Abstract

Amid the pressures of globalization and the growing dominance of transnational popular culture in Jakarta, the continuity of local oral traditions has become increasingly contested. This study investigates the existence and social functions of Betawi folklore through an analysis of Sabeni Jawara from Tanah Abang. Employing a qualitative descriptive design grounded in ethnolinguistics and dialogical ethnography, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with Betawi cultural figures, and documentary analysis of folklore texts and related cultural sources. The findings reveal that Betawi folklore remains socially relevant not because it survives solely as an oral narrative, but because it has been institutionalized and recontextualized within contemporary cultural domains, including the Jakarta Local Culture and Environment Education curriculum (PLBJ), Lenong performances, and the Palang Pintu tradition. Functionally, the story of Sabeni Jawara operates as a vehicle for transmitting religious and moral values, fostering character education, and sustaining performative entertainment rooted in Betawi cultural aesthetics. More importantly, the study demonstrates that folklore functions as a dynamic mechanism for reproducing cultural identity, social memory, and collective values within a rapidly changing metropolitan environment. These findings contribute to folklore studies by showing how traditional narratives endure through processes of institutionalization, cultural performance, and identity reproduction, thereby positioning folklore not as a relic of the past but as an adaptive system of local knowledge that supports cultural sustainability in contemporary urban society.

Abstract

This research is important to conduct because (1) "pupuh tembang Sasak" is one of the readings of the congregation of the Sasak tarekat assembly in Lombok; (2) "pupuh tembang Sasak" uses many expressions and teaches Sufism so that it is difficult to understand; (3) the Sasak community tends to learn at the inner level. Because, the use of symbols, metaphors, allegories is dominant. This research aims to explain the types and meanings of the language styles used so that the congregation can understand the meaning contained in "pupuh tembang Sasak". Methodologically, this research uses a hermeneutic approach for data analysis and data collection using library methods. There are several forms of expressions used in pupuh tembang Sasak, namely symbolism, metaphor, and allegory. The use of these three types of expressions is in accordance with the characteristics of the congregation of the tarekat which prioritizes inner experience. Expressions in "pupuh tarekat Sasak" use animal names, regional names, natural names, and names of trees and fruits. The use of these expressions through names carries moral and spiritual meanings, including repentance, asceticism, poverty, patience, gratitude, approval, self-awareness, optimism, fear, and longing. Given this, a figure capable of transmitting the expression "pupuh tarekat Sasak" to the Sasak congregation is needed.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a critical yet frequently underexamined competency among pre-service elementary teachers, whose future role requires them to model and scaffold literacy development for young learners. Despite its importance, comprehensive profiling of reading comprehension across all levels of Barrett’s Taxonomy among first-year students in Indonesian teacher education programs remains limited. This study aimed to analyse the reading comprehension profiles of 158 first-semester students in the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) program using a descriptive survey design. Data were collected through a validated reading comprehension test grounded in Barrett’s Taxonomy, comprising five indicators: literal, reorganisation, inferential, evaluation, and appreciation, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 12 purposively selected students. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed a mean score of 68.58 with a standard deviation of 20.92, placing overall performance in the moderate category. A coefficient of variation of 30.5 per cent indicated considerable within-cohort heterogeneity. Indicator-level analysis showed that literal comprehension was highest (77.85 per cent) and inferential comprehension was lowest (60.60 per cent). These findings reveal a persistent surface-to-depth gradient in reading ability, with students demonstrating competence in basic text retrieval but significant difficulty in higher-order inferential and evaluative thinking. For pre-service teachers, this gap is not merely academic. It directly limits their capacity to foster critical literacy in future classrooms. The study contributes an empirically grounded, indicator-level literacy profile to the limited body of Indonesian PGSD research and calls for targeted, first-year instructional interventions to strengthen higher-order reading comprehension.

