Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore three lecturers of English Education Study Program experiences in teaching writing online, types of online learning platform, Techniques that used in teaching writing online, and the challenges faced by the lecturers. This research applied descriptive qualitative method and three lecturers participated as respondents of this research. Data were collected through interview and checklist questionnaire and the data were analyzed using content analysis. The results showed that in teaching writing online, the lecturers used a number of online learning platform where they have been familiar those online learning platform, such as Whatsapp messenger, Virtual class, Zoom meeting, and Google meet. Further, in terms of techniques in teaching writing, it is found that the lecturers use Picture technique, Reading technique, Teaching organization technique, Controlled writing technique, Mind mapping, and List techniques. It was also found in this research that there a number of challenges faced by the lecturers during teaching writing through online;(1) Lecturers got challenges to control students during writing their drafts. (2) it is sometime the lecturer get challenges of time management, it is take time to access the online learning platform and it is also some of the online platform should be paid monthly and the last, the lecturers has limited internet quality access.

Abstract

Teaching writing as a process at the university level leads lecturers to give feedback on students’ writing drafts. This research aims to investigate the feedback strategies used by the lecturer in giving feedback to students. This is a qualitative case study research designed for several reasons. This study was conducted in a natural setting in which the researcher focus on feedback strategies used by lecturersto respond to students’ writing drafts. A purposive sample was used in choosing the subject of this research (Alwasilah, 2012). The instrument of this study were researchers. Researchersactas non-participant of an observer (Djam'an Satory and Aan Komariah, 2010). This study was conducted at Universitas Khairun Ternate. The subjects of this research were fourth-semester students who study essay writing online. Data of this study were obtained from students’ documents. Content analysis was focused in this study. The findings in this research were consistent with the ones presented by several scholars in teaching writing.There were several feedback strategies used to respond to students’ writing, namely indirect feedback, direct feedback, and commentary feedback to respond to students’ writing.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the Indonesian language errors in the speech of the radio announcer of the Republic of Indonesia (RRI) Ternate. There are two formulations of the problem in this study, namely (1). What is the form of error in the omission of phonemes in the speech of the broadcaster of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Ternate? (2). What are the errors in adding phonemes in the speech process of the broadcaster of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Ternate. The objectives of this research are: (1). Explain the forms of omission of phonemes contained in the speech of the broadcaster of Radio Republik IIndonesia (RRI) Ternate. (2) Explaining errors in adding phonemes in the speech process of the broadcaster of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Ternate. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The collection techniques used in this research are listening and recording techniques.Based on the data that has been obtained, the researcher analyzes the data to look for errors that occur during the broadcasting process, such as pronunciation errors due to omission of phonemes and pronunciation errors due to addition of phonemes. The results of the analysis of errors in Indonesian at the phonological level of the radio broadcaster of the Republic of Indonesia (RRI) Ternate, there are forms of pronunciation errors, namely pronunciation errors due to omission of phonemes and pronunciation errors due to addition of phonemes. The omission of a phoneme is the loss of one phoneme in a whole word, while the addition of a phoneme occurs because the speaker adds a phoneme to a word.

Abstract

Language is one of the results of human culture and has a very significant role in social life. The purpose of this article articles is to find out about the change, shift and maintenance of a language. There are several theories that can be used as references in studying a language, especially those related to the topics and relevant examples. The factors that can influence the language change, shift and maintenance are economic, social and political factors, demographics, and attitudes and values.

