Abstract

This research aims to explore tenth-grade students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT in supporting English writing skills at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), focusing on two constructs: Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU). The qualitative approach was chosen to deeply understand students’ experiences, meanings, and subjective views regarding ChatGPT in writing, as qualitative research allows for exploration beyond mere numerical data (Miles & Huberman, 1994, cited in Sugiyono, 2017). The sample consisted of 35 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that students’ perceptions were generally positive, with a stronger inclination toward ease of use. For PEOU, there were 322 agree responses in total (from 12 items), indicating that students perceived ChatGPT as simple to operate, accessible, and effective in writing. For PU, there were 314 agree responses, showing that students recognized ChatGPT’s usefulness in enriching vocabulary, improving grammar, and assisting idea generation. While a few students expressed concerns about overreliance, most perceived ChatGPT as a user-friendly and supportive tool for writing. The research suggests that integrating AI-based applications like ChatGPT, guided by TAM theory, can enhance students’ confidence and engagement in English writing instruction.

Abstract

Mastery of English-speaking skills is crucial in today’s globalized era, yet many students face challenges in achieving fluency. This research is used to find out the effect of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) learning model on the speaking ability of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Siantar. Grounded in Brown's (2004) theory of speaking, which highlights fluency, grammar, comprehension, pronunciation, and vocabulary, and Lyman's (1985) TPS framework, the study emphasizes cooperative learning through structured interaction. A quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach was employed, involving an experimental class using the TPS model and a control class with conventional teaching. Pre-test and post-test data were collected to measure speaking performance. The findings showed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with the average pre-test score rising from 44.0 to 75.2, compared to the control class's increase from 40.8 to 68.53. The results confirm the TPS model's effectiveness in enhancing students' English-speaking skills. In conclusion, the Think-Pair-Share learning model is a proven instructional method for improving English-speaking skills in junior high school students, contributing to evidence supporting cooperative learning models in language education.

Abstract

Kemampuan membaca merupakan keterampilan dasar yang berperan penting dalam perkembangan literasi anak. Namun, hasil asesmen nasional menunjukkan masih banyak anak sekolah dasar di Indonesia yang kesulitan memahami bacaan sederhana, termasuk di Kota Bima, Nusa Tenggara Barat. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis efektivitas metode Montessori dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca anak usia sekolah dasar awal. Penelitian menggunakan metode campuran (kualitatif dan kuantitatif) dengan subjek 12 anak berusia 6–9 tahun yang belum memiliki keterampilan baca tulis memadai. Instrumen penelitian meliputi observasi kesiapan belajar, tes membaca (pretes–postes), dan dokumentasi. Hasil observasi menunjukkan sebagian besar anak memiliki kesiapan motorik (90%) dan minat membaca-menulis (80%) yang tinggi, tetapi perilaku belajar masih rendah (40%). Skor rata-rata pretes membaca sebesar 10,5 dari 20 poin, dengan skor gabungan membaca-menulis 24,33 dari 35 poin. Setelah intervensi Montessori, nilai postes meningkat menjadi rata-rata 14,75 poin, atau terjadi kenaikan +4,25 poin. Hampir seluruh peserta mengalami peningkatan, termasuk anak dengan skor terendah pada tahap awal. Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa metode Montessori efektif dalam memperkuat keterampilan membaca dasar melalui pendekatan multisensori, konkret, dan mandiri. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan penerapan metode Montessori sebagai strategi alternatif peningkatan literasi awal di daerah dengan keterbatasan akses pendidikan formal.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji reflektivitas praktik pedagogis mahasiswa dalam mata kuliah Micro Teaching melalui pendekatan pembelajaran mendalam. Pergeseran paradigma pendidikan abad ke-21 menuntut calon guru tidak sekadar menguasai aspek teknis mengajar, tetapi juga memiliki kemampuan reflektif, kritis, dan transformatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, data diperoleh melalui observasi partisipatif, dokumentasi RPP, lembar refleksi, serta umpan balik dosen dan teman sejawat. Analisis dilakukan melalui reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa reflektivitas mahasiswa muncul dalam tiga tahap utama: (1) perencanaan, mahasiswa mulai mempertimbangkan tujuan bermakna, strategi pembelajaran sesuai konteks, meski sebagian masih terbatas pada refleksi normatif; (2) pelaksanaan, refleksi tampak pada kesadaran terhadap interaksi kelas, penggunaan strategi bertanya, komunikasi nonverbal, dan evaluasi berbasis rekaman video; serta (3) evaluasi, mahasiswa menunjukkan refleksi kritis melalui umpan balik. Secara keseluruhan, praktik reflektif ini mencerminkan prinsip pembelajaran mendalam berupa keterlibatan aktif, koneksi bermakna, evaluasi kritis, dan perbaikan berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa keberhasilan reflektivitas mahasiswa tidak hanya ditentukan oleh kemampuan individu, tetapi juga oleh desain pembelajaran, budaya kelas, dan peran dosen dalam memfasilitasi ruang refleksi. Temuan ini berimplikasi pada pengembangan model pedagogis Micro Teaching berbasis pembelajaran mendalam, yang diharapkan mampu memperkuat kompetensi profesional calon guru sebagai praktisi reflektif yang adaptif terhadap dinamika pendidikan.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to analyze how using the Duolingo app has affected the speaking abilities of seventh-grade students at SMPS Nur Hasanah Medan. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach which included five students as subject of the research. Information was gathered through observation and interviews. The result suggest that using Duolingo has helped improve students' speaking skills, especially their confidence and pronunciation. Most students expressed that they enjoyed learning with Duolingo because it provided a fun, non-threatening, and interactive learning environment. Students demonstrated noticeable improvements in fluency, vocabulary use, and motivation to speak English. However, some challenges remained, especially in terms of spontaneous speech and constructing complex sentences. In other words, Duolingo can be an effective supplementary tool in improving students’ English-speaking skills, though it should be accompanied by guided instruction to develop deeper communication competence.

