Abstract

Introduction: The WHO recommends implementing feeding rules early in life to prevent child malnutrition. Providing good complementary foods requires attention to timeliness, adequate nutrition, safety and responsive delivery. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the application of complementary feeding guidelines and the nutritional status of children under 2 years of age in Kelurahan Jagir Surabaya. Methods: An observational-analytic, cross-sectional study was conducted in 15 Integrated Health Service Post. 91 Mothers and children aged 6-24 months were selected using a purposive sampling method. The research instrument used anthropometric measurement data and questionnaires. This study analyzed the data using Spearman's rho correlation test (p < 0.05). Results: Spearman's rho analysis showed a relationship between the application of complementary feeding rules and the nutritional status indices BB/U and BB/PB (p < 0,001). However, there was no relationship between the application of complementary feeding rules and the nutritional status of the TB/U index (p = 0.307). The application of complementary feeding rules is associated with weight-for-age and weight-for-height status, but not with height-for-age, which reflects chronic malnutrition. Conclusion: These findings emphasize that the application of Basic Feeding Rules contributes to better weight gain in infants and young children, reinforcing the importance of pediatricians and health workers in complementary feeding education and counselling as a promotive and preventive measure in pediatrics. Thus, education and guidance for parents and health workers to improve complementary feeding practices are paramount to support improvements in children's nutritional status.

Abstract

Introduction: Mechanical asphyxia due to smothering is difficult to diagnose forensically because it often leaves no distinctive signs. Unlike strangulation or hanging, smothering using soft materials generally leaves no external traces, making the mechanism of death difficult to identify. Furthermore, epidemiological data on cerebral vascular rupture due to asphyxia are still limited. This case report aims to add to the forensic literature on variations in asphyxial deaths and strengthen the diagnosis of the cause of sudden death. Case Illustration: A 46-year-old woman was found in a supine position. External examination revealed bruising on the bridge of the nose, philtrum, lower lip, left shoulder blade, inner left upper arm, outer right thigh, and abrasions on the upper lip and left side of the neck caused by blunt force. Internal examination revealed two blood seepage sites in the neck muscles, an enlarged heart, dilated cerebral and cerebellar vessels, and haemorrhage in the posterior brainstem. Discussion: Autopsy findings indicated rupture of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA), suspected to be triggered by asphyxia. Asphyxia does not always cause death through direct hypoxia, but also through increased intracranial pressure that triggers cerebral blood vessel rupture. This mechanism can be caused by airway obstruction or cerebral venous occlusion. Conclusion: AICA rupture due to asphyxia is a rare phenomenon. Mechanical asphyxia due to smothering requires attention because it can cause hypoxia, decreased consciousness, and even death. This report serves as an important forensic reference in the diagnosis of sudden death due to asphyxia.

Abstract

Introduction: Orthosiphon stamineus (cat’s whiskers) is a traditional medicinal plant rich in bioactive compounds and has potential as a natural antioxidant. However, comprehensive studies linking its phytochemical composition with antioxidant activity and toxicity remain limited. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical profile, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and toxicity of O. stamineus leaf extract. Methods: The study was conducted experimentally using in vitro and bioassay approaches. Phytochemical screening was performed to identify secondary metabolites. Total phenolic content was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method with gallic acid as the standard. Antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, while toxicity was evaluated using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). Results: The results showed that the extract contained various secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins, phenolics, terpenoids, steroids, glycosides, quinones, anthocyanins, and cardiac glycosides. The total phenolic content was 43.02 mg GAE/g DW. The IC₅₀ values for DPPH and ABTS were 116.29 µg/mL and 123.22 µg/mL, respectively, indicating moderate antioxidant activity. The FRAP value was 337.9 µmol/L. Toxicity testing yielded an LC₅₀ value of 653.6 µg/mL, indicating low toxicity. Conclusion: O. stamineus leaf extract shows potential as a natural antioxidant source with low toxicity, supporting its prospective application in pharmaceutical and health-related fields.

