Abstract

Probiotics are beneficial microbes in living things that are useful for improving the balance of microbes in the digestive tract and have a positive influence on the physiology and healthiness of the host. This study aimed to obtain bacterial isolates that could be used as probiotics from striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) and to characterize it macroscopically, microscopically, and biochemically. Isolation of probiotic bacteria was carried out using the spread plate method. The medium used to isolate probiotic bacteria was MRSA (De Man Rogose Sharpe Agar) medium. The probiotic test was carried out by hydrolysis of starch and casein. The diversity of bacterial morphology was observed based on macroscopic, microscopic, and biochemical tests. A total of 2 probiotic bacteria (PIB 1 and PIB 2) were obtained. The characterization results showed that the two probiotic bacteria belonged to the Gram-positive bacteria, in the form of bacilli which had different colony morphology. The results of morphological and biochemical tests indicated that one bacterial isolate belonged to the genus Bacillus (PIB 1) and the other isolate belonged to the genus Lactobacillus (PIB 2).

Abstract

Coffea canephora or robusta coffee was known as a medicinal plant that admitted various biological properties. However, its application as a medicinal plant in fish disease treatment has not been reported. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary robusta coffee leaf (RCL) extract on the survival rate and hematology of Cyprinus carpio infected by Aeromonas hydrophila. Two hundred fish were randomly divided into five treatment groups consisting of uninfected fish (UF), infected fish (IF), and a diet supplemented with different concentrations of RCL extract (30%, 40%, and 50%). The negative control group was injected by NaCl 0.9% and other treatment groups were injected by A. hydrophila. Feeding treatment was carried out for 7 days after clinical symptoms appeared. The results showed that RCL extract increases the survival rate and hematological parameters (number of erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and lymphocytes) significantly (P0.05). The highest survival rate (100%) was recorded in groups that accepted 50% of RCL extract. This current study indicates that RCL extract could be considered a potent medicinal plant for treating fish disease caused by A. hydrophila at the optimum dose of 50%.Keywords:AeromonasCoffea canephoraExtractHematologyCyprinus carpio

Abstract

Anthropogenic activities that tend to be exploitative in the mangrove ecosystem of Belawan are thought to have an impact on the biota associated with the ecosystem. One of the impacts is thought to be implied by mantis shrimp Cloridopsis scorpio (Latreile, 1828). The reproductive biology of the shrimp is the main object that needs to be studied in relation to the impacts. This study aims to determine the distribution of gonad maturity stage, gonad somatic index, and the length of the first mature of C. scorpio in the Mangrove Ecosystem of Belawan, North Sumatera. The research was conducted on March to May 2019 with a biweekly sampling period. The purposive random sampling was applied to choose three sampling stations in the research location. Mantis shrimp samples were caught using shrimp trawl. The result showed that the gonad maturity stage of males and females were dominated by Stage I. The gonad somatic index (GSI) range of males were 7.00-10.93 and female were 7.40-11.15. The GSI value of C. scorpio is closely related to its gonad maturity development. The length of the first mature (L50) of males were 205.50±10.65 mmBL and females were 186.0±10.48 mmBL.Keywords: Cloridopsis scorpio, Gonad maturity stage, Gonad somatic indeks, Length of the first mature ABSTRAKAktivitas antropogenik yang cenderung eksploitatif di kawasan ekosistem mangrove Belawan diduga telah berdampak terhadap biota-biota yang berasosiasi dengan ekosistem tersebut. Abstract

Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) holds significant economic importance in Shrimponesia as a prominent shrimp commodity. The post-larval stage often encounters challenges, primarily due to the shrimp's limited ability to adapt and survive in a new environment. Stocking density is a crucial factor influencing the growth and production performance of vannamei shrimp culture. This study aims to assess the optimal stocking density for achieving optimal growth and survival in L. vannamei. A 40-day maintenance trial was conducted at UD Mina Rahayu Kalianda to investigate the impact of different stocking densities on water quality in the maintenance media. The study utilized containers with varying stocking densities: treatment A (1 shrimp/L), treatment B (1.5 shrimp/L), and treatment C (2 shrimp/L), each with three replications. The findings revealed survival rates (SR) of 83.33% for treatment A, 62.78% for treatment B, and 58.33% for treatment C. Mean Body Weight (MBW) values were recorded as 1.2592 g/shrimp for treatment A, 1.1216 g/shrimp for treatment B, and 0.7728 g/shrimp for treatment C. Average Daily Growth (ADG) results showed 0.0313 g/shrimp for treatment A, 0.0279 g/shrimp for treatment B, and 0.0192 g/shrimp for treatment C. Based on the study, the recommended stocking density for white vannamei shrimp is 40 shrimp/L, demonstrating improved growth and survival rates for this species.

