Abstract

Language and culture could not be learned and taught separately. Therefore, a learning material based on culture should be considered for a meaningful instructional process. This study is aimed to develop a culture based textbook for academic purpose using a model of teaching language and culture. This model includes language  knowledge, language  awareness,  culture  awareness,  and  culture  experience. The first step (need assessment) concerning the need to develop a culture based textbook was done in the previous study by Zuchdi and Nurhadi (2019), while the level of students language competence and their cultural interest was done in the beginning of this study. This study was the development of an intercultural based textbook through these following procedures: defining objectives, identifying culture topics, developing materials and media of instruction, content layout and graphic design, internal and external review, try out for product validation, and developing final draft. Based on the survey, the majority of respondents were in level 3 and 4  of  Indonesian  language  competence,  so  this  textbook  was developed for that levels. The respondents were students taking Indonesian language program in Ahmad Dahlan University in Yogyakarta. The data were collected using pretest-postest and instructor's reflection, and then analyzed by finding out the difference between the scores category. Almost half of the pretest scores were in the low and medium category, while all of the postest scores were in the high category. Based on the the instructor's reflection, the students were really involving to study using this textbook. It can be concluded that the culture based Indonesian language textbook for academic purpose is effective for teaching and learning Indonesian as a foreign language.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation model of instilling Islamic characters at SMP-SMA Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah Boarding School Purwokerto. This study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing observation, interviews, and document analysis as data collection techniques. The collected data are then analyzed to understand the character education model at Al-Irsyad. The research findings indicate that the formation of Islamic characters at SMP-SMA Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah Boarding School Purwokerto is conducted through Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subjects, which include Akhlaq (ethics), Aqidah (creed), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and Tarikh Islam (Islamic history) as the learning materials. The Akhlaq lesson aims to promote honesty, integrity, and noble character for the students while eliminating feelings of envy. Meanwhile, the specific goal of Islamic character formation is instilled through Aqidah lesson. The Aqidah curriculum directs students to avoid practices in Islam that are considered deviant from monotheism, such as acts of shirk (polytheism), Tawassul (seeking intercession), and Tabarruk (seeking blessings). Some implications of this understanding result in Al-Irsyad not allowing the students to "salute the red-and-white flag" or "observe a moment of silence" during flag ceremonies. Additionally, the Al-Irsyad students are not permitted to sing the national song "Padamu Negeri," as this song negates Allah's presence. Such practices typically occur due to a textual interpretation and understanding of Islamic sources, the Qur'an, and Hadith.

Abstract

The Philippine Department of Education developed and has been implementing the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) policy in response to encouraging findings from earlier research studies on using the mother tongue in early education. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how the MTB-MLE Policy is being implemented in terms of classroom instruction, teacher and school readiness, and student proficiency in their mother tongue, Kapampangan, and mathematics in the first five years of implementation in the Sasmuan District of Pampanga, Philippines, using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design. Teachers rated the implementation of the MTB-MLE policy positively but experienced some difficulties. Data analysis from interviews with teachers, school heads, district supervisors, and class observations revealed some issues, concerns, coping strategies, and best practices. The results of the two achievement exams students took were satisfactory, providing evidence of the value of using their native tongues in the classroom amidst challenges. Implications of the results were drawn for further improvement in the practice of the MTB-MLE policy in Mathematics Education.

Abstract

This work aims to identify effective means of distance learning methods for developing pedagogical competence among student-teachers. To achieve this goal, the study applies various methods and approaches, including dialectical and functional methods, alongside analysis and synthesis, pedagogical observation, comparison, and classification. The research employed these methodologies to analyze existing literature and explore best practices in distance learning for teacher training. The research yielded significant theoretical and practical contributions. The theoretical foundation strengthens the understanding of how distance learning can foster pedagogical competence. The practical value lies in its potential application as both instructional and methodological material for training future teachers. It can also serve as a tool for practicing educators to improve their skills by familiarizing them with effective distance learning tools and strategies. Future research should explore the evolution of distance learning methods in teacher training, identify potential shortcomings of distance learning approaches, and propose effective solutions to overcome these limitations.

