Abstract

Canggu Tourism Village, a rapidly growing tourism destination, faces significant challenges in maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. In this context, adopting an environmental sustainability orientation becomes critical to ensuring that economic activities do not negatively affect the environment. This study investigates the impact of environmental sustainability orientation on environmental performance in Canggu Tourism Village, with a focus on the mediating role of environmental innovation and the moderating effect of environmental hostility. A quantitative approach was employed, collecting data from 122 tourism actors through a structured questionnaire using a judgment sampling technique. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4, examining both the outer and inner models. The findings reveal that environmental sustainability orientation significantly enhances environmental performance, both directly and indirectly, through environmental innovation. However, environmental hostility does not moderate the relationship between environmental sustainability orientation and environmental performance. These results underscore the importance of fostering environmental innovation as a pathway to sustainable tourism development, even in the face of external environmental challenges.

Abstract

Samalona Island, located in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, is one form of the richness of the diversity of islands in Indonesia. The livelihoods of business actors on this island depend on the number of tourists visiting the island. This study aims to determine how the role of culinary tourism business actors on Samalona Island continues to increase so that they can compete with other culinary tours. This study focuses on culinary tourism as an effort to develop and maintain a positive image of Indonesia in the international world through diplomacy, in this case, maritime diplomacy. Local and foreign tourists often visit this island to enjoy the natural beauty and coastal cuisine offered by business actors on this island. Business actors utilize various facilities on this island to continue managing their finances so that their lives remain sustainable and stable. Samalona Island, as a tourist island in Indonesia, needs to receive significant attention from the government and society so that this island remains one of the tourist choices for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the Indonesian maritime. The need for more data analyzing the role of culinary tourism business actors on Samalona Island is a novelty in this study.

Abstract

Local community involvement plays a critical role in the success of tourism development, particularly in community-based tourism (CBT). This study investigates the internal barriers to local community involvement in the Area Model Conservation and Education (AMCE), a CBT destination in Oro-Oro Ombo Village, Batu City, Indonesia. Using purposive and snowball sampling techniques, data were collected from informants, including tourism destination managers, village government employees, Village Consultative Body (VCB) members, and local community leaders. Data collection methods comprised in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, which were subsequently analyzed through content analysis. The findings reveal five categories of tourism development in AMCE, including economic, social, environmental, geographical, and institutional. The dominant inhibitors come from the institutional category, such as top-down leadership style, less transparent governance, internal conflicts between managers, and elite capture in AMCE. These barriers hinder effective community participation and sustainable tourism development in the region. The study emphasizes the need for enhanced organizational governance, better financial resource allocation, and improved coordination and collaboration with government agencies, universities, and other stakeholders. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives, including education and training programs for tourism destination managers, are essential to overcoming these barriers. The results provide critical insights for policymakers and practitioners to foster inclusive and sustainable tourism development in CBT destinations.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the tourism industry by restricting social activities and raising concerns about overcrowding at popular destinations. To address these challenges, effective strategies are needed to manage visitor distribution. This study analyzes social media data from a travel platform, including reviews and ratings, to assess the distribution and popularity of tourist destinations in West Java. The research explores the potential of social media as a resource for local tourism planning and development, aiming to enhance West Java's rich offerings in arts, culture, culinary experiences, and adventure tourism. Findings reveal visitor patterns, with a concentration of tourists in urban areas compared to districts, and highlight the popularity of natural attractions in Bogor, Sukabumi, Bandung, Garut, and Pangandaran. Additionally, Cirebon emerges as a key hub for cultural tourism and transit. By leveraging reviews and spatial data, this study underscores the role of social media in supporting sustainable tourism strategies. Tools like ArcGIS are recommended to visualize tourist patterns, promote ecotourism, and achieve West Java's green tourism goals in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

As one of the largest global economic sectors, tourism significantly contributes to economic and social development. However, it is also a leading cause of environmental degradation, including ecosystem disruption, carbon emissions, and resource exploitation. Tourists ' pro-environmental behavior (PEB) is crucial in mitigating tourism's adverse effects through sustainable actions like responsible waste management and green transportation. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method to synthesize research on PEB in tourism from 2013 to 2023. Drawing from 24 peer-reviewed articles from the Scopus database, the review identifies key themes: intrinsic and extrinsic behavioral drivers, the transformative role of technology, emotional engagement, organizational and community-level factors, and the unique challenges of rural tourism. The findings reveal that intrinsic factors, such as personal norms and moral obligations, are foundational drivers of PEB, while extrinsic factors, including environmental policies and supportive infrastructure, enable sustainable actions. Technology, particularly AI, social media, blockchain, and augmented reality, emerges as a dynamic antecedent, enhancing transparency and decision-making in sustainable tourism practices. Emotional engagement, such as awe and attachment to destinations, amplifies tourists' long-term commitments to sustainability. However, significant research gaps remain, including the need for longitudinal studies, geographic diversity, and cross-cultural analyses. The study proposes a conceptual model integrating these factors with sociocultural contexts, moderating their effectiveness. This model offers theoretical insights and practical implications for policymakers, destination managers, and researchers. The tourism sector can promote PEB and advance sustainable practices globally by addressing identified gaps and adopting innovative strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate visitors' assessments of urban green open spaces based on the Homo Urbanicus theory, encompassing the dimensions of people, opportunity, event, and space. Using data from 178 respondents visiting green open spaces (GOS) in Bandung, the analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings indicate that both male and female visitors generally perceive the provision of primary and supporting facilities in GOS similarly. They equally recognize these facilities as essential without distinguishing between genders. However, concerning comfort, perceptions of primary and supporting facilities differ based on gender. Therefore, park management should design primary and supporting facilities to function generically for both men and women while differentiating comfort elements based on gender-specific preferences.

Abstract

The development of shared value in the metaverse and the transformation of perspectives and benefits arising from its advent, especially in tourism, is a domain of research that this paper aims to contribute to. With the above observation of future tourism metaverses, this research attempts to describe the complexity of requirements, designs, and interactions that should be considered for future tourism metaverses towards experiencing the importance of metaverse in tourism. We report findings from a systematic literature examination of 82 peer-reviewed papers published in the Scopus databases, using terminology including but not limited to tourism, tourist, holiday, vacation, hospitality, and metaverse. The research results show that the metaverse can drastically change tourism by providing virtual, hyper-realistic experiences to complement physical journeys. The attributes of metaverse tourism, including stimulus modalities, strength in accessibility, interactivity, amenities, activities, ancillary services, etc., are identified in this work as being vital for maximizing customer satisfaction and engagement. Explore virtuality before reality: Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), or mixed reality (MR) allows tourists to go through destinations virtually prior to a physical visit; these advancements support better travel planning and decision-making. Moreover, it highlights the significance of inclusive design and adaptive technologies to enhance accessibility to metaverse tourism for diverse audiences. This research contributes to theoretical and practical context throughout the discourse of employing the metaverse for digital marketing, branding, and revenue generation but also integrates environmental aspects of travel through the reduction of related emissions. The implication that emerges from examining the complex requirements and design of metaverse tourism can lay the groundwork for future research and projects in this work area in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and human-centered design approach.
