Abstract

The food micro, small, and medium enterprises in Blitar face significant challenges in managing various business risks, including financial, operational, and strategic risks, which often hinder business continuity and growth. This study aims to enhance the risk management capabilities of food business actors in Blitar through a structured training program based on the international ISO 31000 standard. The training was delivered using lectures, discussions, and case studies, and its effectiveness was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick Level 2 method by comparing participants’ understanding before and after the training. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test questionnaires covering key aspects of risk management knowledge and practical application. The results demonstrate a substantial improvement in participants’ comprehension, with the average score increasing from 1.85 before the training to 3.65 after the training. The most significant gains were observed in the practical use of risk matrices and the identification of major risk categories, while the smallest improvement was found in the area of financial record separation, which already had a high baseline understanding. These findings indicate that the training was effective in increasing both conceptual and practical understanding of risk management among food business actors in Blitar. It is concluded that systematic risk management training based on international standards can significantly strengthen the resilience and sustainability of micro, small, and medium enterprises in the local food sector.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the sustainability of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially in rural areas. Weak financial management and minimal use of digital technology are two main obstacles that exacerbate the condition of MSMEs in facing the crisis. This community service activity aims to increase the capacity of MSME actors in fostered villages through applicable and sustainable financial management and digital marketing training. The training method is carried out in a participatory and practical manner, involving 25 MSME actors from various sectors. The evaluation was carried out using a quantitative and qualitative approach to measure changes in participants' understanding and skills before and after training. The results showed a significant increase in aspects of understanding financial management (from 35% to 85%), financial recording skills (from 25% to 80%), understanding digital marketing (from 30% to 90%), and skills in using social media for business promotion (from 20% to 88%). In addition, participants showed increased confidence in managing their businesses more professionally and based on data. These findings indicate that integrated training that combines financial and digital aspects can strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of MSMEs post-pandemic. The recommendation from this activity is the importance of continued mentoring and ongoing support from the village government and educational institutions to maintain the sustainability of the training impact.

Abstract

The website and online store training for SMEs in the Kolam Rural Area aimed to enhance the digital capacity of entrepreneurs in marketing their products online. The activity involved 20 SME owners who were taught how to create websites, integrate products into e-commerce platforms, and apply basic digital marketing techniques through social media and SEO. The results of the training showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge of utilizing technology to grow their businesses. Despite challenges related to limited digital infrastructure, participants successfully created and managed their websites and online stores. This training provides a strong foundation for SMEs to expand their market reach and improve their competitiveness. Going forward, further training and improvements in digital infrastructure are essential to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of SMEs in rural areas.

Abstract

Nutritional problems in infants and toddlers are still a serious challenge in health development in Indonesia, especially in areas with limited access to information and health services. This community service activity aims to conduct anthropometric measurements as an effort to detect the nutritional status of infants and toddlers early and provide nutritional education to parents in Laucih Village, Medan Tuntungan District. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students of the Nutrition Bachelor Study Program, North Sumatra Health Institute (INKESSUMUT) as part of the 2025 community service program initiated by the INKESSUMUT Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM).The methods used include measuring weight, height/length, and upper arm circumference (LILA) of 45 toddlers using WHO standard measuring instruments. The data was then analyzed using the WHO Z-score reference to determine nutritional status. In addition to measurements, this activity also includes nutritional education to mothers of toddlers regarding the importance of balanced nutrition, correct feeding practices, and regular monitoring of child growth through Posyandu.The results of the activity showed that the majority of toddlers had good nutritional status (68.9%), but there were still cases of malnutrition (17.8%), severe malnutrition (4.4%), and risk of stunting (8.9%). These findings indicate the need for further intervention and assistance to families who have children with problematic nutritional status. The nutrition education provided was also well received by the community and was able to increase parents' understanding of parenting and feeding patterns. This community service activity shows the effectiveness of collaboration between higher education institutions and the community in supporting the national program to accelerate the reduction of stunting. In the future, similar activities need to be continued with a more comprehensive and sustainable approach, including training of cadres and utilization of local data for planning nutritional interventions. This community service is also a real form of implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in the field of community service which has a direct impact on community welfare.

Abstract

Character education serves as a crucial foundation for shaping young generations with integrity, particularly amidst the challenges of globalization. This community service initiative aims to strengthen the character of students at SD Negeri Panaikang 3 by leveraging the local wisdom of South Sulawesi. A participatory approach was implemented, engaging 27 second-grade students through socialization sessions, workshops, and practical actions (waste sorting). Evaluation results revealed that 87% of students demonstrated a good understanding of the material, while 13% showed adequate comprehension. This activity proves that local wisdom can serve as an effective medium for instilling values of environmental care, mutual cooperation, and responsibility.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, particularly in the Medan Skip area, still face various challenges in managing their business finances effectively and efficiently. Problems such as mixing personal and business finances, not recording daily transactions, and not knowing how to prepare simple financial reports are major obstacles to their business development. This community service activity aims to improve the financial management capacity of MSMEs through intensive training and direct field mentoring. The methods used in this activity included identifying training needs, developing participatory training modules, implementing three days of interactive training, and providing one month of mentoring. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests, as well as field observations and interviews. The results of the activity showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding and practice of financial management. Approximately 78% of participants were able to prepare simple financial reports, and 84% had separated personal and business finances. Furthermore, participants became more disciplined in recording daily transactions and began implementing short-term financial planning. In conclusion, financial management training tailored to local needs and contexts can improve MSME business efficiency. This activity also encourages changes in managerial behavior and strengthens the business foundation in facing future economic challenges.

