Abstract

Early reading ability is a fundamental skill that must be developed in early childhood as it forms the foundation for subsequent learning stages. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to analyze the implementation of flashcard game activities and their impact on early reading abilities of children aged 4-5 years at PAUD Al Adnan, Serang City. The research employed observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques, involving 10 children in Group A (6 boys and 4 girls) and their classroom teacher. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that flashcard games significantly enhanced children's letter recognition, phonological awareness, and simple word reading abilities. The visual, auditory, and kinesthetic aspects of flashcards effectively facilitated meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences. Children demonstrated increased motivation, active participation, and improved ability to recognize letters, pronounce syllables, and read simple words. However, individual differences in concentration levels, language development, and learning pace required differentiated instructional approaches. This study confirms that flashcards serve as effective educational game media in stimulating early reading development in young children when implemented with consistent repetition, appropriate guidance, and positive reinforcement from teachers.

Abstract

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a sensitive phase in human growth that determines a child's future learning, behaviour, and health. This paper analyses the importance of ECD, especially in the Indian context, focusing on historical developments, key milestones, current frameworks, challenges in implementation, and ongoing efforts to improve ECD services. The findings underscore that investment in quality ECD must be made so that more children, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, have opportunities to access the same. Last, there is a discussion on who plays what role in shaping effective ECD practices, such as government initiatives and NGOs.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the alignment of fairy tale books published by Naura with moral values and reasoning that are appropriate for early childhood.and its relevance to child development at RA Rumah Kreatif Wadas Kelir. Ontology in this context is interpreted as a fundamental study of the nature of values, character, and the formation of children's personalities which are represented through the storyline, characters, and moral messages in fairy tales. This study also examines whether these stories meet the criteria for quality literature that supports moral development in accordance with the developmental characteristics of early childhood. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach, combined with a case study design at RA Rumah Kreatif Wadas Kelir. The research findings indicate that Naura's fairy tale books effectively convey moral values relevant to children's daily experiences, such as obedience and perseverance. These values align with the typical moral reasoning stage in early childhood, which, according to Kohlberg's theory, corresponds to the pre-conventional level. The narratives presented in these books have ontological implications for early childhood education, particularly in fostering and supporting the moral development of young learners. The stories in this book can be a fun character learning medium, making it easier for teachers to instill good values, and supporting the formation of children's self-identity based on story literacy, while also providing practical recommendations for educators in optimizing the use of story books as a character learning medium.

Abstract

This study addresses the lack of meaningful planning in early childhood education (ECE) activities, particularly in the integration of traditional games. Traditional games possess rich educational value that can enhance learning experiences by making them joyful, meaningful, and mindful collectively referred to as deep learning in the context of this research, unrelated to artificial intelligence. The study aimed to explore how traditional games can be systematically implemented to foster deep learning in young children. Conducted as classroom action research, the study involved 16 children aged 5–6 years in a kindergarten setting, selected through purposive sampling. The research was carried out over two cycles, with data collected through structured observation and analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods to calculate developmental achievement percentages in cognitive, emotional, and social aspects. Results showed an increase in deep learning indicators: joyful learning rose from 62.5% in Cycle 1 to 87.5% in Cycle 2, meaningful learning from 56.3% to 81.3%, and mindful learning from 50.0% to 78.1%. These findings indicate that traditional games, when intentionally integrated into lesson plans, can significantly contribute to holistic child development. The study concludes that achieving deep learning through traditional games requires consistent implementation, teacher commitment, and thoughtful planning aligned with children's developmental stages.

Abstract

Purpose - Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by persistent difficulties in sustaining attention, which negatively impact children’s academic, social, and emotional functioning. One promising non-pharmacological intervention is Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT), an approach that combines cognitive-behavioral strategies with developmentally appropriate play activities to improve attention and self-regulation. Design/methods/approach - This study employed a literature review by searching PubMed, ScienceDirect, Sage Journal, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords. The inclusion criteria were articles in Indonesian or English, published between 2017–2025, with quasi-experimental or experimental designs, and focusing on CBPT interventions in children with ADD/ADHD. Study selection followed the PICOS framework and PRISMA analysis. Findings - From 26 identified articles, only 2 met the criteria. Findings showed that CBPT effectively reduced inattentive symptoms (Khatoon, A., Iqbal, N., & Masroor, 2020) and significantly improved attention and planning skills in children with ADHD (Hir et al., 2023). Research implications/limitations - Interventions were delivered in 10–20 sessions using structured play methods such as role play, modeling, storytelling, and puppet play. Originality/value - In conclusion, CBPT has proven effective in enhancing attention and executive function in children with ADD, supporting its application as an evidence-based non-pharmacological intervention in clinical and educational settings for children, families, and professionals.

Abstract

Purpose - Early childhood language and emergent literacy are often promoted through discrete activities or single instructional media, leaving limited evidence on how everyday classroom practices function as an integrated pedagogical system. This study examined language and literacy development practices at RA Nurul Ummah, Sidoarjo, Indonesia. It contributes a context-sensitive practical framework that connects social interaction, visual media, storytelling, and verbal routines rather than positioning one strategy as sufficient. Design/methods/approach - A descriptive qualitative design was employed. Data were generated through five classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and instructional documents involving 72 children aged 3–6 years, six teachers, one principal, and eight parents. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four interconnected patterns emerged: peer interaction expanded expressive language; visual media linked words to concrete meanings; interactive storytelling supported receptive and expressive language; and verbal instructions strengthened functional comprehension. Teacher questioning, vocabulary repetition, and emotionally safe dialogue enabled these practices to operate as a coherent learning environment. Findings - The findings indicate that language and literacy development was embedded in children’s daily participation rather than delivered as an isolated lesson. This study offers early childhood educators a practical basis for designing culturally responsive, interaction-rich language and literacy environments. Research implications/limitations – The findings offer practical guidance for creating culturally responsive and interaction-rich environments that support language and literacy development. However, as the study was conducted in a single kindergarten setting, further research across diverse institutions and participant groups is needed to confirm and extend these findings. Originality/value – This study extends understanding of language and literacy development by highlighting the role of culturally responsive daily participation in early childhood education.

Abstract

Purpose - This study examines the influence of democratic parenting style on early childhood discipline at TK Masyithoh I'anatut Thalibin Pati. Discipline is an essential aspect of character development, fundamentally shaped through appropriate parental guidance. Design/methods/approach – A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving a purposive sample of 53 parents of children aged 4–6 years. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires covering indicators of open communication, rule enforcement, and self-control. Findings - Simple linear regression analysis revealed that democratic parenting style has a significant positive effect on child discipline. The analysis yielded a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.944, indicating that 94.4% of the variation in child discipline can be explained by the parenting style. Research implications/limitations - While these findings strongly reinforce the theory that authoritative guidance fosters self-regulation, the exceptionally high R2 value suggests strong internal consistency and potential common method bias within the local context. Originality/value - This study provides empirical support for the effectiveness of democratic parenting style in fostering early childhood discipline and recommends that educators and parents implement communicative and responsive guidance to support optimal character development.
