Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between perceived social support and academic stress among out-of-town final-year students at Surabaya State University. A quantitative correlational approach with a cross-sectional design was used, involving 169 participants. Data were collected using the 12-item Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS) and the 19-item Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA). Spearman correlation analysis was applied due to non-normal data distribution. Results showed a significant negative relationship between perceived social support and academic stress (ρ = -0.214, p = 0.005). Descriptive analysis indicated moderate-to-high perceived social support (M = 38.314, SD = 5.451) and moderate academic stress (M = 62.491, SD = 13.611). These findings suggest that higher social support from family, friends, and significant others is associated with lower academic stress. Despite the weak correlation strength, the significant p-value indicates a reliable relationship. Other factors such as self-confidence, resilience, and coping strategies may also contribute. A comprehensive intervention program combining social support enhancement with internal psychological resource strengthening is recommended to support students' academic well-being.

Abstract

Exfoliative oral cytology is a non-invasive screening method that supports the early detection of precancerous lesions and oral cavity cancers. The quality of the specimens produced for examination is influenced by preanalytical factors, including the type of sampling device used. This study aims to analyze the effect of using cotton swabs and cytobrushes on the quality of exfoliative oral cytology specimens stained with Papanicolaou using the Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) method. This laboratory-based experimental study involved 18 healthy participants aged 18–25 years, selected using purposive sampling. Mucosal samples were collected using cotton swabs and cytobrushes, resulting in 36 preparations. All preparations were processed using the LBC method, stained with Papanicolaou stain, and then examined under a microscope to evaluate cell density, distribution, and the clarity of the preparation’s background. Differences in the surface characteristics between the cotton swab and the cytobrush were found to influence the quality of the resulting preparations. The cytobrush was deemed more effective for assessing cell density, whereas the cotton swab provided a cleaner background and better cell distribution. These findings can be considered when selecting sampling tools appropriate for the purpose of oral cytology examinations.

Abstract

Postoperative pain following laparotomy remains a major challenge as it may delay recovery and increase the risk of complications. This study examined the effect of Audio-Tactile Synchronization (ATS) on pain intensity and complications among laparotomy patients. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was conducted with 114 participants (57 ATS, 57 control) selected through purposive sampling. Pain was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale, while complications were evaluated using physiological indicators. Data were analyzed using Friedman, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05). Before intervention, moderate pain was reported by 89.5% of the intervention group and 86.0% of the control group. By day three, mild pain was achieved by 64.9% of the ATS group compared to 49.1% of the control group. Significant pain reductions occurred in both groups (p < 0.001). Complication scores also declined significantly (p < 0.001), with median scores decreasing from 4 to 1 in the ATS group by day two, while remaining 3 in the control group. Between-group differences were significant on day two (p = 0.016) and day three (p < 0.001). ATS effectively reduced postoperative pain and accelerated recovery from complications, supporting its integration as an evidence-based complementary nursing intervention for laparotomy patients

Abstract

The effect of the implementation of the School Literacy Movement on the reading skills of grade III students at SDN 2 Matangaji is the main focus of this study. The research background is based on differences in reading competence between students, both in the aspects of reading fluency, simple word recognition, pronunciation of consonants and vowels, and understanding the content of reading. The quantitative approach was applied through a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design, with 21 students as a sample. Data collection was carried out using reading competency tests before and after treatment and observation of literacy activities that took place. Treatment is given in the form of reading habits for fifteen minutes before the learning begins and combined with learning Indonesian on the main idea, material and supporting ideas. The results of data processing proved that the average value before treatment reached 69.31 and increased to 84.55 after treatment was given. The Shapiro–Wilk normality test shows that the posttest and pretest data are distributed normally. In addition, the research instrument has good reliability, as shown by Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.783 in the pretest and 0.979 in the posttest. According to the results of the paired sample t-test, a significance value was obtained below 0.05 until there was a significant difference between reading competence after and before treatment. These findings prove that the implementation of the School Literacy Movement is effective in optimizing students' reading competence.