Abstract

In the era of modernization and digitalization, Sundanese cultural issues are often regarded as irrelevant in modern intellectual discourse, resulting in the marginalization of Sundanese cultural knowledge by the dominance of technology and globalization. This condition creates additional challenges for younger generations in preserving local culture, which is often treated as a complementary aspect rather than an essential component of cultural education. This study aims to explore and formulate Panca Curiga as a local epistemological system of the Sundanese. It also examines how this concept functions in interpreting Sundanese texts through five interpretative elements: silib, sindir, simbol, siloka, and sasmita. These elements represent different modes of meaning-making in Sundanese tradition, including metaphor, indirect criticism, symbolism, hypothetical expression, and emotional or intuitive signals. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a grounded theory design to construct an interpretative framework derived from Sundanese cultural practices and meanings embedded in Panca Curiga. Grounded theory was selected because this study does not seek to test an existing theory; rather, it aims to develop a conceptual understanding of how meaning is culturally constructed and interpreted within Sundanese tradition. The primary data sources include Sundanese cultural literature, interviews with Sundanese cultural figures, and cultural observations related to Panca Curiga. Data analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to generate categories and relationships that explain meaning-making processes in Sundanese cultural texts. The findings of this study reveal that Panca Curiga is an effective local epistemological system for interpreting multilayered meanings in Sundanese cultural texts. The five elements of Panca Curiga—silib, sindir, simbol, siloka, and sasmita—are shown to form a contextual and cultural reading pattern, unveiling the epistemological, ethical, historical, and spiritual dimensions within Sundanese tradition. This study makes a significant contribution to the fields of semiotics and hermeneutics, particularly within the context of Sundanese culture, by introducing Panca Curiga as a local epistemological framework that goes beyond a mere interpretative tool. The application of Panca Curiga opens space for multilayered interpretative learning, enhancing the understanding of both traditional and contemporary Sundanese texts. Moving forward, this research can serve as a foundation for developing a model of learning based on local cultural approaches.

Abstract

Literature is a product of human thought that originates from individuals and derives from the surrounding social environment. The purpose of this study is to reveal the representation of gender inequality toward female characters in Sasti Gotama's novel Korpus Uterus. The focus of this study lies in three aspects, namely textual analysis, text interpretation, and text explanation. The data source of this study is the novel Corpus Uterus by Sasti Gotama. The data consists of excerpts in the form of phrases, clauses, words, and paragraphs found to be relevant within the novel. The data analysis technique employed in this study is descriptive qualitative analysis. Meanwhile, the data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. This study adopts a qualitative approach. The findings indicate that, at the textual level, the novel employs diction closely associated with the medical field. This is inseparable from the author's professional background as a physician. In addition, the use of such objects is related to trauma, marginalization, and subordination, all of which signify forms of gender inequality. In terms of text production, the author utilizes her knowledge and professional background to deconstruct narratives of injustice that have long constrained women. Through this strategy, the author encourages readers not only to empathize with the characters' trauma but also to think critically about the experiences that surround them. Furthermore, the explanatory dimension of the text reflects the reality in Indonesia, where gender inequality experienced by women through patriarchal hegemony remains deeply entrenched and persistent.

