Abstract

This study is motivated by fundamental changes in documentary cinema resulting from the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Documentary films, which have traditionally been understood as a medium for recording reality, are now moving toward a new form as a medium for algorithm-based visual reconstruction. The main problem of this study lies in how visual language and algorithmic narrative in the AI documentary film Nusantara construct historical reality, cultural memory, and Indonesian identity amid the development of digital cinema. This study aims to analyze the visual language, algorithmic narrative, and forms of mediamorphosis in the AI documentary film Nusantara, which received the Best AI Documentary award at Cannes 2025. This research employs a descriptive-interpretive qualitative method with a case study approach. The research data consist of scenes, visual composition, color, lighting, image movement, narrative text, cultural symbols, historical setting, editing rhythm, and forms of AI-based visual reconstruction. Data were collected through audiovisual observation, documentation, note-taking, transcription, and scene segmentation, while the data were analyzed using visual semiotic analysis, narrative analysis, and mediamorphosis analysis. The findings present Nusantara as a representation of the transformation of documentary cinema from the recording of reality to algorithmic reconstruction. The film’s visual language is constructed through the figure of Gajah Mada, symbols of Majapahit, the Palapa Oath, dramatic colors, contrasting lighting, and colossal scenes. Its algorithmic narrative appears through the use of AI in constructing historical memory, expanding visual space, and presenting Indonesian cultural identity to a global audience. This study strengthens the position of AI documentary film as a new creative space for Indonesian cinema, while also demanding historical accuracy, technological transparency, and ethical responsibility in cultural representation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the Quizizz application in improving students’ motivation and learning outcomes in mathematics. The research employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by analyzing relevant scientific articles published between 2019 and 2022. The articles were obtained from Google Scholar, Garuda, and Google Search. The results of the review indicate that the use of Quizizz as a game-based learning medium has a positive impact on students’ motivation, interest, and learning outcomes. Interactive features such as instant feedback, leaderboards, and engaging visual displays create a more enjoyable learning environment and encourage active student participation. In addition, Quizizz helps students understand mathematical concepts more easily. However, its implementation still faces several challenges, including dependence on internet connectivity and limited supporting facilities. Despite these limitations, Quizizz is considered an effective and innovative learning medium that can enhance the quality of mathematics learning and promote active student engagement. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for educators in selecting innovative teaching strategies and as a foundation for developing technology-based learning in the future.

Abstract

This paper examines the voice and (in)visibility of student interpreters engaged in English–Indonesian diplomatic interpreting tasks under two conditions: with and without Computer-Assisted Interpreting (CAI) tools. Drawing on Hermans’ (1996) framework of the translator’s voice in translated narrative, specifically his three cases of discursive presence (pragmatic displacement requiring intervention for the Implied Hearer, self-reflexive and self-referential engagement with the medium of communication, and contextual overdetermination), and extending these to the spoken, real-time domain of interpreting, this study analyses transcripts and written reflections produced by 40 undergraduate students at an Indonesian university. The analysis also attends to passivisation as an additional marker of the interpreter’s voice. Findings demonstrate that all three of Hermans’ cases are systematically instantiated in student interpreter output, that CAI tool use intensifies certain manifestations of the interpreter’s voice (notably contextual overdetermination and self-referential engagement with the medium) while leaving others unaffected, and that student reflections reveal a metacognitive awareness of their own agency in the interpreting process that is both produced and constrained by the technological environment. The paper argues that making the interpreter’s voice analytically visible is pedagogically valuable: it reveals individual agency, ideological positioning, and identity construction within interpreter-mediated communication.

