Abstract

Indonesian students continue encounter difficulties when it comes to reading English academic materials as English is their foreign language. The study aims to explore the reading strategies employed by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in order to improve their reading comprehension and to determine whether a significant correlation exists between reading strategies and reading comprehension. The study involved 60 participants from one senior high school in Batam, Indonesia. The study utilized Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) and reading comprehension test. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was performed to determine the normality of the data distribution while Pearson correlation was utilized to investigate the interrelation among the variables. The results showed that students most commonly employed problem-solving strategies when reading and there was a significant correlation between reading strategy and reading comprehension. The findings suggest that students who employ a variety of reading strategies, including problem-solving strategies, support reading strategies, and global reading strategies, perform better on reading comprehension assessments. The study made a significant addition to the field of English language teaching by highlighting the need of raising EFL students’ awareness and teaching them proper reading strategy for comprehending scholarly texts.

Abstract

The principal aim of this research was to understand the strategies employed in Project Based Learning (PBL) implementation in higher education setting, evaluate its impact on students' learning experiences, and pinpoint challenges faced during its application. Employing a case study method, insights were derived from in-depth examinations of specific PBL implementations within the course, facilitated by structured interviews, observation, and document analysis. The research participants are two lecturers and twenty students. The lecturers were chosen for their extensive experience in PBL implementation, while the students were purposively selected to ensure diversity in terms of academic performance, gender, and previous exposure to PBL. Thematic analysis was employed as the methodological framework for scrutinizing and interpreting qualitative data sourced from in-depth interviews and observational data. Key findings highlight the critical importance of a structured PBL introduction, the essence of real-world application through fieldwork, and the central role of collaboration, especially leveraging modern digital platforms. While the benefits of PBL in enhancing conceptual grasp and promoting soft skills development were evident, challenges, notably in team dynamics, resource provision, and the inherent unpredictability of real-world tasks, were also brought to the fore. By aligning the insights from the Participative Planning course with established PBL literature, the study illuminates the universal principles of PBL and their associated challenges. Conclusively, the paper underscores PBL's potency as a transformative pedagogical tool, emphasizing the necessity for informed strategies, adaptability, and iterative refinement for its efficacious implementation in diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

Education is an effort to realize human ideals to become an ideal figure. Education is always evolving with the changing times. This research aims to describe the development of the curriculum and its relevance to the goals of Indonesian education based on the background of events in traditional, modern and globalization times. The method used in this research is systematic literature review through data search using the Publish or Perish application. Based on the search results and criteria set, 20 data became the primary source in this research. The results showed that in the traditional era, the goal of Indonesian education led to the formation of moral and virtuous learners based on the teachings of the religion that was developing at that time. Humans were educated in one direction with the lecture method in order to carry out religious values and uphold morality. However, during the colonial period, education in Indonesia was dehumanized because education was directed to fill the needs of the colonial nation. In the modern era or after the colonial period, the purpose of education experienced humanization because the purpose of education was based on the UUD 1945, namely to educate the nation's life. The government began to compile and develop a curriculum as a national education system. In the era of globalization, the education system is aligned with the challenges of 21st century education. The education system leads to improving the ability of students to learn, digital literacy, and have a career in the future.

Abstract

Ineffective learning activities and lack of learning innovation can be the cause of low learning outcomes and lack of student activity. This research aims to investigate the effects of using OdLM methods in learning mathematics in elementary school. Through this research, it is hoped that empirical evidence can be found regarding increasing student activity in the learning process and its impact on learning outcomes in geometry This research uses a classroom action research (PTK) approach with the Kemmis and Mc Taggart model where each cycle consists of four steps,, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research instruments used were observation sheets and written tests. This research data analysis uses qualitative descriptive. The research results showed that students' activities and learning outcomes increased after implementing OdLM in Cycle I, obtaining an average score of 65% (high) and in Cycle II it increased to a score of 73% (high). Meanwhile, students' learning outcomes in Cycle I received an average score of 66.67% -72.22%, then in Cycle II it was 100%. It can be said that the application of OdLM methods can increase the activities and learning outcomes of elementary school students.