Abstract

As the world has shifted dramatically, university graduates must possess hard and soft skills to compete in the job market and thrive in the competitive era of 5.0. Strong communication skills, encompassing speaking, listening, observing, and empathizing, are essential for success in this competitive environment. This paper aims to elaborate on implementing a simple classroom activity called "Show and Tell" to encourage students to communicate freely. The show-and-tell activity was modified to meet the needs of university-level students. The study involved 120 students from the civil engineering, law, and architecture departments of Musamus University of Merauke, with 53 female and 67 male students. This research utilized a qualitative approach to understand the learners' development better. The data collection methods in the field included field notes, audio-video recordings, and interviews with the learners. The results indicate that while students' English competencies were generally at a beginner level, the "show and tell" activity significantly enhanced their confidence and communication skills. Participants reported feeling more at ease when speaking in front of their peers, leading to improved articulation and organization of thoughts. Simultaneously, the activity also fostered empathy and a supportive learning environment, as students connected emotionally with their classmates.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the sudden transition of teaching and learning from the perspectives of the teacher educators and students of an education graduate faculty in one of the universities in Brunei Darussalam. During the first COVID-19 outbreak in the country, higher education institutions shifted the conventional teaching and learning approach from mostly face-to-face to fully online teaching and learning. The online questionnaires were distributed to the teaching staff and students via email and the response rate of the online questionnaires for teacher educators and students was 88% and 57.6% respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data where frequency and percentage were then utilised to describe the patterns of the responses. It was found that half of the teacher educators and students perceived there were more interactions through online teaching activities between the teaching staff and their students. However, both staff and students mentioned that their physical and mental wellbeing were also affected due to the sudden transition to online teaching and learning.

Abstract

Evidence has shown that social and emotional learning (SEL) improves students' behavior, attitudes, peer relationships, and academic outcomes. However, teachers have challenges in promoting SEL due to insufficient professional development and pedagogical strategies. Cooperative learning, a pedagogy promoting student-centered learning, has been suggested to help teachers foster students' SEL. However, little research has been conducted to investigate cooperative learning alignment with SEL. Thus, this current study explores teachers' perspectives on implementing cooperative learning to promote students' SEL. Seven elementary school teachers implementing cooperative learning and SEL in their classrooms joined the study. A qualitative interpretative case study design was used. Teacher interviews as primary data, and field notes, teachers' artefacts, lesson plans, and teaching videos were collected. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data from the teacher interviews and field notes. Four themes were generated: group roles, exploring potentials and weaknesses, meaningful interactions, and consensus decision-making. The findings suggest that cooperative learning through clear group roles promotes elementary school students' self-awareness and social awareness, meaningful interactions, and consensus decision-making.

Abstract

In the context of art as a language, ornament also functions as a visual language, because in Javanese culture there is a tradition to express an idea, expression, and moral message containing learning about noble morals through ornamentation.  This paper aims to analyze what are the noble moral-based learning contained in ornaments in Kraton Yogyakarta and what influenced them. Data were obtained through field observation, interviews, and literature studies. The results showed that the decorative figural art and ornamentation in Javanese culture are not only visually captivating but also convey profound cultural, religious, and moral meanings, making them an essential part of the Javanese cultural heritage. The visual narrative of ornaments was mainly influenced by cultural acculturation in Javanese society, while noble character-based learning was the result of religious syncretism and belief in Javanese culture.

Abstract

This study aims to compare how students learn archery skills in terms of physiological ability factors arising from first, middle, and last shots. Arm muscular strength is one physiological ability aspect that affects archery skills. Physical fitness has a big impact on archery success or accomplishment. This comparative quantitative study aims to ascertain how much student learning outcomes for archery skills vary or differ from one another. Thirty individuals from five different classes of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation (2019/2020) were sampled using the cluster random sampling method. Inferential one-way ANOVA descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis in this study, with a significance threshold of α 0.05. The research results show a difference in the average of the three archery skills learning outcomes for the students. The differences are between the outcomes of the first shot (encroachment), middle shot, and final shot. The results of Tukey's post hoc follow-up test indicated that (1) there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the average shot result (encroachment) between the first and the middle shots; (2) there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the average shot result (increase) between the first and the last shots; and (3) there is no significant difference (p < 0.05) in the average shot results between the middle shot and the last shot (p < 0.05).