Abstract

Linguistic competence is a fundamental foundation in the development of the academic abilities of elementary school students. This study aims to analyze the linguistic competency profile of elementary school students through a study of vocabulary, reading skills, and writing using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The research method uses the PRISMA Model by searching literature from the Scopus database, Google Scholar, Garuda Portal, and ERIC for the period 2014-2024. The inclusion criteria include empirical research that focuses on elementary school students with at least one component of linguistic competence. Data analysis uses thematic synthesis to identify patterns and themes in the literature. The results showed that the vocabulary of elementary school students was dominated by nouns (37%) and verbs (35%) with the root word (62%) as the main form, reflecting the mastery of concrete concepts. Reading proficiency showed that 39.6% of students were not fluent in reading, while writing proficiency showed the greatest challenge with 65.2% of students not mastering writing skills. There was a strong correlation (rxy = 0.993) between linguistic intelligence and reading ability. Influencing factors include individual, social, cultural, and pedagogical aspects. This study confirms that linguistic competence is an integrated multidimensional construct, requiring a holistic, contextual, and transformative learning approach. The findings provide important implications for the development of integrated curriculum, learning strategies, and assessment systems to improve the quality of literacy in primary schools.

Abstract

The globalization era requires tourism vocational students to acquire proficiency in foreign languages as a fundamental competency for the hospitality industry. However, this increasing demand may influence their attitudes toward Indonesian as the national language. This study aims to analyze the language attitudes of students at Palembang Polytechnic of Tourism as an effort to preserve national identity amid the rapid expansion of globalization. Language attitudes are examined through three dimensions: cognitive, affective, and conative. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observations and semi-structured interviews involving students from various study programs selected using purposive sampling. The findings reveal a dual pattern of language attitudes among the students. From the cognitive and conative perspectives, students demonstrate a highly positive attitude toward English, primarily driven by instrumental motivation associated with broader employment opportunities in the global tourism industry. Nevertheless, from the affective perspective, students continue to express strong pride in Indonesian as an essential symbol of their cultural and national identity. The study concludes that implementing a proportional bilingual policy within higher education institutions is necessary to produce graduates who are globally competitive while maintaining their national identity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of vocabulary mastery among elementary school students, which is caused by the dominance of teaching methods such as lectures, repetitive drills, and worksheet-based assignments that lack context and minimal interaction. This situation results in low early literacy skills among students in understanding and using vocabulary meaningfully. This study aims to formulate and preliminarily validate the L-KARSA Model (Socio-Cultural Augmented Reality Collaborative Literacy) as an innovative vocabulary learning model. The study employs a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, implemented through the expert validation stage, encompassing needs analysis, model design, and prototype development. The research subjects consisted of elementary school teachers, first-grade students, and three expert validators. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, and analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approaches with the Content Validity Index (CVI). The results indicate that the L-KARSA Model was successfully formulated into six learning phases integrating collaborative literacy, Augmented Reality technology, and sociocultural values. Validation results showed that all items achieved an I-CVI ? 0.80 with an S-CVI/Ave of 1.00, falling into the “highly valid” category. These findings indicate that the L-KARSA model possesses strong theoretical and construct validity and has the potential to serve as an innovative alternative in contextual, interactive, and student-experience-based vocabulary learning. This study contributes to the development of a learning model based on the integration of technology and a sociocultural approach in the early literacy phase.

Abstract

Madurese riddles (bhâk-tebbhâghân) are part of oral tradition that function not only as entertainment but also as symbolic cultural expressions reflecting the linguistic creativity, worldview, and collective cognition of the Madurese community. However, the continuity of this tradition is increasingly threatened by modernization and shifting communication patterns among younger generations. This study aims to (1) identify the forms of Madurese riddles, (2) analyze the cultural values embedded within them, and (3) reconstruct their relevance as local wisdom-based Indonesian language learning materials. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using folklore and cultural linguistics perspectives. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and literature review involving children, adult community members, a community leader, and an Indonesian language teacher in Situbondo Regency. Data analysis was conducted through data condensation, classification, interpretation, and thematic analysis. The findings reveal four dominant forms of Madurese riddles, namely metaphorical, acronymic, erotic, and deceptive riddles. Metaphorical riddles were found to be the most dominant form, indicating that the Madurese community tends to construct meaning through symbolic association and analogical reasoning rooted in everyday cultural experiences. The riddles contain sociopsychological and erotic values that reflect humor, social criticism, symbolic negotiation, and local cultural perspectives. From a pedagogical perspective, Madurese riddles are relevant to Indonesian language learning, particularly in observation report text (Laporan Hasil Observasi/LHO) learning, because they encourage inferential thinking, descriptive competence, cultural literacy, and contextual learning. This study contributes to the development of linguistic folklore and culturally responsive language learning by reconstructing oral tradition not only as a cultural artifact but also as transformative pedagogical material within Indonesian language education.