Abstract

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that causes various infections and has demonstrated increasing resistance to antibiotics, highlighting the need for alternative antibacterial agents from natural sources. The pseudostem of Musa paradisiaca var. balbisiana Colla contains flavonoids, tannins, and saponins with potential antibacterial properties. Studies evaluating the dose–response relationship of extracts from specific local sources remain limited. This study aimed to determine the effect of different concentrations of ethanolic extract of the pseudostem on the inhibition zone diameter of S. aureus. Methods: The ethanolic extract was tested at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50% using the disk diffusion method. Vancomycin was used as the positive control and sterile distilled water as the negative control. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with a significance level of p < 0.05, followed by a post hoc Duncan’s test. Results: The mean inhibition zone diameters were 7.48 mm, 9.18 mm, 10.12 mm, and 10.88 mm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among all concentrations tested. Conclusion: The extract exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial activity and shows potential as a natural antibacterial candidate, providing novelty through dose–response analysis and supporting further research development.

Abstract

Background:  Signal peptide-CUB-EGF domain-containing protein-1 (SCUBE1) is a platelet–endothelial glycoprotein implicated in thrombosis and vascular inflammation, and has been detected within atherosclerotic lesions. Whether vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) upregulate SCUBE1 under inflammatory stimuli remains unclear. Objective:  To quantify SCUBE1 mRNA expression in rat aortic VSMCs following lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure in an organ-culture model of atherogenesis. Methods: This study aimed to analyze SCUBE1 expression in aortic VSMCs in atherosclerosis using real-time PCR. This study was a true experimental-post test control group design using organ culture. The aorta from six wistar rats were divided into two groups, consisting of five samples that were not induced with LPS and five samples exposed to LPS at a concentration of 10 µg/mL for 48 hours. Expression of the SCUBE1 gene was then analyzed using real-time PCR. The data was then processed using the dependent T-Test. Results: The result showed LPS increased SCUBE1 transcript levels compared with control (mean ± SD: 0.78 ± 0.22 vs 0.44 ± 0.35), representing a non-significant trend toward induction (p=0.07). These preliminary data are consistent with SCUBE1’s inducibility in inflammatory states and its presence in atherosclerotic tissue. Conclusion: This study revealed increased SCUBE1 gene expression in aortic VSMCs in the LPS-treated group. These data suggest that SCUBE1 has the potential to be a marker of endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Introduction: One of the common psychological disorders experienced by workers that can affect both health and performance is anxiety. Research has shown that anxiety is connected to higher levels of work fatigue. Among industrial workers, one of the major risk factors for occupational accidents is work fatigue. Purpose: This study aims to measure not only the levels of anxiety but also work fatigue, as well as analyze the correlation between anxiety and work fatigue among employees of company X. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional design with a total of 137 employees of company X as participants. Consecutive sampling was used as a sampling technique, and data were obtained through the use of questionnaires from September 2024 - October 2025. Both univariate and bivariate analysis (Chi-square test) were used to examine the data. Results: The finding showed that prevalence of anxiety was 40.15% and work fatigue was 37.23%, and there was a significant correlation between anxiety and work fatigue (p < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, there is a significant association between anxiety and work fatigue among employees of company X. Future research may employ a longitudinal design to determine causal relationships, and include workers from various industrial sectors. The findings may benefit companies and policymakers in understanding the influence of mental health factors on work fatigue. Previous studies have largely focused on online motorcycle taxi drivers and healthcare workers, while studies involving company employees remain limited.

Abstract

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by social-communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Despite these challenges, some individuals with ASD demonstrate exceptional abilities in one or more area, which is known as Savant. Until now, factors linked to savant abilities are still poorly understood. This research compared cognitive, social, and behavioral functioning between savant and non-savant individuals diagnosed with ASD. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted to identify studies comparing cognitive, social, or behavioral characteristics between the two groups. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the quantitative synthesis. Statistical analyses were performed using R software. Results: Savant individuals with ASD showed significantly higher cognitive functioning than non-savant peers (SMD = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.59–0.87). Social functioning differences were negligible and non-significant (SMD = −0.03, 95% CI: −0.22–0.16). Behavioral traits, including repetitive behaviors, were slightly more pronounced among savants but were not statistically significant (SMD = 0.17, 95% CI: −0.07–0.40). Conclusions: Savants with ASD exhibit higher cognitive functioning but do not show significant differences in social or behavioral functioning compared to their non-savant peers, highlighting that enhanced abilities are not necessarily accompanied by corresponding deficits.
