Abstract

This systematic review examines the multifaceted role of exit exams in higher education, emphasizing their purposes, impacts, and implications for students and educational institutions. Analyzing a diverse range of studies from 2000 to 2024, the review reveals that exit exams serve both as tools for accountability and potential sources of inequity. While these assessments can enhance educational quality and student preparedness, they may disproportionately affect underrepresented students, leading to increased stress and anxiety. The findings indicate that the pressure associated with exit exams can negatively impact student well-being, particularly for those who do not pass. Additionally, the review discusses the importance of aligning exit exams with curricular goals to ensure relevance and effectiveness. The necessity for inclusive assessment practices is highlighted, alongside robust support systems to aid all students in navigating these challenges. Recommendations include fostering collaboration among faculty, ongoing research into the effectiveness of exit exams, and advocating for equitable assessment policies. Ultimately, the review underscores the need for continuous dialogue on the role of exit exams to ensure they fulfill their intended purposes while promoting educational equity.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate whether the KWL (Know, Want to Know, and Learned) strategy was effective in improving the eighth-grade students’ reading ability in recount texts. This study used a quasi-experimental research design. The population in this study consisted of all eighth graders at one of the junior high schools in Malang, whereas the sample consisted of two classes chosen. The control group consisted of 32 students, while the experimental group consisted of 34 students.  The data were collected using a pretest and a post-test and analyzed using SPSS software. The results of the test showed that the post-test mean of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. Moreover, the data were homogeneous and normal, so they can be tested using a t-test. An independent sample test was then used to find the significant difference in post-test scores between the experimental and control groups. The result of the t-test was 0.039, which was smaller than the alpha (α) score, < 0.05. It meant that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. In conclusion, the KWL strategy was effective in improving the students’ reading ability in recounting text for the eighth-grade students.

Abstract

This research paper presents a comprehensive review of the impacts of various teaching methods on student engagement in Tanzanian secondary schools, while addressing the contextual challenges of the country’s educational system. Tanzanian schools continue to face persistent barriers such as large class sizes, limited instructional resources, and diverse socio-cultural factors that influence teaching and learning. To investigate these dynamics, the study employed a systematic literature review with qualitative insights gathered from 15 Tanzanian educators. Data collection instruments included semi-structured interviews, classroom observation checklists, and document analysis to ensure both depth and triangulation of findings. The results demonstrate that learner-centered methods, particularly inquiry-based and cooperative learning strategies, improve student engagement by approximately 20–30% compared to traditional lecture-based approaches. Furthermore, the integration of culturally responsive pedagogies and technology-enhanced instruction shows significant potential, although these approaches remain constrained by financial and infrastructural limitations. Based on the evidence, the paper recommends targeted teacher training programs, curriculum reforms that embed participatory methods and scalable, low-cost interventions that align with the Tanzanian context.

Abstract

This study describes basic teaching skills in microteaching to enhance graduate students’ competencies as prospective teachers through a library research approach. The finding shows that basic skills for microteaching are skills to open and close learning, skills of explanation, asking/questioning skills, skills in using variations, skills to provide reinforcement, small group and individual teaching skills, class management skills, and skills in guiding small group discussions. Microteaching is a teaching practice model conducted on a limited scale to develop essential teaching skills. The limitations include specific competencies, subject matter, time, number of students, and targeted skills. Typically lasting 10–40 minutes with 1–10 students, microteaching consists of three main stages: Preparation, Implementation, and Feedback. In the Preparation Stage, teachers design a learning activity plan according to the allotted time, organize student numbers, prepare teaching materials, and arrange instructional media. During the Implementation Stage, prospective teachers deliver content clearly, use appropriate language, manage the classroom effectively, provide exercises, and evaluate learning outcomes. The Feedback Stage involves receiving input from observers or peers through discussion or Q&A, helping participants identify areas for improvement. Microteaching trains fundamental teaching skills such as opening and closing lessons, explaining concepts, questioning techniques, using variations, giving reinforcement, managing classrooms, teaching individuals and small groups, and guiding discussions.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of the Picture and Picture model in teaching procedure texts in class XI at MA Ibnu Sina. This model uses pictures to help students understand the sequence of steps in procedure texts. The research used qualitative thematic analysis with observation and documentation. The results showed that the model effectively improved students' understanding, although challenges related to unfamiliar vocabulary arose. The steps of implementation and challenges, as well as solutions, were described in this research. In the second meeting, a special glossary helped students overcome these difficulties. In conclusion, the Picture and Picture model can enhance student engagement, critical thinking skills, and teamwork in learning procedure texts.

Abstract

Reading literacy, as a cornerstone of intellectual and communicative development, plays a crucial role in shaping students’ ability to express ideas effectively and confidently in public contexts. This study explores how reading literacy strategies contribute to the enhancement of students’ public speaking skills at SMK Miftahul Qulub. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were obtained through observations, interviews, and documentation of literacy and speaking activities. The findings indicate that the integration of reading, discussion, and structured speech preparation enables students to build critical thinking, expand vocabulary, and improve coherence in speech delivery. Reading literacy also strengthens students’ confidence and self-expression, allowing them to articulate ideas with greater fluency and reflective depth. The study concludes that literacy serves as both a cognitive and affective foundation for public speaking, supporting the development of communicative competence and creative expression. Therefore, schools are encouraged to embed literacy-based practices within language learning programs to foster students’ holistic personal and academic growth.

Abstract

The development of digital technology is the result of engineering human reason, mind, and intelligence, which describes the progress of science and provides benefits in various aspects of human life. The research methods used were the ADDIE model. The ADDIE model is a methodically constructed learning design with certain stages in an effort to overcome learning problems and create reliable results. The results obtained were in the form of validity test results from several media, IT, material, and individual experts. The validity test results stated that animation-based YouTube video media was worth using. This YouTube video media could be used as a learning medium for grade VII students, creating a conducive learning atmosphere and motivate student learning.

Abstract

The problem being analyzed during this research is dissimilarity in the effective reading ability between one student and others and the factors that affect the effective reading speed. The method used was a case study method combined with a quantitative methodology. Twenty-seven students were involved as the research subjects. The data were obtained from observation text entitled "D'topeng Museum Angkut" read by the students. The process of calculating reading time was calculated independently by the students using a stopwatch. The results showed that (1) the average reading speed of the students was in the moderate or sufficient speed category; (2) the reading speed per student was in the adequate category (250 – 350 wpm). Even three students were in the effective category (above 350 wpm); and (3) concentration was one of the factors that influenced the effective reading speed. It can be concluded that in the analysis of the effective reading speed in class XI IPS 1 at SMAN 1 MOJO, the students had a moderate or adequate reading speed.
