Abstract

This study aimed to investigate pronunciation errors made by fourth-semester students of the English Literature Department at Bumigora University during speaking class. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected from students’ oral descriptions of daily activities. Their speech was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for pronunciation errors, focusing on consonants, vowels, and diphthongs. The findings revealed three major categories of errors. First, consonant errors occurred most frequently in the substitution of interdental sounds /θ/ and /ð/ with alveolar sounds /t/ and /d/. Second, vowel errors were observed in the confusion between long and short vowels, such as /iː/ and /ɪ/, and the mispronunciation of /æ/ and /e/. Third, diphthong errors appeared when students simplified diphthongs into monophthongs, such as [haʊs] pronounced as [hos]. These errors were caused by several factors, including mother tongue interference, lack of exposure to authentic English pronunciation, difficulty in perceiving phonemic contrasts, and psychological factors such as nervousness or hesitation. The study concludes that students’ pronunciation errors are not only challenges but also indicators of their interlanguage development. Error analysis, viewed through an applied linguistics approach, provides valuable insights for teachers to design corrective feedback and targeted pronunciation practice. By addressing these errors systematically, lecturers can help students improve their communicative competence and confidence in speaking English.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the form of intertextuality between the short film Lamun Sumelang (2019) by Ludy Oji Prastama and the creative work Pulung Gantung: Menyingkap Tragedi Bunuh Diri di Gunungkidul (Pulung Gantung: Uncovering the Tragedy of Suicide in Gunungkidul) (2002) by Darmaningtyas by examining the interconnected meanings, themes, and socio-cultural representations presented in both works. The phenomenon of suicide, which frequently occurs in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Special Region, has long been a complex social and cultural issue. Although various studies indicate that the main factors contributing to suicide in the region are related to socio-economic pressure, poverty, shame (wirang), and social isolation, most of the community still associates it with the myth of pulung gantung—a reddish celestial light believed to be a sign foretelling death by hanging. A descriptive qualitative analysis is employed using Fitzsimmons (2013) theory of intertextuality and the mise-en-scène approach as a supporting framework for visual analysis in film. The study concludes that Lamun Sumelang represents a reinterpretation and revitalization of the text Pulung Gantung through the medium of cinema presenting an intertextual dialogue between social reality, local myth, and contemporary artistic expression. Through the lens of intertextuality, the film functions not only as a cultural representation but also as an educational and reflective medium for understanding the phenomenon of suicide within rural Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical structures used in the tourism article “What’s the Problem with Overtourism?” written by Leahy (2023) and published in National Geographic Traveler. The research focuses on identifying and describing various grammatical features, including tenses, passive voice, gerund and infinitive constructions, and relative clauses, to reveal how grammatical choices shape meaning and readability in tourism discourse. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study finds that the author employs a range of grammatical patterns to convey factual information, emphasize ongoing global concerns, and maintain a balance between persuasive and informative tones. The use of present simple and perfect tenses dominates the text, reflecting both timeless truths and current relevance of overtourism issues. Passive constructions are strategically used to emphasize processes over agents, while gerund and infinitive forms add fluidity and continuity to the narrative. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of grammar use in professional tourism writing and provide pedagogical insights for English learners, especially those in tourism and communication studies.

Abstract

AntConc is an open-source corpus linguistic tool featuring basic corpus linguistic analytical techniques. A powerful element of AntConc is its various pattern-searching methods. This paper describes the flavours of AntConc’s searching methods and illustrates them for the query of phonological, morphological, and syntactic phenomena. The more advanced searching method, namely Regular Expressions (RegEx), is also discussed. The paper illustrates the use of RegEx for querying a rather complex morphological phenomenon in Indonesian, namely reduplication. RegEx search output is compared with the output from the basic Wildcard search feature to accentuate the sophistication and flexibility of RegEx for more targeted and specific results. The paper, overall, underscores the importance of mastering the different methods of querying texts with different complexities in AntConc for investigating a wider range of data-intensive, linguistic inquiries.

Abstract

English is an international language that plays a vital role in the era of globalization, particularly in tourism, education, and the professional world. However, English proficiency among young people in Indonesia, including those in Denpasar, still faces several challenges. One major obstacle is limited vocabulary mastery, which hinders their ability to understand texts, follow conversations, and express ideas both orally and in writing. This condition often reduces students’ confidence to use English in daily communication. Therefore, innovative strategies are needed to enhance vocabulary acquisition in a simple, engaging, and youth-oriented way. This study introduces the use of English-language stickers as a medium for incidental learning in public spaces, specifically at three popular dining spots in Denpasar—Kopi Jaya, Nasi Jinggo Bu Jero, and Nasi Jinggo Gundul. These stickers serve not only as aesthetic elements but also as educational tools that present simple and contextual vocabulary that is easy to comprehend. Due to their visual and repetitive nature, as well as their closeness to young people’s social environments, the stickers are expected to stimulate intrinsic motivation and strengthen vocabulary internalization. The research applies a qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative data using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The objectives are to (1) identify factors contributing to low English vocabulary proficiency among young people in Denpasar, (2) examine the role of stickers as an incidental learning medium, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of English stickers in public spaces in enhancing motivation to learn English. The findings are expected to contribute meaningfully to students by improving vocabulary and motivation, to teachers as an alternative non-formal learning strategy, and to future researchers as a reference for developing simple, low-cost, and impactful learning media that connect formal learning with real-life experiences.

