Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of neem leaf extract (Azadirachta indica) on parasitemia of rats infected with Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) Aceh local isolate. A total of 24 male rats aged three months were used in this study and randomly divided into six treatment groups equally. The negative control group (K0) without T. evansi infection and neem leaf extract, the positive control group (K1) was infected with T. evansi but no neem leaf extract given, group K2, K3, K4, and K5 were infected with 5x104 T. evansi and were given neem leaf extract after patent infection with dose of 50, 100, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW respectively. The extract was given orally for three consecutive days. On the fourth day, rat blood was drawn for parasitemia examination. The results showed that no T. evansi detected in rats in negative control group (K0), while parasitemia in group K1; K2; K3; K4; and K5 was 12,295 x106/mL; 10,495 x106/mL; 9,360 x106/mL; 5,080x106/mL; and 2,398x106/mL of blood, respectively. Percentage of inhibition of parasitemia in K2, K3, K4, and K5 reached 14.64, 23.78, 58.68, and 80.50%, respectively. Based on the result of the study, neem leaf extract of 800 mg/kg BW gave the highest reduction of parasitemia in rats infected with T. evansi.

Abstract

Male infertility has occurred rapidly in the last few decades, primarily in developing countries. An antioxidant, hesperetin is a flavonoid that is found in abundance in orange peels. The aims of this research were to determine the effect of hesperetin on blood sugar levels, spermatozoaquality, and spermatozoa quantity. The research structure included induction of diabetes mellitus and treatment for 8 weeks, followed bydetermination of blood sugar levels, spermatozoa quality, and spermatozoa quantity. Hesperetin has the ability to restore blood sugar levels, spermatozoa quantity, seminiferous tubules diameter, and testicular weight, volume, and germinal epithelial layer thickness with significant difference from the normal control group. Hesperetin did not fully restore spermatozoa motility, viability, and morphology with significant difference from the normal control group, nor from the positive control group. However, overall, hesperetin decreased blood glucose levels, increased spermatozoa quantity, and improved the spermatozoa quality in alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus mice. Dose-dependent activity was observed with the optimum dose at 200 mg/kg body weight.

Abstract

AbstractThe use of vaginal sponge in estrous synchronization has been a popular method to uniform estrous cycle of small ruminants. In order to increase the litter size, the use of the sponge is combined with PMSG. Therefore the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of PMSG in combination with vaginal sponge on estrous response and litter size of Javanese local sheep. The study was conducted in Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Padjadjaran University, Indonesia with 32 non-pregnant local sheep. All these sheep was divided into four groups of treatment, i.e: 1) group of sheep was subjected to vaginal sponge (VS) treatment containing 30 mg Medroxyprogesterone acetat (MAP) inserted in the vagina for 14 days; 2) group of sheep was subjected to the 30 mg MAP in VS plus 300 IU PMSG injection -1 d before VS removal; 3) group of sheep was subjected to the 30 mg MAP in VS plus 300 IU PMSG injection at the day of VS removal; 4) group of sheep was subjected to the 30 mg MAP in VS plus 300 IU PMSG injection +1 d after VS removal. The result showed that all treatment groups had 100% of estrous response. However, the occurrence of estrous time varied among group after VS removal. Group 1 (G1) and G4 tend to have estrous occurrence at day 3 after VS removal by 55% and 75% response, respectively. Whilst, G2 and G3 tend to have estrous occurrence respectively at day 1 (62,5%) and day 2 (50%) after VS removal. A 100% of pregnancy rate occurs in G2 and G4, while G1 and G3 have a 88,9% and 87,5%, respectively. No significant effects of the treatments on the ewes litter size. In conclusion, the use of PMSG administration 24 h prior, after, or at sponge withdrawal increase a tighter synchrony of oestrous and pregnancy rate, but has no effect on the increasing of litter size in Javanese local sheep. Keywords: Vaginal sponge, PMSG, estrous response, pregnancy rate, litter size, sheep

Abstract

Orangutan is a great ape that has anatomical and physiological aspects similar to those of gorillas and chimpanzees, although orangutan is more arboreal than other great apes. This research aims to study the morphofunctional characteristics of the lower hindlimb and foot muscles of Bornean orangutan and its relation to the type of locomotion and daily behavior. This research was conducted on the right leg of a male orangutan by observing the morphology of the lower hindlimb and foot muscles and observing the behavior of the Bornean orangutan through video observations. The results showed that digital flexor muscles are more developed than plantar flexor muscles as an adaptation towards arboreal activities that require finger flexor movements such as gripping tree branches. Orangutans have rudimentary hallux, which is related by the less developed intrinsic muscle and indicated by the way orangutan grips tree branches dominantly using digits II-V. At a certain time, male Bornean orangutans are active on terrestrial that causes the digital extensor muscles to have more developed as an adaptation to terrestrial activity. It can be concluded the morphology of the lower hindlimb and foot muscles is in accordance to its function and behavior adaptation in arboreal and terrestrial.
