Abstract

This study explores the role of family support in shaping an individual's identity and how such support influences personal success, as depicted in the film The Blind Side (2009). It focuses on how the emotional, social, and material support provided by the Tuohy family positively impacted Michael Oher’s psychological development, self-confidence, and academic achievement. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed data in the form of dialogues, scenes, and storylines relevant to the research focus. Data collection involved repeatedly watching the film and noting significant scenes or dialogues, which were then analyzed using the Miles Huberman (1994) qualitative data analysis model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. The results indicate that consistent family support was crucial in shaping Michael Oher’s identity, self-confidence, and motivation. The emotional warmth, acceptance, and structured guidance from the Tuohy family enabled Michael to overcome past trauma and social barriers, enhancing his academic performance, athletic abilities, and self-confidence. This research contributes by demonstrating how media portrayals, such as The Blind Side, can provide insights into the psychological and social dynamics of identity formation, offering valuable perspectives for educators, counselors, and researchers studying the impact of family support on adolescent development.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) model on Grade 10 students’ chemical literacy in Green Chemistry topics using a quantitative experimental approach with an intact group comparison design. Two pre-existing classes were assigned as an experimental group taught using POGIL and a control group taught using Direct Instruction, with posttest-only assessment. The sample consisted of 59 Grade 10 students selected through purposive sampling (30 experimental, 29 control). A PISA-style chemical literacy test measuring content, context, and competency dimensions was used as the research instrument. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, tests of normality and homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that students taught using POGIL achieved a higher mean chemical literacy score (81.1) than those taught using Direct Instruction (70.1), with the difference being statistically significant (p 0.05). These findings demonstrate that the POGIL model has a positive effect on students’ chemical literacy in Green Chemistry contexts and supports its application as a literacy- and sustainability-oriented instructional approach.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there was an effect of sensory play classes on the emotional regulation of children aged 4–5 years. This study was a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental approach (quasi-experimental research) that aimed to determine the effect of sensory play classes on the emotional regulation of children aged 4–5 years. This study used a non-equivalent control group design, in which there were two groups, namely the experimental group (taking sensory play classes) and the control group (taking regular learning). The results of the study showed that based on the pretest and posttest data, as well as the statistical tests that had been carried out, it can be concluded that after the treatment in the form of sensory play classes was given to the experimental group for eight meetings, there was a significant increase in emotional regulation scores. The posttest results showed a fairly large difference in scores between the experimental group (average = 65.89) and the control group (average = 50.13), with significant t-test results (p = 0.000 0.05). The normality and homogeneity tests indicated that the data from both groups met the requirements of the parametric test, with normal data distribution and homogeneous variance. Thus, it can be concluded that sensory play classes have a significant influence on improving emotional regulation in children aged 4–5 years. Children become more able to recognize, control, and express their emotions in a more positive way after participating in sensory play sessions.

Abstract

Low motivation to learn mathematics is still a global challenge in modern education, although various pedagogical innovations have been developed to address it. One of the approaches that is now widely used is gamification, which is the application of game elements in the context of non-game learning to increase student engagement and motivation. This study aims to systematically examine how gamification is implemented in mathematics learning and evaluate its impact on students' learning motivation based on the results of international research published between 2010 and 2022. The study used a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design with PRISMA guidance and the PICOC approach, searching articles from the Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Taylor Francis, and ERIC databases. A total of 30 articles met the inclusion criteria after going through the identification, screening, and eligibility stages. The results of the synthesis showed that gamification consistently increased students' intrinsic motivation, engagement, and perseverance in learning mathematics with moderate to high effects. Elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges have been proven to strengthen students' sense of competence and autonomy, in accordance with the principles of Self-Determination Theory. However, its effectiveness is influenced by the game design, duration of the intervention, level of education, and cultural context. In conclusion, gamification has the potential to be an effective pedagogical strategy to increase motivation to learn mathematics, with practical implications for teachers, media developers, and education policies in creating a more engaging and meaningful learning environment.

Abstract

This research is planned to examine one of the development instruments used by Islamic economics, namely Islamic social financial institutions/philanthropy, namely OPZ, which is part of Islamic Social Finance. Historical evidence speaks to zakat as an important development instrument for the country. Zakat and the SDGs have significant relevance. This is because zakat is an instrument of Islamic economic development that places maqasid sharia as its implementation goal. Therefore, optimization of zakat on the most optimal SDGs indicators needs to be determined. The method in this research uses a type of qualitative analysis to determine which SDGs indicators need to be prioritized and supported by the Islamic Social Finance program in North Sumatra. The results obtained from the study indicate that the achievement of SDGs, especially in the aspect of sustainable economic empowerment in 2030, is not a utopian thing if there is synergy between all stakeholders for a better Indonesia. Based on the results of research conducted by Islamic financial institutions, Islam is quite good and certainly needs to be appreciated and supported by various parties, especially the role of the government in terms of regulation, protection, and institutional guarantees. Public awareness of the virtues of almsgiving, charity, waqf, and the obligation to pay zakat (alms) should be continuously nurtured and increased. Other Islamic financial institutions with similar visions and missions should continually evaluate their management and distribution to ensure they are targeted, effective, and sustainable.