Abstract

Despite the growing number of studies on literary works and character education, limited research has specifically examined how social reality in contemporary Indonesian short stories reflects character education values through a mimetic perspective. This gap highlights the need to explore the relationship between literary representation and educational values in a more focused textual context. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of the mimetic approach with character education analysis in Aris Kurniawan’s short story “Tiga Cita-Cita Kasmin.” This study aims to describe the representation of the protagonist’s life reality and the values of character education in the short story “Tiga Cita-Cita Kasmin” by Aris Kurniawan using a mimetic approach. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with the short story serving as the primary data source. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the short story represents the reality of lower-class rural community life through Kasmin’s experiences within the family, society, Islamic boarding school, and literary community. This representation embodies dominant character education values, including simplicity, gratitude, modesty, love and affection, adaptability, social awareness, creativity, empathy, religiosity, discipline, hard work, responsibility, honesty, curiosity, appreciation of achievement, self-confidence, and perseverance. Theoretically, this study confirms that the mimetic approach remains relevant for uncovering the relationship between social reality and character education values in literary works. Practically, the short story has strong potential to be used as teaching material in literature learning and character education. However, this study is limited to a single short story and has not examined its classroom implementation; therefore, further studies are recommended to conduct comparative analyses and classroom-based implementation testing.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the discourse construction of the four-island dispute between Aceh and North Sumatra in local media coverage. It employs a critical qualitative descriptive approach using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis model. The data consist of linguistic elements, including diction, sentence structures, and modality that construct the discourse of the dispute. The data sources are two local media outlets, Aceh Portal and Sumut Pos, with two purposively selected news articles from each, published during May–June 2025, when the issue reached its peak intensity and public attention. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was conducted through Fairclough’s three dimensions: textual, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice. The findings reveal significant differences in the ideological construction of the dispute between the two media. At the textual level, Aceh Portal tends to frame the dispute as administrative injustice and a struggle to defend historical rights, whereas Sumut Pos represents it as a legitimate and final legal-administrative issue. At the level of discursive practice, these differences are reflected in the selection of perspectives, sources, and patterns of text production. At the sociocultural level, the coverage reflects tensions between state hegemony and regional resistance shaped by historical, political, and economic factors. This study highlights that local media function not merely as channels of information but also as ideological actors in constructing and framing territorial disputes.

Abstract

This This descriptive qualitative study aims to explore the listening difficulties experienced by participants in the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI) in Jambi Province, as well as their learning needs. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 68 participants who had taken the UKBI at the Jambi Provincial Language Canter, with 25 transcripts analysed in depth using a thematic analysis framework. The findings indicate that listening skills represent the primary challenge, involving multidimensional difficulties that encompass cognitive-affective processes (focusing attention and regulating anxiety), stimulus characteristics (audio speed, dialectal diversity, lexical complexity, and recording quality), and participant-contextual factors (language background and test environment conditions). A gap was revealed between the preparation undertaken by participants and their actual needs, with participants recommending the development of a preparation book that includes varied practice questions, detailed explanations, practical and concise materials, strategic tips, as well as digital and audio access. This study contributes to the development of a framework for exploring listening difficulties and provides practical implications for the development of UKBI preparation materials that are more responsive to the needs of participants in regions with high linguistic diversity.
