Abstract

Red betel (Piper ornatum) is an ornamental plant with potential antibacterial and antioxidant properties due to its bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, triterpenoids, saponins, and tannins. This study aimed to determine the relationship between flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial activity in red betel leaves. Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) was employed using three solvents of varying polarity: n-hexane (non-polar), ethyl acetate (semi-polar), and ethanol (polar). Total flavonoid content was determined spectrophotometrically based on flavonoids' ability to form complexes with AlCl3. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method. Antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) tests. MIC was determined using the agar dilution method, while ZOI was measured using the disc diffusion method. Results showed that the 96% ethanol extract yielded the highest flavonoid content (4.748%) and the strongest antioxidant activity (IC50 = 47.185 ppm, classified as very strong). The n-hexane extract at 25% concentration exhibited the best antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans (ZOI = 17.43 mm), while the 96% ethanol extract at 25% concentration demonstrated the highest antifungal activity against Candida albicans (ZOI = 17.02 mm). In conclusion, red betel leaf extracts show promising potential as strong antioxidants and antimicrobial agents against C. albicans and S. mutans.

Abstract

Transgender and gender non-binary (TGD) youth face complex psychosocial challenges, including increased risk of mental health disorders due to gender identity incongruence with biological characteristics. One approach used to support the gender affirmation process is through medical interventions in the form of hormone therapy and other medical procedures. This article aims to review the scientific evidence related to the benefits and risks of medical interventions in TGD youth, with a focus on short-term and long-term impacts on mental health, physical health, and quality of life. The method used is a systematic literature review with a critical analysis of various scientific publications from international journals indexed by Scopus and PubMed over the past ten years. The results of the review indicate that medical interventions, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, have the potential to provide significant benefits in reducing gender dysphoria and improving mental health in the short term. However, there is limited evidence regarding safety and long-term effects, including risks to bone mineral density, cognitive function, and potential fertility disorders. In addition, there is variation in policies between countries in implementing these medical interventions, reflecting differences in ethical, legal, and cultural perspectives. The conclusion of this article emphasizes the need for a holistic, evidence-based approach that takes into account psychosocial aspects and individual human rights in providing health services to TGD adolescents. Longitudinal studies with stronger designs are urgently needed to understand the long-term impact of medical interventions and support appropriate clinical decision-making. These findings are expected to be a reference for health practitioners, policy makers, and the community in understanding health care issues for transgender and gender non-binary adolescents.

Abstract

In recent decades, women’s participation in sports has grown significantly, reaching near parity with men in major competitions such as the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, this progress has not been mirrored in sports science research, where women remain underrepresented both as research subjects and academic leaders. This study aims to analyze the gender gap in sports science research, particularly regarding female athletes, by conducting a descriptive qualitative study using a literature review approach. Data were collected from reputable academic journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, as well as official reports from international sports organizations. Thematic analysis was used to categorize findings into key themes, including injury risks, nutritional disparities, and scientific leadership. The results show that only 6% to 9% of sports science studies exclusively focus on female athletes, while female participation in mixed studies ranges from 35% to 39%. Furthermore, female leadership in scientific publications remains below 30%. This underrepresentation creates a significant knowledge gap, leading to biased recommendations in training, nutrition, and injury prevention, as most guidelines are based on male physiology. The study also highlights the higher risk of injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, among female athletes, often overlooked in research that ignores hormonal fluctuations like the menstrual cycle. Initiatives such as the Female Athlete Science and Translational Research (FASTR) and the Global Alliance for Female Athletes (GAFA) have been launched to address these disparities, yet broader support is needed. In conclusion, increasing women’s representation in research and leadership is crucial to developing inclusive, evidence-based practices that better support female athletes’ health and performance.

Abstract

Sports participation in adults is an important component in maintaining individual health and well-being, but participation rates tend to decline with age, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia. This study aims to analyze factors that influence sports participation in adults using a socio-ecological model approach. Using a qualitative descriptive method through a case study design, this study involved 15-20 adult participants aged 25-60 years with varying levels of sports participation. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that sports participation was influenced by complex interactions of various levels of factors: (1) individual level (health motivation, self-perception of ability), (2) interpersonal level (social support, cultural norms), (3) organizational level (availability of facilities, welfare programs), (4) community level (supporting infrastructure, environmental safety), and (5) public policy level (physical activity promotion programs). This study concludes the importance of a multi-level and integrated approach to increasing adult sports participation by considering the socio-cultural context of Indonesia. Recommendations include developing educational programs, establishing sports communities, providing easily accessible facilities, developing safe public spaces, and formulating policies that support sports infrastructure and public awareness campaigns.

Abstract

This study examines the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of Indonesian herbal medicine. Indonesia, as a megabiodiversity country with more than 6,000 species of medicinal plants, has great potential in the development of herbal medicine, but is constrained by a long research process, high costs, and low success rates. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach through literature studies with content analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that AI integration can accelerate the drug development process, reducing the time from 10-15 years to a few months, and reducing costs from USD 2.8 billion to USD 500 million - 1 billion. The ConvNeXt model achieved 92.8% accuracy in the classification of Indonesian medicinal plants, proving its effectiveness as a tool for documentation and preservation of biodiversity. The AI-based virtual screening technique successfully predicted the pharmacological potential of bioactive compounds without requiring early in vitro/in vivo tests. Challenges in implementing AI include limitations of integrated local databases, gaps in multidisciplinary collaboration, inadequate computing infrastructure, and ethical aspects related to indigenous peoples' rights and Intellectual Property Rights. This study recommends strategies to strengthen the AI research ecosystem through the development of a national database, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration, increasing infrastructure and human resource capacity, strengthening regulations, and public advocacy and education.