Abstract

The distribution transformer at PD0681 substation of PT PLN (Persero) ULP Ampera experienced an overload condition that could accelerate insulation aging and reduce the reliability of the electrical distribution system. This study aimed to analyze the transformer loading during peak load conditions and determine an appropriate solution based on SPLN No. 50 of 1997. The analysis was carried out using field measurements of current and voltage on each phase. The results showed that the transformer loading reached 105.74% of its rated capacity of 100 kVA, indicating an overload condition. As a solution, an uprating simulation was performed by increasing the transformer capacity to 160 KVA, which reduced the loading level to 66.09%, placing it within the safe operating range. In addition, load growth was projected using the Least Square method, showing that the transformer loading would reach 76.11% in 2030, which is still within the acceptable operating limit according to the applicable standard. Therefore, transformer uprating is considered an effective technical solution to improve the reliability and continuity of long-term power distribution.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of using digital comics as a learning medium on the reading skills of third-grade students at SDN 1 Pejambon. This study was motivated by the limited variety of learning media used and the disparities in reading skills observed among students in the classroom, particularly in terms of reading fluency, pronunciation clarity, and comprehension of the text. The approach used was a quantitative method with a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, involving 20 third-grade students as research subjects. Data collection was conducted using reading test instruments and observation sheets covering indicators of letter and word recognition, reading fluency, clarity of pronunciation, and reading comprehension. Data analysis was performed using both descriptive and inferential methods with the aid of IBM SPSS software, version 27. The results revealed an increase in students’ average scores, from 73.50 in the pretest phase to 89.50 in the posttest phase. The results of the paired t-test confirmed that the difference between the scores before and after the intervention was significant, with t (19) = -12.426, p < 0.001, and an average increase of 16 points. These findings indicate that the use of digital comics is effective in improving students’ reading skills while making the reading learning process in elementary school more engaging.

Abstract

Oral exfoliative cytology is a non-invasive diagnostic method widely used to evaluate morphological changes in oral mucosal epithelial cells. The quality of cytological preparations is influenced by several pre-analytical factors, including the air-drying time before Diff-Quik staining. This study aimed to determine the effect of different air-drying times on the staining quality of oral mucosal epithelial smears using the Diff-Quik method. A descriptive experimental design was employed with four air-drying time groups: 0, 5, 10, and 15 minutes. A total of 24 buccal smear preparations obtained from six healthy volunteers were evaluated. Slide quality was assessed based on nuclear clarity, cytoplasmic characteristics, and nuclear-cytoplasmic contrast using an objective scoring system. The results showed that all treatment groups achieved total scores ranging from 7 to 9, indicating good staining quality. The 0- and 5-minute air-drying groups produced the most optimal staining results, demonstrating clearer nuclear and cytoplasmic details, whereas the 10- and 15-minute groups exhibited a slight reduction in staining contrast in several preparations without significant morphological alterations. In conclusion, air-drying times of up to 15 minutes still produced cytological preparations with good staining quality, although 0–5 minutes provided the most optimal Diff-Quik staining results.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health requires strategic interventions through Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in schools. However, the mental health content in PAI textbooks has not yet been systematically mapped. This study aims to extract mental health content from six units of analysis, namely the official PAI textbooks for junior high and senior high school levels (Grades VII–XII) under the Merdeka Curriculum. The method used was concept-based qualitative content analysis (QCA) with a hierarchical framework integrating six dimensions of Psychological Well-Being and eight categories of Tazkiyatun Nafs (a total of 14 categories). The results indicate that mental health content is integrated through the six dimensions of Psychological Well-Being and the eight categories of Tazkiyatun Nafs. The distribution of material is gradual: at the junior high school level, the emphasis is on intrapersonal aspects, while at the senior high school level, the focus is on autonomy and the prevention of risky behaviors. However, a representation discrepancy was found: the aspects of spiritual resilience and behavioral control have reached Level 3 (Practice & Evaluation), while self-acceptance and purpose in life remain at Level 2 (Conceptual). The implications of this study underscore the need to transform PAI curriculum materials from normative narratives into practical tools that align spiritual values with mental health literacy, as well as to optimize the “Mari Bermuhasabah” rubric as a medium for psychosocial reflection to bridge the pedagogical gap in the dimension of acceptance.

Abstract

The development of Islamic-based schools requires principals who can integrate effective leadership with Islamic values to foster a supportive learning environment and strengthen students’ character. This study aims to analyze the principal’s leadership style in developing an Islamic-based school at SMPI PK Muhammadiyah Delanggu. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the principal applies democratic, visionary, transformational, and Islamic leadership styles. Democratic leadership is reflected in participatory decision-making and transparent management. Visionary leadership is demonstrated through innovative programs, including Tahsinand Tahfiz Al-Qur’an, Esmide Got Talent (EGT), the English Communication Program (ICP), and psychological counseling services. Transformational leadership encourages teacher motivation, collaboration, and continuous school improvement. Islamic leadership is embedded in the school culture through regular religious activities and character education based on Islamic values. Although challenges remain, including differences in teachers’ religious commitment, students’ character development, and parental understanding, these are addressed through participatory and value-based leadership. The study concludes that integrating these leadership styles effectively strengthens Islamic school culture and supports students’ academic, moral, and spiritual development.
