Abstract

The flash flood and landslide disaster in Mendale Village, Kebayakan District, Central Aceh caused environmental damage and social and psychological impacts on the community, especially vulnerable groups. The main post-disaster problems were limited understanding of the disaster, limited structured environmental recovery, and minimal ongoing psychosocial assistance. This community service activity aims to accelerate social and environmental recovery through community-participation-based disaster socialisation. The method used was a Service Learning approach with four stages: planning, socialisation, implementation, and evaluation. The activity involved approximately 40 participants, including village officials, community leaders, youth, housewives, and schoolchildren. The program included socialisation of disaster mitigation and preparedness, community service cleaning public facilities, psychosocial assistance for children through educational games and storytelling, and strengthening environmental resilience through planting family medicinal plants and vegetables in the village office area. Data were collected through observation, pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in community understanding of disasters from low to good and very good. Furthermore, the village environment became cleaner and more functional, community participation in community service activities increased, and children's anxiety symptoms decreased through trauma healing activities. These activities also fostered a collective community commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness and independently implementing disaster preparedness principles. These findings demonstrate that participatory disaster awareness campaigns are effective as a post-disaster social and environmental recovery strategy in disaster-prone rural areas.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen lecturers’ capacity to improve SINTA performance by transforming community-service activities into publishable outputs. Using a service-learning (SL) approach integrated with a publication pipeline, the program was implemented through (1) needs assessment and baseline mapping, (2) a core workshop on manuscript structure, ethical publication, journal/publisher selection, and reference management, (3) writing clinics and peer-review in small groups, and (4) finalization and submission planning. The activities were conducted in one main session followed by a short mentoring follow-up period (2–4 weeks). Results indicated improved participants’ writing literacy and manuscript quality, with most participants producing complete drafts and a substantial proportion reaching “submission-ready” status. The program implies a replicable model to accelerate credible scholarly dissemination and support SDG 4, 9, and 17.

Abstract

This community service program addressed post–hydro-meteorological disaster disruptions to safe water access in Rancong Village, Kuta Blang Subdistrict, Bireuen Regency, Aceh, where flooding and environmental contamination increased the risk of unsafe household water and hindered recovery of daily activities. The program aimed to restore access to safer drinking water and strengthen community capacity to operate and maintain the service through an integrated, appropriate-technology intervention. The implementation combined participatory action cycles with community co-design, student service-learning through an impact-oriented field program, and an asset-based approach to leverage local resources for sustainability. Activities were conducted in sequential stages: stakeholder coordination and joint decision-making, rapid needs and risk assessment of water sources, engineering design and installation of an integrated multi-stage emergency drinking water filtration unit, field functionality and performance testing using a before–after measurement approach, technology transfer through hands-on training, and development of standard operating procedures and an operation-and-maintenance logbook managed by the village team. The program produced key outputs: a validated baseline of local water risks and service needs; an installed filtration unit at a community-agreed location; community training and operational guidelines to ensure consistent daily use; and an agreed operation-and-maintenance mechanism to support continuity beyond the project period. Overall, the program demonstrated that pairing emergency water treatment technology with structured community governance and practical capacity building can accelerate post-disaster recovery of basic services and provide a replicable model for similar villages affected by flooding and related hazards.

Abstract

Rural communities often face interrelated problems in health, education, environmental sanitation, and local economic capacity, which hinder sustainable village development. Tunong Krueng Kala Village in Aceh Besar reflects this condition, where limited access to preventive health services, low educational support for children, inadequate environmental awareness, and underutilized local potential remain key challenges. This community service article aims to describe the implementation and outcomes of a multidisciplinary empowerment program designed to strengthen community capacity through locally relevant interventions. The program was conducted through a participatory community service approach involving situation analysis, problem identification, program planning, implementation, and evaluation. The target community consisted of village residents from different age and occupational groups, while the implementing team involved university students from multiple disciplines under academic supervision and in collaboration with village authorities and local community members. The activities included blood pressure screening and hypertension education, basic literacy support for children, educational games and history learning activities, nutrition-oriented local food processing using moringa leaves, livestock health education, and environmental awareness campaigns through hygiene education and community clean-up actions. The results show that the program produced positive responses and practical benefits across several sectors. In the health activity, blood pressure screening of 24 adult participants found that only 50% were in the normal category, while the rest were classified as pre-hypertensive to moderate-severe hypertensive, indicating the importance of early detection and health education at the village level. Educational activities increased children’s enthusiasm and participation in learning, while local food processing and livestock health activities improved community knowledge and opened opportunities for household-level application. Environmental activities also strengthened awareness of hygiene and collective responsibility for village cleanliness. Overall, the program demonstrates that multidisciplinary, local potential-based community service can serve as an effective model for strengthening rural community capacity and supporting sustainable development at the village level.

Abstract

Student entrepreneurship programs in higher education often face challenges related to limited practical experience, the ability to respond to market dynamics, and mental readiness to deal with business failure. This condition was also experienced by students and recent graduate tenants participating in EXSIS Ramadhan Universitas Syiah Kuala 2026, who were directly managing their businesses during the Ramadan period. This community service activity aimed to strengthen the entrepreneurial capacity of the tenants through a reflective mentoring program entitled Failed Business vs. Successful Business: From Failure to Business Success. The implementation method included problem identification, mentoring material design, online delivery through Zoom, interactive discussion, and evaluation based on observation and participant feedback. The results showed that the mentoring activity provided practical insights relevant to the tenants’ actual business problems, particularly in terms of promotion strategies, repeat orders, stock management, product quality, pricing, and operational discipline. The activity also strengthened participants’ understanding that business failure is part of the learning process and can be used to improve business strategies in a sustainable manner. Therefore, this mentoring activity contributed to strengthening the mindset, practical knowledge, and adaptive capacity of young entrepreneurs in the higher education environment.

Abstract

The rise of early-stage radicalism among youth has become a critical challenge in contemporary society, particularly in the context of rapid digital transformation and the spread of extreme ideologies through social media. This study aims to analyze the integration of wasathiyah (moderation) values within community service programs as a strategic effort to prevent radical tendencies from an early age. Employing a qualitative approach based on Creswell’s research design, this study utilizes a literature review method by examining various scholarly sources, policy documents, and relevant reports related to Islamic education, community empowerment, and deradicalization efforts. The findings reveal that the incorporation of wasathiyah values—such as tolerance, balance, justice, and inclusivity—into community service activities significantly contributes to fostering critical thinking, strengthening social cohesion, and building resilience against radical narratives among participants. Furthermore, community-based programs that emphasize participatory engagement, contextual religious understanding, and collaborative learning between educators, religious leaders, and local communities are proven to be more effective in internalizing moderate Islamic values. The study also highlights that early prevention through educational and social interventions is more sustainable compared to reactive approaches. Therefore, integrating wasathiyah principles into structured community service initiatives not only enhances religious moderation but also supports the development of a peaceful and harmonious society. This research underscores the importance of multidimensional strategies in addressing radicalism and recommends the continuous development of inclusive and adaptive community service models grounded in Islamic moderation values.
