Abstract

In the context of educational development characterized by technological advancement, dynamic social change, and increasing demands for critical thinking and problem-solving skills, there is a need for learning approaches that are not merely theoretical but also contextual, practical, and experience-based. This study aims to analyze John Dewey’s concept of pragmatism and its relevance to contemporary Islamic education. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. The primary data source is John Dewey’s seminal work Democracy and Education (1916), supported by various scholarly literature on Islamic education. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that John Dewey’s pragmatism emphasizes experience as the primary foundation of learning through the concepts of instrumentalism, the theory of experience, inquiry logic, progressive education, and democratic and social education, all of which position education as an active, contextual, and problem-solving-oriented process. In the context of Islamic education, these concepts are relevant for strengthening experiential learning, implementing learning by doing, and developing students’ critical and participatory thinking skills. Nevertheless, a fundamental epistemological difference exists, as pragmatism is grounded in empirical experience, whereas Islamic education is based on divine revelation. Therefore, the application of Dewey’s pragmatism in Islamic education should be carried out selectively and critically, treating it primarily as a methodological approach. Thus, John Dewey’s pragmatism can contribute to the development of Islamic education that is more contextual, practical, and responsive to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of unauthorized polygamy in Indonesia as a reflection of the gap between legal norms and social reality, with particular attention to its implications for women’s legal protection. Although Law No. 1 of 1974 requires court approval and spousal consent, such provisions are frequently bypassed, resulting in legal uncertainty and gender-based disadvantages. This research employs a normative qualitative approach using library research, analyzing statutory regulations, Religious Court decisions, and relevant scholarly literature through conceptual and case approaches. The findings reveal that unauthorized polygamy persists due to socio-cultural, economic, and religious factors, as well as weak law enforcement and inconsistent judicial reasoning. While some Religious Court decisions incorporate substantive justice considerations—such as women’s conditions, children’s welfare, and social impacts—others remain formalistic and procedural, leading to uneven legal protection. From the perspectives of Pancasila and Islamic Sociological Jurisprudence, this condition indicates that the law has not fully functioned as an instrument of social justice and public welfare (maslahah). The study concludes that strengthening women’s legal protection requires an integrated approach combining legal reform, judicial capacity development, and socio-legal awareness. Such efforts are essential to ensure that Islamic family law evolves toward a more equitable, context-sensitive, and justice-oriented system.

Abstract

The way of asking for knowledge, as shown in the Qur'an and Hadith, is very important for helping students develop good morals. In Islam, learning is not just about gaining information, but also about growing into a person with good values and behaving in a moral way. This research looks into the idea of proper behavior when seeking knowledge, as shown in the Qur'an and Hadith, and how it helps shape a person's character. This study uses a qualitative method, focusing on library research, and looks at interpretations of the Qur'an, Hadith sources, books, and scientific articles about Islamic education and ethics. The results show that being sincere, humble, patient, respectful towards teachers, and using what you learn are the main values that should go along with learning. Combining knowledge with good manners can help form people who are both smart and have strong values. So, teaching proper manners in schools should still be a top focus to raise people who have good values and useful knowledge.

Abstract

This study analyzes the formation of students’ religious identity through the boarding school program at Integrated Islamic Junior High School using George Herbert Mead’s symbolic interactionism. Employing a qualitative case study at IT Nusantara Kembaran Junior High School, Banyumas, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings show that religious identity formation occurs through symbolic interaction involving three dialectical stages. First, students interpret religious symbols provided by the boarding school environment, including special uniforms, congregational worship schedules, the use of Ustadz and Santri labels, and daily religious rituals, which shape religious awareness. Second, meaning is negotiated through social interaction among students, supervisors, and the dormitory community, enabling students to take the role of others and understand themselves from social perspectives. Third, religious values are internalized and reflected in concrete behavioral changes, such as increased worship discipline, social responsibility, and peaceful conflict resolution. This research contributes to Islamic education theory by integrating symbolic interactionism and offers practical implications for boarding school managers in designing environments that support students’ religious identity development in structured and meaningful learning contexts.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of emotions in the animated film Inside Out (2015) through the lens of Islamic Ethics and Mysticism (Akhlak Tasawuf), focusing on the value of sincerity (al-ridha) as a shaping force in the emotional regulation of the main character, Riley. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through documentation technique, the study examines scenes, dialogues, and character expressions reflecting processes of emotional acceptance and management. Data were analyzed using a combined framework drawing from the concept of rida in Sufi ethics and the Process Model of Emotion Regulation, particularly cognitive change and response modulation strategies. Findings indicate that al-ridha functions as an inner stabilizer guiding Riley toward nafs muthmainnah (a tranquil soul), evidenced in key scenes such as Riley's emotional disclosure to her parents and the transformation of her core memories. The concept of itsar (empathy) also emerges as a social dimension of emotional regulation that conventional psychological models tend to overlook. This study contributes an interdisciplinary framework bridging the psychological and spiritual dimensions of film analysis, while addressing a gap in research on animated films from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