Abstract

Data on bycatch in the fishing effort required to manage fisheries resources. Unfortunately, the data on small-scale and traditional fisheries is still lacking. It makes it challenging to make fishing policies and regulations. Survey activities and experimental fishing were conducted to determine and analyze the composition of the main catch, bycatch and discarded by the local fisher's bottom traps in Sibolga, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Five units of the trap with a size of 150 cm x 100 cm x 50 cm (length x width x height) were used to collect fish data. These five trap units operated in the fishing ground, where local fishers usually operate their fishing gear. The fishing operation carried out within 1 mile of the coastline with water depths ranging from 7-10 meters. The duration of trap setting around 5-7 days for each fishing operation. A motorboat operated with a weight of 5.8 GT. The results showed that the total bottom trap catch consisted of 329 individuals with a total weight of 151.4 kg and 12 demersal fish species. The main catch was 148 individuals (88.9 kg), or 44.7% of the total catch during the experiment i.e. Chepalapholis urodeta, Ephinephelus areolatus, Epinephelus chlorostigma, Plectropomus leopardus, Ephinepelus coioides, Lates calcarifer, Lutjanus malabaricus, and Lutjanus erytropterus. The bycatch was 151 individuals (57.1 kg) or 46.1% i.e. Lethrinus obsoletus, Lutjanus ehrenbergii, Acanthurus auranticavus, Platax teira, Nemipterus japonicus, Scarus rivulatus, Lutjanus johnii, Siganus canaliculatus, Caesio cuning, and Taeniura lymma. While the discarded catch amounted to 30 individuals (5.4 kg) or 9.2% i.e. Naso brevirostris, Diodon holocanthus, and Diadema setosum. The bycatch utilization obtained by fishers was 83.4%, and the unutilized was 16.6%. The percentage of fish sizes worthy for consumption was 135 individuals (74.6%), and the size unworthy for consumption was 46 individuals (25.4%).Keywords:Fishing groundFishing gear Fishing operation Main catchTrap

Abstract

The rapid development of the industry in the coastal region has increased the concentration of heavy metals in waters. Furthermore, efforts to improve water quality in reducing the concentration of these metals are biofilter. The biofilter used in this study was a combination of E. cottonii and P. viridis. The study used Complete Random Design (CRD), with 4 treatments 5 replications. Pb heavy metal content testing uses AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). The results showed that the best treatment was in P2 (p 0.05), with the combination of E. cottonii and P. viridis at 62.50 and 225 g. The effectiveness of Pb heavy metal uptake is influenced by the density of E. cottoni, but inversely proportional to the density of P. viridis. Furthermore, in high stocking densities, E. cottonii is more effective in absorbing heavy metals than P. viridis.Keywords: E. cottonii, P. viridis, Biofilter, lead (Pb) ABSTRAKPesatnya perkembangan industri di wilayah pesisir merupakan salah satu penyebab meningkatnya konsentrasi logam berat dalam perairan. Abstract

Lokop is one of the villages in East Aceh which has a watershed in the Leuser Ecosystem. Human activities have the potential to disrupt the Trophic Status of Lokop River, such as the use of pesticides for agriculture, household waste and the use of potassium for fishing. It is necessary to research the quality of the waters in the Lokop River. The plankton community present in river waters can be an indicator of environmental pollution by analyzing the saprobic index. This study aims to determine the index of plankton diversity and water quality in the Leuser Ecosystem of the Lokop River through the saprobic index. The research was conducted at three stations. A sampling of plankton was taken in the form of a 10 cc filtrate and five replications were carried out for each study site. Water quality measurements include pH, TDS, Temperature, transparancy, depth, and current. 11 potential species can be used as pollution indicators in the Lokop River, namely Cladophora sp, Diatoma elongatum, Fragilaria capucina, Oedogonium sp., Gonatozygon sp, Lyngbya agardh, Melosira sp., Merismopedia punctata, Microspora sp, Pinnularia sp, Synedra ulna.
