Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus remains a major global health problem that requires effective self-management to prevent complications. Poor blood glucose management behavior, unhealthy dietary patterns, and inadequate stress management may worsen patients’ conditions. Educational interventions using audiovisual media, such as animated videos, have the potential to improve patients’ understanding and self-management behavior.Aims: This study evaluated the effectiveness of animated video-based education in improving diabetes self-management among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with intervention and control groups. A total of 200 participants were included, consisting of 100 participants in the intervention group and 100 participants in the control group. The intervention group received a 60-minute animated video-based education session, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected before and after the intervention using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and Cohen’s d.Results: The results showed significant improvements in the intervention group in blood glucose management behavior (p<0.001; Cohen’s d=2.741), dietary patterns (p<0.001; Cohen’s d=3.506), and stress management (p<0.001; Cohen’s d=3.420). Independent t-test analysis also demonstrated significant differences in score changes between the intervention and control groups across all study variables (p<0.001), with very large effect sizes. Conclusion: Animated video-based education was effective in improving blood glucose management behavior, dietary patterns, and stress management among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Background: Community-based preventive screening is important for reducing non-communicable disease risk among adult women, particularly those who influence household health practices. However, screening activities frequently emphasize Body Mass Index (BMI), although BMI alone may not adequately describe central adiposity, elevated blood pressure, and functional health indicators. This community service article aimed to describe the implementation of health education and integrated screening involving anthropometric, physiological, and functional measurements among female guardians at Yayasan Tarbiyatul Yatim, East Jakarta, Indonesia.Aims: This study aimed to (1) implement a community-based health education and screening program for adult female participants, (2) assess anthropometric, physiological, and functional health indicators including blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference, and hand grip strength, and (3) identify the prevalence of potential cardiometabolic and functional risk markers beyond BMI.Methods: This activity was implemented on January 8, 2026 using a preventive-promotive community service framework with descriptive program evaluation. Thirty-two adult female participants joined health education, screening, and individual consultation. The community service dataset included blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, body temperature, body weight, height, BMI, waist circumference, hand grip strength, health history, lifestyle profile, and current complaints. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency, percentage, mean, median, standard deviation, and range.Result: The participants had a mean age of 49.8 years. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 129.2 mmHg and 78.8 mmHg, respectively. Mean BMI was 24.9 kg/m²; 16/32 participants (50.0%) were categorized as normal, 9/32 (28.1%) overweight, 4/32 (12.5%) obese, and 3/32 (9.4%) underweight. Mean waist circumference was 97.7 cm, and 29/32 participants (90.6%) had waist circumference >80 cm. Mean hand grip strength was 16.5 kg, and 21/32 participants (65.6%) had values <18 kg.Conclusion: Integrated screening beyond BMI is feasible in community service settings and can help identify potential cardiometabolic and functional risk indicators that require counseling or referral. Future activities should include documented repeat measurements for abnormal findings, structured pretest-posttest educational evaluation, biochemical testing, and referral follow-up.

Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer patients frequently experience psychosocial challenges that are influenced by sociocultural beliefs regarding illness and treatment.Aims: This study examined the association between cultural beliefs and psychosocial responses among cervical cancer patients. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2024 among 61 cervical cancer patients receiving treatment at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted using structured questionnaires designed to obtain participants' demographic characteristics, cultural beliefs, and psychosocial responses. Descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation analysis were performed to examine the relationship between cultural beliefs and psychosocial responses. Results: The mean cultural beliefs score was 1.11 (SD = 0.18), while the mean psychosocial response score was 1.39 (SD = 0.32). Spearman's rank correlation analysis identified a moderate, statistically significant positive association between cultural beliefs and psychosocial responses (r = 0.525, p < .001).Conclusion: Cultural beliefs were significantly associated with psychosocial responses among cervical cancer patients. Sociocultural considerations should be integrated into culturally responsive psychosocial support, nursing care, and community-based cervical cancer support initiatives.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, as it increases the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Family support plays an important role in improving maternal nutritional practices. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based nutritional assistance model in improving the nutritional status of pregnant women with Chronic Energy Deficiency and reducing the risk of low birth weight. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest design was conducted among pregnant women with CED in Karangtengah Village. The intervention included nutrition education, family empowerment, home visits, nutritional monitoring, counseling, and the provision of a supplementary meal guidebook based on locally available foods. Outcomes were assessed through changes in knowledge, attitudes, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC), and body weight before and after one month of intervention. Result:s The proportion of participants with good nutritional knowledge increased from 20% to 80%, while positive attitudes toward maternal nutrition increased from 40% to 90%. Mean MUAC improved from 22.40 ± 0.83 cm to 23.05 ± 0.79 cm, and mean body weight increased from 48.20 ± 3.52 kg to 49.35 ± 3.47 kg after one month of assistance. All participants received and utilized the supplementary meal guidebook to support healthy dietary practices during pregnancy. Conclusion: The family-based nutritional assistance program improved knowledge, attitudes, and nutritional status among pregnant women with CED. The involvement of family members, midwives, and nutrition cadres, combined with practical dietary guidance, supports the feasibility of this community-based approach to improving maternal nutrition during pregnancy.