Abstract

This study critically examines how overtourism is discursively constructed in English-language travel journalism. Grounded in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research investigates the linguistic and rhetorical strategies used to represent overtourism, tourism actors, and affected communities. Specifically, it analyzes discursive features such as lexical choices, representations of agency, evaluative language, modality, and ideological positioning that shape readers’ perceptions of overtourism. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, the study draws on a corpus of travel journalism articles addressing overtourism published in international media outlets. The findings reveal that overtourism is predominantly framed as a global and systemic phenomenon through neutralized agency, passive constructions, and expert-oriented voices. Tourists are discursively positioned in ambiguous roles, portrayed simultaneously as contributors to and victims of overtourism. These strategies produce a balanced yet depersonalized narrative that foregrounds sustainability, responsibility, and policy-oriented solutions. The study contributes theoretically to discourse studies and offers practical implications for tourism communication and English language pedagogy, particularly in the areas of critical reading and media literacy.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of mobile technology has significantly transformed higher education, creating opportunities for more flexible, engaging, and personalized teaching approaches. This study examines the implementation of mobile learning marketing in teaching Introduction to Business courses in universities. Mobile learning marketing is defined as the integration of marketing principles such as value creation, engagement, personalization, and learner journey design—into mobile-based pedagogical strategies. Adopting a conceptual–theoretical approach, this study synthesizes existing literature, theoretical models, and educational frameworks to construct a comprehensive analytical perspective. The analysis draws upon pedagogical theories (constructivism, experiential learning, self-determination), technology integration models (TPACK, SAMR, CoI), technology adoption theories (TAM, UTAUT), and marketing frameworks (service-dominant logic, customer engagement). Sources include peer-reviewed journals, books, and case studies published between 2010 and 2024. Findings highlight that mobile learning marketing can enhance student engagement, flexibility, and real-world relevance in business education. It allows learners to experience authentic business simulations, collaborate through mobile platforms, and access content anytime and anywhere. The approach aligns with students’ digital habits and fosters essential competencies such as adaptability, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking. However, challenges persist, including the digital divide, faculty readiness, risks of cognitive overload, and limitations in assessment validity. The study concludes that mobile learning marketing is not simply a technological trend but a pedagogical innovation that repositions learning as a co-created service between educators and students. For successful implementation, universities must address infrastructural gaps, support faculty training, and design inclusive strategies that ensure equitable access. Future research should empirically evaluate the effectiveness of mobile learning marketing in Introduction to Business courses and explore its long-term impact on students’ entrepreneurial readiness.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Rare Angon traditions within the context of the Balinese kite festival, with particular attention to shifts in youth participation, cultural meaning, and innovation. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach using an explanatory sequential design, integrating quantitative survey data from 150 respondents with qualitative interviews, participant observation, and visual analysis. The findings indicate a significant generational shift in the interpretation of kite-flying practices. Older participants continue to uphold strong spiritual values grounded in Hindu cosmology, particularly the symbolic relationship between Shiva and Parvati. In contrast, younger participants increasingly view the festival as a platform for creativity, competition, and social interaction. This shift reflects a broader transformation from ritual-based devotion to performative cultural expression. Drawing on the Tri Hita Karana framework, the study demonstrates that the kite festival continues to maintain a dynamic balance among spiritual (parahyangan), social (pawongan), and environmental (palemahan) dimensions. At the same time, innovations in kite-making techniques and the integration of tourism-related elements have enhanced youth engagement, while also raising concerns regarding cultural commodification. The study concludes that the sustainability of Rare Angon traditions depends on the capacity to negotiate continuity and change through adaptive cultural practices. These findings contribute to broader discussions on cultural resilience, heritage transformation, and sustainable tourism in contemporary societies.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking skills and to analyze the most frequently used strategies at SMP Dwijendra Denpasar. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were three English teachers who taught Grade VII, VIII, and IX. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that teachers employed various strategies in teaching speaking skills, including role play, discussion, pair work, group work, storytelling, question and answer, interview, debate, picture describing, and games-based strategies. The strategies most frequently used by all teachers were role play, discussion, question and answer, picture describing, and gamesbased strategies. Meanwhile, the interview strategy was used selectively, and the debate strategy was not used. Each teacher also tended to use one dominant strategy, where Teacher 1 used role play, Teacher 2 used pair work, and Teacher 3 used group work, depending on students’ levels and characteristics. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that selecting appropriate strategies plays an important role in improving students’ participation, confidence, and communicative competence in speaking skills. Therefore, teachers are expected to select and implement suitable strategies to support more effective speaking instruction.

Abstract

English communication competence has become an important requirement for vocational students, particularly in culinary and hospitality fields where interaction with guests, colleagues, and international stakeholders is frequently required. Although previous studies have widely discussed workplace English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP), limited attention has been given to students’ perceptions of the role of General English as a foundation before entering professional communication contexts. This study aims to explore how Culinary Study Program students perceive the contribution of General English instruction to their workplace communication readiness. A qualitative research approach was employed through semi-structured interviews involving 14 students from the Culinary Study Program at Akademi Komunitas MAPINDO. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s framework to identify recurring patterns in students’ experiences and perceptions. The findings revealed four main themes: (1) General English as the foundation of language understanding, (2) grammar knowledge supporting communication accuracy, (3) the development of question formation and appropriate responses, and (4) increased confidence in using English during workplace interactions. The students perceived that General English provided essential linguistic knowledge, including grammar, vocabulary, sentence structures, and communication strategies that supported their readiness to communicate during workplace practice. However, students also indicated that foundational English learning should be complemented with workplace-related communication activities to address specific industry demands. This study highlights the importance of maintaining General English as a fundamental component of vocational education, as it provides students with the necessary linguistic and psychological preparation before developing more specialized workplace English skills.