The study entitled “Analysis of the Role of Islamic Religious Education Teachers in Developing Students’ Social Awareness (A Case Study at YPP Sobang Junior High School)” was motivated by the importance of Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam / PAI) teachers in fostering students’ social awareness, which does not emerge automatically but must be cultivated through education. This study was based on conditions at YPP Sobang Junior High School, where students still demonstrated low environmental awareness, limited participation in social activities, and suboptimal internalization of religious values. The research questions focused on the role of PAI teachers in developing students’ social awareness, the strategies they employ, and the impact of PAI learning on students’ social attitudes. The objective of this study was to identify the roles, strategies, and impacts of PAI teachers in fostering students’ social awareness. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving PAI teachers, the principal, curriculum staff, and students. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that PAI teachers play a significant role in developing students’ social awareness through religious habituation, role modeling, and social activities. The strategies implemented included contextual learning, mutual assistance, and cooperation. The impacts were reflected in increased empathy, social concern, responsibility, and social interaction among students, although challenges remained in terms of student participation and the influence of the external environment outside the school.

Abstract

Music is one of the effective media for conveying Islamic values, including the concept of tawakal (trust in Allah). Through song lyrics, religious messages can be delivered to listeners in language that is easy to understand while conveying profound meaning. This study aims to analyze the representation of tawakal in the lyrics of Insha Allah by Maher Zain using a semantic approach based on Al-Ghazali’s perspective. This study employed a qualitative approach using the qualitative content analysis method. The research data consisted of selected song lyric excerpts, which were analyzed based on their lexical and contextual meanings and subsequently classified into the three aspects of tawakal according to Al-Ghazali, namely knowledge ('ilm), spiritual state (hal), and action (amal). The findings indicate that the lyrics of Insha Allah represent tawakal through faith in Allah, the transformation of one's inner state from despair to hope, and the act of returning to Allah through prayer and complete surrender. These findings demonstrate that the song functions not only as a form of entertainment but also as a medium for conveying Islamic spiritual values while enriching semantic studies on Islamic song lyrics.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of responsibility in maintaining trust (amanah) through the perspectives of Quranic verses and hadiths and explores its relevance to contemporary social, family, and religious issues. In the face of increasingly complex social challenges, the values of responsibility and trustworthiness remain essential ethical foundations for fostering harmonious and accountable communities. This study employed a qualitative approach using a literature review method by analyzing Quranic verses, hadiths, and relevant scholarly references. The analysis focuses on three main themes: parental responsibility in the family based on QS. At-Tahrim verse 6 integrated with the concept of life balance; leadership responsibility in QS. Al-An'am verse 70 associated with anti-corruption leadership; and religious responsibility in QS. An-Nisa verse 36 examined in relation to the phenomenon of Islamophobia. The findings reveal that the Islamic concept of amanah provides a comprehensive normative framework for individual, family, social, and collective responsibilities. The selected hadiths reinforce Quranic teachings by offering practical guidance for ethical behavior and responsible leadership. Furthermore, integrating these teachings with contemporary issues demonstrates that Islamic values remain relevant in addressing modern societal challenges, including governance, family resilience, and interreligious relations. This study concludes that internalizing the values of trust, responsibility, tolerance, and justice can strengthen social harmony, promote ethical leadership, and support peaceful coexistence in Indonesia and other multicultural Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study analyzes the politeness strategies of characters' speech acts in Langston Hughes' short story "Thank You, Ma'am" using Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory (1987) integrated with the perspective of Islamic Moral Mysticism (Akhlak Tasawuf). A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through reading and noting techniques and purposive sampling. The primary data source consists of 15 utterances drawn from dialogues between the two main characters, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger, analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) model. The findings identify three politeness strategies: positive politeness (53.3%), negative politeness (26.7%), and bald on record (20%), while the off-record strategy was absent. Positive politeness emerged as the dominant strategy, reflecting the characters' efforts to build solidarity and moral transformation. Concurrently, the Akhlak Tasawuf analysis identified three prevailing values—tawadhu' (humility), shiddiq (truthfulness and sincerity), and hifdzul lisan (guarding one's speech)—each correlating with the politeness strategies employed. These findings suggest that linguistic politeness in this short story functions not merely as a pragmatic face-management tool, but also as a representation of ethical and spiritual values that foster behavioral change and the restoration of interpersonal relationships.