Abstract

This essay discusses the processes of globalization in English language teaching in Indonesia. First, it addresses the status of English language in the world and how English plays its position in Indonesian context within its diverse linguistic background. Second, from the historical perspectives, it discusses the processes of globalization in Indonesian ELT education and curriculum policies both in language pedagogies and teaching materials and how issues and concerns occur. Then, it discusses how the presence of technological advancement in any form facilitatess ELT in Indonesia. All parties in Indonesia including policy makers, educationists, and teachers should should take the most benefits from globalization through maximizing ELT partnership programs both nationally and internationally such as trainings, workshops, and sholarships for further studies. Similarly, the present development of information technology needs to be taken into account for better ELT in Indonesia by providing sufficient funding, particularly from Indonesian government (both central and local) spent for both sustainable ELT human resources development and their supporting facilities. These efforts are very important to enable students to succeed in achieving their communicative competencies in English to be able to survive in global competitiveness.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan ntuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menulis surat resmi pada siswa kelas VII-4 SMP Negeri 2 Kota Ternate dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran STAD. Desain penelitian adalah penelitian tindakan (Classroom Action Research) dengan instrumen yang digunakan adalah angket, soal tes, wawancara, lembar observasi guru dan siswa. Adapun teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah teknik analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Berdasarkan analisis data, disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran dengan menggunakan model  Student Team – Achievement Division (STAD) dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar pada pembelajaran menulis surat resmi. Dari hasil penelitian ini data yang diperoleh adalah kemampuan menulis surat resmi siswa pada siklus I menunjukkan dari 18 siswa, yang telah mencapai ketuntasan  dalam belajar sebanyak 22%, sedangkan siswa yang belum tuntas sebanyak 78%. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan siklus II dengan perolehan peningkatan data kemampuan menulis surat resmi mencapai ketuntasan sebanyak 67%, sedangkan yang belum tuntas sebanyak 33%. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran dengan menggunakan model STAD dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis surat resmi kelas VII-4 SMP Negeri 2 Kota Ternate pada materi menulis surat resmi.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim to determine the use of code switching and code mixing, also to find out the factors causing code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning in class X SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City. The method used in this study is a Qualitative Descriptive Method. The data source was Indonesian language teacher and class X students of SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City, which only consisted of a portion of 20 students. The research data is the use of code switching and code mixing of class X students of the 6th eerily of Ternate City. Based on data analysis, it was concluded that the data collection technique used was direct observation of a problem located in SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City. This study aimed to obtain additional data. This interview was conducted to reveal the effectiveness of the use of code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning. Records conducted by researchers to obtain data from the research objectives. Occurrence of the use of code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning for class X students of SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City, namely the use of code switching and code mixing is the switching of formal language codes, informal language code switching, and the occurrence of code switching between languages while the code mix is mixed code of words, phrases, clauses. Factors causing code switching and code mixing in Indonesian language learning in class X SMA Negeri 6 Ternate City are the occurrence of code switching due to speakers or speakers, listeners or interlocutors, Changes in the situation due to the presence of a third person, Changes in the situation from formal to informal or conversely, Change of Speaker Topic while mixed code because of the background of the attitudes of speakers and linguists.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out (1) the way of the teacher to involve the students in bilingual interaction, (2) the EFL students’ attitude towards bilingual interaction, and (3) the impact of bilingual interaction on the students’ bilingual achievement. This research employed a case study design. The participants of this research consisted of 1 EFL teacher and 4 EFL students. The data were obtained through observation, interview, and document. The data were analyzed based on procedure of data analysis which consisted of data collection, data display, data condensation and conclusion: drawing/ verification. The findings showed that (1) there were three steps in teaching process by bilingual interaction, they were beginning the class, learning process, and closing the class. It also showed that teacher’s way are classified into a highly advocating teacher (HAT) who advocates use of bilingual interaction and endeavor to find an alternative ways to using L1/L2 during teaching; (2) there were two kinds of the EFL student’s attitude toward bilingual interaction. Those were positive attitude and negative attitude. It also showed that there were some categories that EFL students’ attitude toward bilingual interaction in EFL classroom. They were highly interesting student (HIS) where student feeling that cause special attention to some object and readiness to learn about something, highly monitoring teacher (HMT) where the teacher monitors her instructional language to attract students’ attention in learning English based on their condition, and highly responding student (HRS) where student respond the explanation of material from teacher seriously; and (3) there were two of students’ bilingual achievement, those are high achievement and low achievement. So, it is showed that bilingual interaction give impact on the student’s achievement especially of students’ bilingual achievement. It also showed that there were some categories that EFL students’ attitude toward bilingual interaction in EFL classroom. They were highly monitoring teacher (HMT) where the teacher monitors her instructional language to attract students’ attention in learning English based on their condition and highly responding student (HRS) where student respond the explanation of material from teacher seriously. The findings led to the conclusion that bilingual interaction made the teacher- students and student- students more interactive within the classroom. In addition, the students were even confident to speak and influenced their attitude so they were actively participating in classroom activities and felt comfort interacting to the class by using bilingual interaction. Moreover, a teacher’s expectation shaped a teacher’s behavior, attempting to teach more and create a more positive atmosphere that led them to higher achievement.

Abstract

Novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly adalah Novel yang berisi tentang kekuatan sebuah mimpi dan perjuangan hidup yang keras dari seekor ayam petelur untuk mendapatkan kebebasan. Kisah tokoh utama yang bernama Daun merupakan seekor ayam petelur yang berjuang untuk tetap bertahan hidup untuk mewujudkan impiannya menjadi seorang Ibu yang dapat mengerami telur dan memiliki anak ayam. Peneliti memilih novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly karena tertarik dengan penyajian kisah perjalanan hidup berbeda pada umumnya, yaitu dari seekor ayam petelur. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah selain mengetahui proses perjalanan hidup yang dijalani tokoh utama, peneliti juga tertarik untuk meneliti karakteristik tokoh utama Daun dalam novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kalitatif, sedangkan teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik kepustakaan dan teknik simak catat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tokoh utama Daun, memiliki 5 karakter, yaitu optimis, penyayang, berani, hormat dan protektif.

Abstract

Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam penelitian ini. Peneliti membagikan link kepada siswa yang berisi kuesioner tentang persepsi siswa dalam strategi belajar kemudian siswa mengisi kuesioner melalui google form. Dari hasil tanggapan siswa maka hasilnya pun sudah otomatis masuk di google form. Setelah itu peneliti menganalisis hasil tanggapan dari siswa. Subjek dari penelitian ini yaitu sepuluh siswa di kelas tiga jurusan keperawatan di SMKN 3 Tikep. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa hanya 30% siswa saja yang memiliki strategi belajarnya sendiri, namun meskipun begitu mereka aktif dalam pembelajaran di kelas karna 70% dari mereka menjawab selalu. Berdasarkan hasil tanggapan dari siswa, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa strategi belajar siswa adalah strategi pembelajaran metakognitif karena siswa mencoba untuk mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik, strategi pembelajaran meta-kognitif digunakan untuk mengawasi atau belajar bahasa langsung yang melibatkan berbagai proses, seperti perencanaan, memprioritaskan, menetapkan tujuan, dan manajemen diri. Peneliti menyimpulkan strategi meta-kognitif karena dilihat dari hasil tanggapan yang menjawab 80% dari mereka berusaha mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik, untuk mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik maka siswa harus merencanakan bagaimana bisa mendapatkan hasil belajar yang baik.
