Abstract

General elections provide the Election Commission (KPU) with an opportunity to educate the public on actively participating in the political process. Public political participation in general elections is not only about exercising their voting rights or mobilizing masses for the interests of election participants, but also about expressing their political awareness in determining the direction of government policies through the vision, mission, and programs of election participants. Public political awareness can be cultivated through voter education organized by the KPU. As a result, voter education has a positive implication in building a participatory political culture among the public and managing political polarization by equipping people with the knowledge to become rational voters. Rational voters indirectly influence societal consensus and social cohesion towards the government.

Abstract

This article explores the representation of symbols in Wolfgang Borchert’s short story Nachts schlafen die Ratten noch, which reflects the social and psychological conditions of post-war German society. The story portrays trauma, grief, and subtle hope through simple yet powerful symbols. Symbols such as urban ruins, rats, and characters are analyzed to uncover deeper meanings related to themes of trauma, humanity, and hope. This study adopts a qualitative approach, using literature review as the primary method. Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of signs provide the theoretical foundation to examine how symbols construct meaning. The analysis reveals that the symbols in this short story not only reflect post-war realities but also convey universal humanistic messages. Through this approach, the article highlights the essential role of symbolism in literature as a medium for expressing emotions, collective experiences, and social meanings that cannot always be conveyed explicitly.

Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of consonant systems in Mandarin and Indonesian, employing a descriptive-comparative approach. Data were collected through a theoretical literature review, focusing on consonant classification by place and manner of articulation, voicing, and phonotactic distribution. The results reveal that while both languages share similarities in bilabial, alveolar, and velar consonants, as well as stop, fricative, and nasal articulations, their differences are more pronounced. Mandarin exhibits unique features such as phonemic aspiration contrasts, retroflex consonants (/zh/, /ch/, /sh/), and alveopalatal sounds (/j/, /q/, /x/), which are absent in Indonesian. Conversely, Indonesian permits a more flexible coda system (/p/, /t/, /k/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /r/, /l/) compared to Mandarin, which only allows /n/ and /ŋ/. The analysis highlights learning challenges, particularly for Indonesian speakers mastering Mandarin’s aspirated and retroflex consonants. These findings carry pedagogical implications for language instruction, speech therapy, and second language acquisition, emphasizing the need for targeted pronunciation training. This research contributes to phonological typology and offers practical insights for applied linguistics. Keywords: consonants, phonology, comparative, Mandarin, Indonesian

Abstract

Polysemy in semantic studies refers to a linguistic phenomenon in which a single word has multiple related meanings. In Mandarin, the verb 打 (dǎ) is a commonly encountered polysemous word in basic Mandarin language learning. This study aims to analyze the various meanings of the verb 打 (dǎ) using a qualitative approach, focusing on its contextual usage. Using the Qiandao Ribao (《千岛日报》) newspaper, edition of December 1, 2023, as the primary data source, this study identifies the semantic variations of 打 (dǎ) based on its collocations and surrounding context. The findings reveal that 打 (dǎ) has 19 diverse meanings, ranging from physical actions and communication to abstract expressions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of polysemy in Mandarin and enriches insights into the cognitive processes involved in meaning interpretation in foreign language learning. It is hoped that this study will serve as a significant reference in the semantic course, particularly in analyzing polysemous verbs like 打 (dǎ), which will become an analytical study material for students.
