violations with the intensity of cognitive load. Validity is ensured through theory triangulation, peer debriefing, member checking, and audit trail. It is expected that this research will produce a multidimensional evaluation model and practical recommendations for fairer and more effective interrogation practices