Abstract

Academic writing is a critical competency in higher education, yet many university students struggle to produce coherent and academically rigorous written work. This challenge is particularly pronounced in Indonesian higher education, where metacognitive writing strategy instruction remains empirically underexplored. This study aimed to analyze the use of metacognitive strategies among university students and examine their relationship with academic writing effectiveness in the Indonesian Language General Compulsory Course (MKWK Bahasa Indonesia) at Tanjungpura University (UNTAN), Indonesia. Deploying a quantitative survey design, data were gathered from a heterogeneous sample of undergraduate students across multiple faculties, including Law, Early Childhood Teacher Education (PAUD), Guidance and Counseling (BK), and Agriculture. Metacognitive strategies were operationalized through planning, monitoring, and evaluation components, while writing effectiveness was measured across five dimensions: structure, coherence, language accuracy, argumentative strength, and reference completeness. Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistics via Spearman's rank correlation. Results indicated that students'reported metacognitive strategy usage was at a moderate level, with mean scores surpassing the theoretical midpoint. A significant and strong positive correlation was found between metacognitive strategy use and self-perceived academic writing effectiveness (r= 0.7551, p< 0.000001). Descriptively, planning and monitoring dimensions displayed a stronger association with writing quality compared to the evaluation phase. The simple linear regression model revealed that metacognitive strategies shared 61.79% of the variance with perceived writing effectiveness, leaving the remaining variance linked to unmeasured individual and environmental factors. These findings suggest that the strategic integration of metacognitive scaffolding into writing curricula is highly relevant for fostering scholarly writing competence within linguistically and academically diverse higher education contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the construction of gender-based violence in the SLC texts. Gender denotes social roles (not founded on biological or physiological differences) of women and men as perceived by persons or collectives within a given society. The SLC, being a realization of linguistic experience, serves to actualize social roles deemed suitable or unsuitable for women and men. This study concentrates on: 1) The building of gender-based violence derived from the systems of transitivity, modality, and social context in SLC, and (2) The development of precautionary strategies against gender-based violence in SLC. This research utilizes Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, concentrating on Halliday’s systems of transitivity, modality, and social context. The methodology used is descriptive qualitative. The data and their sources comprise conversational texts in the SLC collected from public spaces in Mataram City. Data gathering was performed via observation and note-taking, employing non-participant observation and transcription techniques. The tools and analytic procedures are grounded in Halliday’s systemic functional perspective. The results reveal that gender-based violence in the SLC, based on the transitivity system, originates from verbal processes (psychological and physical consequences); based on the modality system, it emerges from a high likelihood or assuredness of action; and based on the social context, it proceeds from patterns of speech participants and discourse devices. The outcomes of this research offer thorough details concerning attempts to prevent gender-based violence in the SLC among the Sasak ethnic community of Lombok Island.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the representation of emotional intelligence in a bilingual Indonesian–Jambi Malay children’s story and its implications for multiliteracy learning for beginning readers. The object of this research is a children's storybook titled Batu Tuo Si Fosil Kayu by Eko Wahyudi. The research data consists of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, narratives, and illustrations. The data source is a bilingual Indonesian–Jambi Malay children's storybook titled Batu Tuo Si Fosil Kayu by Eko Wahyudi, published by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in 2024. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were analyzed using the five components of emotional intelligence, as described by to Daniel Goleman’s theory. The research instrument was the researcher, with data analysis techniques including data classification, analysis, and interpretation, as well as the design of teaching materials for literacy learning. The results indicate that all indicators of emotional intelligence—namely self-awareness, emotional regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—are present in the analyzed children’s story. The most dominant indicators are empathy and social skills, reflected through character interactions. Furthermore, this bilingual children’s story features a simple plot, communicative language, and contextual illustrations, making it suitable for beginning readers. Therefore, a bilingual Indonesian–Jambi Malay children’s story has the potential to serve as an alternative, multiliteracies-based instructional material to strengthen the emotional intelligence of beginning readers.

Abstract

Makassar oral literature faces serious challenges in the digital era due to globalisation, the dominance of popular culture, and the declining interest of younger generations in local languages and traditions. This condition highlights the need for learning innovation that is oriented not only toward preservation but also toward cultural revitalisation through approaches relevant to technological development. This study aims to formulate a redesign of local literature learning based on artificial intelligence as a strategy to strengthen local cultural literacy and support the sustainability of Makassar’s intangible cultural heritage. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through literature review, learning model development, and classroom observations involving students enrolled in an oral literature course in the Department of Regional Literature at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The participants were selected purposively based on their involvement in oral literature learning and their exposure to educational technology. Observations focused on students’ learning practices, their use of digital tools, and the pedagogical challenges encountered in learning Makassar oral literature. The data were analyzed through qualitative descriptive procedures, including data reduction, thematic categorization, interpretation, and the formulation of a proposed learning model. The results of the analysis led to the development of the AI-Enhanced Cultural Immersion model, which positions artificial intelligence as a pedagogical support system rather than as a substitute for cultural transmission. In this model, generative artificial intelligence is proposed to support the visual reconstruction of literary narratives, while natural language processing is used to facilitate dialogic and interactive engagement with oral traditions. Since this study does not involve empirical implementation or experimental testing of the model, the findings are presented as a conceptual and pedagogical proposal. The study concludes that the integration of artificial intelligence has the potential to support local cultural literacy and contribute to the revitalisation of Makassar oral literature in the digital era.