Abstract

The two traditional songs, Sakura Sakura and Mō Lì Huā, originated from different countries. These traditional songs are often referred to as iconic popular songs that represent two different aspects of beautiful flowers in Japan and China. With the Grice lens on maxims and violated of maxims, it may reveal the hidden structural meaning of these two traditional songs. The objective of this research was to determine 1) How frequently are the Gricean maxims fulfilled and violated in Sakura Sakura? 2) How frequently are the Gricean maxims fulfilled and violated in Mō Lì Huā? The research applied the qualitative method with a comparative analysis. The data collection procedure involved identifying the recognized maxims, assigning those related to them, classifying the responses, and integrating the maxims and violations. The research showed there were six lyrics of Sakura Sakura, Cherry Blossoms, one maxim quality, and one maxim relation. Sakura Sakura has four violations: two violations of quality and two violations of quantity. Meanwhile, Mō Lì Huā, Jasmine Flower has five lyrics, one maxim quantity, and one maxim relation. Mo Lì Huā, three violations, two violations of quality, and one violation of manner.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of deixis in Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony in the United States Congress, focusing on how deictic expressions contribute to meaning, positioning, and speaker-hearer relations in political discourse. Deixis, a central concept in pragmatics, refers to words and phrases such as pronouns, temporal expressions, and spatial indicators that require contextual information for interpretation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The primary data for this research consists of video recordings of Mark Zuckerberg’s congressional hearings in Youtube channel. The utterances of Mark Zuckerberg and Senators became the object of the research to be investigated. The findings show that the deictic markers employed during testimony in Congress categorized into three types; they are personal, temporal, and spatial deixis. Zuckerberg and Senators skillfully employs deixis to construct an image of accountability, collaboration, and respect, while subtly shifting responsibility through strategic pronoun use. By examining how deixis functions in Zuckerberg’s testimony, the research contributes to broader insights in political linguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics.

Abstract

This study explores the complex dynamics of interruption in conversations, with a particular focus on gender differences within English and Arabic linguistic contexts. As a widely observed conversational feature, interruption reveals underlying power dynamics and social roles shaped by cultural norms. The researcher applies a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative analyses of recorded conversations from English and Arabic-speaking communities. The findings highlight notable variations in interruption patterns between the two languages, uncovering distinct cultural and linguistic practices. Through a comparative lens, this study offers a nuanced understanding of how gender influences the frequency, types, and functions of interruptions, thereby enriching the field of pragmatics and contributing to the broader discourse on gendered communication.

Abstract

Simbolisasi guru dalam teks budaya populer mencerminkan bagaimana masyarakat memaknai peran guru secara sosial dan ideologis. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan citra guru dalam simbol linguistik pada berbagai teks budaya populer lintas negara, yaitu Indonesia, Jepang, India, Amerika Serikat, dan Prancis. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan intertekstual. Data berupa film, lagu, dan puisi dipilih berdasarkan keberadaan representasi eksplisit dan implisit tentang sosok guru. Analisis dilakukan dengan pendekatan semiotik dan tematik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tiga kategori utama representasi, yaitu: (1) guru sebagai figur penginspirasi moral dan sosial, (2) guru sebagai tokoh pemberontak terhadap sistem pendidikan, dan (3) guru sebagai simbol nilai budaya dan nasional. Representasi tersebut menunjukkan adanya konstruksi kolektif mengenai guru sebagai agen perubahan sosial yang bermuatan simbolis dan emosional. Kebaruan penelitian ini terletak pada integrasi pendekatan intertekstual lintas negara dan lintas media (film, lagu, puisi) dalam menganalisis simbolisasi guru sebagai entitas budaya. Temuan ini menambah khazanah keilmuan dalam bidang pendidikan terutama apresiasi terhadap peran guru dalam meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membandingkan lirik lagu tradisional Mauliate Ma Inang (Batak Toba) dan Inang Pangguruan (Batak Simalungun) dengan pendekatan sastra bandingan melalui perspektif struktural dan sosiokultural. Keduanya merepresentasikan penghormatan mendalam terhadap sosok ibu serta hubungan anak dan orang tua dalam budaya Batak. Data diperoleh melalui studi pustaka dan dianalisis berdasarkan aspek linguistik, makna simbolik, struktur naratif, serta konteks sosial budaya. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa meskipun berasal dari sub-etnik berbeda, kedua lagu memiliki kesamaan tematik berupa rasa syukur dan penghormatan kepada ibu. Perbedaannya terletak pada dialek bahasa, gaya metrik, dan ekspresi emosional. Lagu Batak Toba cenderung lebih ekspresif, sedangkan lagu Simalungun bersifat reflektif terhadap peran ibu sebagai pendidik. Kedua lagu mencerminkan nilai-nilai Batak seperti hagabeon (keturunan), hamoraon (kekayaan), dan hasangapon (kehormatan). Perbedaan historis dan geografis memengaruhi gaya artistik masing-masing. Penelitian ini memperkaya pemahaman tentang sastra lisan Batak dan menekankan pentingnya pelestarian budaya melalui dokumentasi akademik, serta menunjukkan keberagaman ekspresi budaya dalam satu rumpun etnik yang sama.
