Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Tapah fish (Wallago leeri) is a type of freshwater fish with high economic value. Swimming speed and endurance (Wallago leeri) observed in swimming chanel flume tank. The purpose of this study was to test the endurance and swimming speed of tapah fish. This research was conducted on 1-15 November 2018 in the Laboratory of  Fishing Gear and Material of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, University of Riau. The method used in this study was an experiment in which of testing is done directly with the number of samples used were 20 fish with an average body length of 27.2 cm and was obtained a standard deviation of body length (+ 2.22 cm). Based on the testing results obtained sustained tapah fish swimming speed sustained <0.42 TL / sec, maximum sustained 0.42 TL / sec (11.50 cm / sec), prolonged ranges from 0.42-2.23 TL / sec, burst swimming speed 2.23 TL / sec. The relationship between swimming speed and endurance of tapah fish swimming is negative correlation with the value (R2 = 0.89) which means that the endurance of fish swimming decreases if it is in a situation of high swimming speed and the ability of fish swimming is drastically reduced. Based on the results of the test it can be recommended for the cultivation floating cages the tapah fish can use the waters with currents of 0.42 TL / sec (11.50 cm / sec) which is the daily swimming speed of the tapah fish. Key word : Swimming Speed, Ability and Endurance,Tapah Fish

Abstract

Mangrove wood is the main source indigenous communities (Suku Asli) to meet the economic needs of their household. Our purposes were to describe the level of used of mangrove wood by indigenous communities at Liong River, Bengkalis Island during February to May 2014. Primary data were collected through observation and interview then data described descriptively. Results showed that mangrove woods utilized by the communities to meet the raw material of mangrove charcoal and stakes needs as the main uses while fire woods additional benefit for them. The woods rate collection was found different and influenced by tidal conditions. During spring tide they might collected 700-750 kg/person/ and 70-80 logs/person/day for charcoal and stakes respectively, while neap tides they collected 600-650 kg/person/day and 40-50 logs/person/day. We concluded that exploitation of mangrove wood in the Liong River was very high. There should be restrictions on the numbers of mangrove wood utilization, for sustainable uses.

Abstract

ABSTRACTFilter net has a mesh size in small size pockets of the net. This allows filter net has the potential to be non-selective fishing gear about the fish size and the target species catch. If the fishing gear allowed, hence its existence will ultimately have a negative impact on the sustainability of fisheries resources, especially in coastal waters. The objective of this research is to calculate compositions and proportions of the main catch, bycatch and discard of the filter net. It is expected by knowing  the composition and proportion of the main catch, bycatch and discard can provide an overview  of the pressure on the stock and sustainability of fisheries resources in  waters where it is operated. This research was used survey method. A series of survey activities was conducted directly in the field to identify and count species of filter net‘s fishing catches. Based on the main catch, bycatch and discard of the filter net, it shows that Sergetes similis is the dominant species caught bythe filter net(98.455%).  The main catch for Escualosa thoracata reaches 1.354%. Besides, the main catches that were caught were Metapenaus monocerus, Parapenaeopsis sp, Panulirus sp and Paneeus monodon with the catch percentage ranging from 0.011 to 0.024%. Percentage of by-catches reached 0.04-0.00004% of the 24 species caught and the catch removed was around 0.001-0.0005% of the 3 species caught. Keywords: bycatch, discard, filter net, fisheries resources, main catchABSTRAKGombang memiliki ukuran mata jaring pada kantong berukuran kecil.

Abstract

Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency has a great potential for mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea) resources. This commodity is highly valued, as its price range from Rp. 143,600 to 180,700 for each individual. Annually, the total catches constitute 125,000-225,000 individuals, which become one of export commodities to various countries. In Tanjung Jabung barat, the mantis shrimp has been caught by using gillnet with mesh size of 10 cm. Unfortunately, mantis shrimp fishing deal with a significant number of bycatch and discards, which potentially have negative impact on sustainable fisheries resources. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to emphasis on sustainable fishing effort of mantis shrimp and identify the composition and proportion of bycatch and discards. A series of surveys was conducted for collecting the amount of species caught by gillnet during mantis shrimp fishing operation. The result shows that the bycatch and discards dominated the total catches making up to 54.99% (7 species) and 22.69% (7 species) respectively. Mean while, the total of fishing catches for mantis shrimp was 22.32%.Keywords: bycatch, discards, gillnet, mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea)

Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited scientific information and lack of attention from stakeholders on the status of mangroves in Kembung River functioned as a basis of this study. Four series of Landsat data recorded in 1996, 2002, 2010, and 2013 were used to map mangrove land cover and changes detection. Hybrid classification technique, a combination of the object-based and random forest classifications, were applied in this study. The result showed that based on hybrid classification, mangrove coverage was detected within 82.6-88.4% overall accuracy. Change detection analyses showed that the mangrove area of Kembung River was relatively stable. For nearly two decades, we found mangrove loss about 197.2 ha, gain of 251.1 ha, and unchanged of 2904.9 ha. Changes in mangrove were generally caused by anthropogenic factors such as mangrove replanting, logging, changes over the function of mangroves into the road, embankment, settlement, shrimp farms, and natural growth. Serious attention from various parties are needed to maintain the existence and sustainablility of mangrove ecosystems in Kembung River.   Keywords: Mangrove, Sungai Kembung, monitoring, Landsat, hybrid classification

Abstract

Mantis shrimp is an export commodity that caught by fishermen in Kuala Tungkal. Mostly, the fishermen use gillnet as their main fishing gear. However, this fishing effort shares open access and common property to be its aquatic resources with other fishing businesses that may bring potential conflicts related to fishing areas, utilization of aquatic resources, fishing gear, etc. Thus, this current study aims to analyze economic value and potential conflicts in mantis shrimp catch in Kuala Tungkal. A survey method was applied as the research method. From 2015 to 2017, the export volume and value of shrimp commodities continued to increase. The results show that profit value (π) possessed by catching mantis shrimp is Rp637.500,00 per trip, R/C 5.6 and PP 39 trips showing a good financial value and potential to be developed. Meanwhile, potential conflicts in catching mantis shrimp tend to be low since there is no overlapping fishing area for each fishing gear operated by different aquatic resource users. It means that the operation of fishing gear has been set well by the community of fishing businesses in that area so that the potential for social conflicts between aquatic resources users is also low.
