Abstract

This article explores the use of innovative strategies in improving learners' ability to create simple dialog among Grade 8 learners at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Taman Sidoarjo. The main focus of this research is to apply project-based learning model combined with guided conversation technique in learning the material of asking and giving opinion. Project-based learning as a learning model aims to stimulate the activeness, creativity of students in completing the learning. Learners are guided to create text in the form of a simple dialog with the theme of asking and giving opinion and then practiced with peers. By using guided conversation techniques, learners are guided intently to achieve learning objectives. Learning begins with the use of ice breaking relevant to the material, triggering questions, video footage, imitating conversations based on the text that has been provided until the practice of making conversations is a form of guidance to students. The research method applied in this study carries a combinative approach between project-based learning models with guided conversation techniques. The observation results showed a significant increase in students' active participation during the learning process. Students were more actively involved in group discussions, questions, and assignments. They are not only the recipients of information, but also the main actors in their own learning. This increased participation indicates that the models and techniques used are able to create a learning environment that stimulates more intensive student engagement. The conclusion we can draw is that this innovative strategy proves that the use of project-based learning model with guided conversation technique can be an effective step in improving learners' ability in the creation of speaking text in English language learning.

Abstract

Education is a major pillar in the development of a nation, and the quality of education becomes a key factor in determining the progress of a society. In this digital era, there is a rapid development in the use of information technology, and this has a significant impact on the education sector. The purpose of this study is for data-driven education: data processing as the key to improving the quality of mathematics education. This research uses a mixed method that combines qualitative and quantitative methods. This approach was chosen to address the complexity of data management and the comprehensiveness of this topic. The research begins with an in-depth literature analysis to understand the potential of Data-Driven Education. By using data as a guide, educators can make smarter decisions, detail instructional strategies, and create an educational environment that allows each student to reach his or her full potential. This is done by combining the results of various data of educator learners who can make informational decisions to improve the quality of mathematics learning. The application of data management in the context of mathematics education can provide concrete solutions to overcome challenges and improve the quality of learning. The right use of data provides the basis for smarter decisions and more adaptive learning, creating a learning environment that fits the needs of each student. By integrating Data-Driven Education effectively, we can move towards a more inclusive, personalized and successful mathematics education. The use of data contributes significantly in improving the quality and inclusivity of mathematics education. The integration of data management in mathematics education is a critical step towards a more adaptive, inclusive, and effective education

Abstract

Substance abuse is among the major issues affecting schools and education in Nigeria. Many substances affect the mind and whole body of youngsters negatively leading to hospitalizations, school drop-outs, absenteeism and other effects that affect education at whole. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of substance abuse on cognitive potential of some schooling youngsters in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State Nigeria. 15 young people that abuse substances and are attending schools, and 15 normal people in Gwadabawa, Sokoto state, Nigeria were recruited in this work and were assessed with Montreal cognitive Assessment standard methods to evaluate the cognitive domain of the participants. The result reveals substance abusers scored 357 ± 7.0, while 396.0 ± 10.0 was scored by non-substance abusers; indicating that substance abusers show comparatively lower cognitive ability compared to the control youngsters enrolled in this work. The results indicate that the substances been abused by the young people reduce their cognitive ability (a prelude of cognitive domain of the participants of the study) and in turn could inflict their academic performances as well. Thus, it is pertinent to help young ones shun substances through awareness creation, counselling, strict laws, drug education and relations.

Abstract

The study determined the digital skills competencies required by Electrical Engineering Lecturers for effective utilization of Open Educational Resources in Polytechnics in Northeast Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study which survey research design was adopted. The study population comprised 186 individuals, consisting of 151 Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology Lecturers and 35 ICT unit heads from across 12 Polytechnics in North East Nigeria. Due to the manageable size of the population, no sampling was conducted; instead, the entire population was included in the study. Data collected for the study was through a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers, termed the “Open Educational Resources Digital Skills Competencies Questionnaire (OERDSCQ)”, employing a 5-point Likert and Rating scales. The questionnaire underwent validation by three experts and a trial test was conducted on five lecturers and four ICT unit staff at Yobe State Polytechnic, Damaturu, where a reliability index of 0.89 was achieved using the Cronbach Alpha method. The mean statistic was utilized to answer the four research questions. Based on the results, the study revealed that across eleven clusters of competencies ranging from technical skills to pedagogical competencies, all competencies were deemed necessary for effective teaching and learning in electrical engineering technology; and regarding the accessibility of open educational resources (OERs) in Northeast Nigerian Polytechnics reveal a significant discrepancy in availability and ease of access to OER. The study recommended that the government should implement structured digital skills training programs tailored to the needs of electrical engineering lecturers in Northeast Nigerian Polytechnics; and the government should invest in infrastructure and technological resources to enhance access to digital tools and resources within Northeast Nigerian Polytechnics.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to explore the pedagogical skills needs of motor vehicle mechanics work teachers for effective content delivery in government science and technical colleges in Adamawa and Taraba States. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. The study was conducted in Adamawa and Taraba States using descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 123 respondents comprising 81 MVMW teachers and 42 instructors from all the 21 BEST Centres and Government Science and Technical colleges in Adamawa and Taraba States, Nigeria. There was no sampling as the entire population was used because it was manageable. A structured questionnaire tagged: Pedagogical Skills Needs of Motor Vehicle Mechanics Works Teachers Questionnaire (PSNMVMWTQ) consisting of 30 items was validated by three experts. The Instrument was trial tested in Gombe State and the Cronbach Alpha reliability method was used to test the reliability of the instrument and a 0.84 reliability coefficient was obtained. Data collected for the study was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0. Mean statistics was used to answer the two research questions while a t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed among others that pedagogical skills needed include stimulating critical thinking, designing effective evaluation procedures, and implementing appropriate instruction. Similarly, affective skills were deemed needed including effective communication, active listening, and conflict resolution. Importantly, there were no significant differences between instructors and MVMW teachers regarding the perceived importance of these skills. It is recommended that Given the identified pedagogical skills needs of motor vehicle mechanics work (MVMW) teachers, Ministries of Education should design and implement targeted training programs focusing on instructional goal identification, task analysis, instructional design, questioning techniques, and evaluation procedures.