Abstract

The financial recording capability of small business actors remains limited due to the lack of understanding and skills in basic accounting practices. This service program was designed to address that problem by enhancing the knowledge and practical competence of micro and small entrepreneurs in implementing simple and structured financial bookkeeping. The purpose of this activity was to empower business owners to independently manage their financial records for better decision-making and business sustainability. The applied method in this activity was an educative and participatory approach, consisting of three stages: initial needs assessment through interviews and observations, implementation of interactive training and direct practice using real transaction cases, and evaluation using pre- and post-tests, observations, and interviews. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ abilities to manage cash records, prepare basic financial reports, and utilize spreadsheet tools effectively. Participants also showed behavioral changes in adopting routine bookkeeping and separating business finances from personal expenses. This program proved to be effective in building a new financial culture among participants, both in the short term and with potential long-term benefits. The activity concluded that targeted and practice-based training can significantly improve financial literacy and management among small-scale business owners.

Abstract

Environmental education is a crucial aspect in shaping a generation responsible for environmental sustainability, with the Adiwiyata Program being a strategic initiative in Indonesia to achieve this goal. The Adiwiyata Program encourages schools to create a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, and to instill an environmental culture through real practices involving all school elements. One modern agricultural method that can be effectively integrated into environmental education in schools is hydroponic cultivation. Hydroponics, as a soilless farming technique utilizing nutrient-rich solutions in water, offers efficiency in water and land use, and reduces the risk of pests and diseases. These advantages make it ideal for schools with limited land or those wishing to maximize space utilization. SMK Gelora Jaya Nusantara Medan, as a vocational institution, has great potential to implement hydroponics as part of Adiwiyata, especially given the challenge of limited green space in urban Medan. Hydroponic training can equip students and teachers with technical knowledge, foster environmental awareness, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance through active involvement in cultivation. This initiative aligns with the Adiwiyata vision to create an environmentally cultured school environment and produce graduates who care about global issues. Hydroponic projects also teach about the water cycle, plant nutrition, and the positive impacts of sustainable agriculture on food security and climate change mitigation. This community service discusses the implementation and impact of hydroponic training at SMK Gelora Jaya Nusantara Medan as a concrete step towards becoming an Adiwiyata School, and analyzes the increased environmental awareness within the school community.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly in densely populated areas with low awareness of environmental disease prevention. This community service activity aimed to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the prevention and control of DHF through health education and counseling in the working area of the Pujidadi Sub-Health Center, Binjai City. The activity was conducted by lecturers from the Master of Public Health Program, Institute of Health Sciences of North Sumatra (INKESSUMUT), as part of the 2024 community service program organized by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) INKESSUMUT. Methods included interactive lectures, small group discussions, and practical simulations of mosquito breeding site eradication (PSN) using the 3M Plus approach. Educational materials such as leaflets, posters, and visual aids were used to support learning. Target participants included housewives, health cadres, and local youth. The results showed improved community understanding of DHF symptoms, transmission methods, and the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness as a preventive measure. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and expressed commitment to adopting clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS) and continuing PSN activities regularly. This initiative highlights the effectiveness of community-based educational approaches in enhancing disease prevention efforts and represents a practical implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education in improving public health.

Abstract

The availability of clean water is a basic need that is vital for public health and well-being. However, communities living along the Deli Riverbanks in Medan face serious air quality issues due to household and industrial waste pollution. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to implement a simple clean water filtration technology that can be built with local materials, is easy to operate, and is affordable for lowland communities. The methods used include an initial air quality survey, training in building the filtration system, installation of units in residents' homes, and technical and social evaluations. The filtration system uses layered media consisting of palm fiber, gravel, fine sand, and activated charcoal in a plastic drum container. Laboratory tests showed that this system effectively reduced air turbidity from 78 NTU to 4 NTU and eliminated Escherichia coli contamination to 0 MPN/100 ml, approaching the national clean water quality standard. In addition to the technical aspects, this activity also had an impact on increasing community awareness of the importance of clean water and healthy lifestyles. The community satisfaction level with the quality of the filtered water reached over 90%, and the majority expressed a desire to replicate the system independently. This activity demonstrates that locally based appropriate technology can be an effective solution in addressing clean water problems in poor urban areas, as well as strengthening community capacity and independence in managing water resources sustainably.
