Abstract

The initial objective of this report is to design a screw feeder system with a design that can uniform the flow of a product. In this study, coincidentally, there is a company in Malang that needs a tool to convey their product, which is fine salt. The design of this screw feeder is created using SolidWorks software, and for the chosen materials, acrylic plastic is used for the hopper with a minimum capacity of 10 kg, and nylon is used for the screw feeder. As for the electrical component, Omron's PLC program is used to operate the stepper motor as the driver for the screw feeder, and Arduino is used to display the weight measured by the load cell. After completing the design using SolidWorks, an analysis is conducted to determine the thickness of the acrylic for the hopper. The analysis results from SolidWorks show that a thickness of 4mm yields a deflection of 0.6 mm, a thickness of 6mm yields a deflection of 0.2 mm, and a thickness of 8mm yields a deflection of 0.007 mm. As for the thickness of the screw feeder thread from nylon, the analysis results from SolidWorks show that a 3 mm thread thickness yields a deflection of 0.008 mm, a 4 mm thickness yields a deflection of 0.004 mm, and a 5 mm thickness yields a deflection of 0.002 mm. In addition, the calculation results for the motor capacity indicate a torque of 6.897 Nm. After obtaining the ideal analysis and calculation data, the fabrication process is carried out. In conclusion, the main objective of this report is to achieve product flow uniformity using a screw feeder.

Abstract

PT.MJF is a pharmaceutical company engaged in livestock pharmaceuticals and produces several products. One of its sub-units is engaged in maintenance, producing vaccines, and sterilizing pharmaceutical equipment. Production activities in this sub-unit require a steam machine to sterilize livestock equipment; the machine is called an autoclave machine. The Autoclave-035 machine frequently experiences damage and malfunctions from 2019 to 2022, with a total of 41 breakdowns causing machine downtime. The purpose of this research is to find out the maintenance condition of PT.MJF and the effectiveness of the Autoclave-035 machine. The method used is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Six Big Losses. After conducting research, the average value of OEE is 91%. This result is good because it is above the world-class standard of 85%. It is known that the biggest losses that occur are reduced speed losses of 31.67% and equipment failure losses of 28.09% of the total losses. What causes the number of losses consists of machine, human, environmental, material, maintenance schedule, and energy factors. Machine and human factors are the most dominant factors.

Abstract

Advances in FDM-based 3D Printer technology must be made, especially in creating models that can be used to meet various needs. This research is a continuation of previous research that has produced a special design of the FDM-based CoreXY 3D Printer, which requires further development in design and process optimization to achieve optimal working parameters. Data collection carried out in this study was by the Design of Experiment method. The type of DoE method used is full factorial design, this type is a method that combines all levels of several factors tested. Factors are the main research variables, namely layer thickness and print speed. Furthermore, determine several levels that will be tested on each factor. The results show that the minimum shrinkage value and smooth and flawless results were produced in the 3rd experiment so the printing process with a layer thickness parameter of 0.1 mm with a printing speed of 60 mm/minute is the most appropriate parameter to produce the best print results.

Abstract

Flow control is used to determine the efficiency of fluid in a pipe. In this study, a fin bundle was placed downstream of the elbow to reduce the fluctuation of flow. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of flow control in the downstream elbow with apply fin bundle. The method is numerical simulation using software analysis of a plain pipe model, a four-blade fin bundle pipe model, six blade fin bundle pipe model, with discharge variations of 0.001 m3/s, 0.002 m3/s, 0.003 m3/s, 0.004 m3/s, 0.005 m3/s, and 0.006 m3/s. By simulation tests, the use of fin bundles was only effective in tests with a discharge of 0.001 m3/s and a discharge of 0.002 m3/s and became ineffective at discharges of 0.003 m3/s, 0.004 m3/s, 0.005 m3/s, and 0.006 m3/s; it caused losses due to backflow. The highest-pressure contour viewed is the 6-blade variation, with a value of 36 kPa. The highest velocity in the contour view is the 4-blade variation, with a value of 12.25 m/s. The lowest pressure drop in the contour view is the 6-blade fin bundle, with a value of 19 kPa; the lowest score of minor head loss in the contour view is the 6-blade fin bundle, with a value of 0.63. The research needs to improve the effect of the fin bundle, especially to modification form fin like variation of the blade, thickness, and length.

Abstract

One of alternatives for sheet material forming is using single point incremental forming (SPIF). This process is suitable for small-scale sheet metal product manufacturing because it can be done on a CNC Milling machine. There is few research has been done in SPIF with the simple feature products like spherical shape, pyramid shape, and cone shape. This research focuses to make a product with complex shape begins with product identification, make an CAM tool path for SPIF, simulate the CAM program into LS-Dyna, and do the SPIF on the CNC Milling Machine. The simulation using LS-Dyna software first conducted to evaluate the effect of step depth and feed rate on the shape, the thinning, and the von misses stress of the product. The full factorial design is used to analyze the effect of those parameters. Result shows the parameters that produce a shape close to the original shape of the product are feed rate 500 mm/rev and step depth 0.35 mm, for the thinning is feed rate 500 mm/rev and step depth 0.2 mm, for von-misses stress is feed rate 500 mm/rev and step depth 0.4 mm. The parameters results will be used as a reference for the SPIF on the machine.

Abstract

Research on two-phase flow in microchannels has developed rapidly and been applied in various industrial fields, focusing on the unique characteristics of gas-liquid two-phase flow, including the influence of changes in cross-sectional area and rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids on flow patterns and pressure drop. This research was conducted with an experimental approach involving direct observation of two-phase flow behavior on a micro-scale. The gas working fluid used was nitrogen, and the liquid working fluid used was XG (Xanthan Gum) with a concentration of 0.1%. The superficial velocities of gas (jG) and liquid (jL) were varied in the range of 0.66 - 20 m/s and 0.1 - 1 m/s. The characteristics of the flow pattern formed were recorded by using a high-speed camera and analyzed by using the image processing method with the MATLAB application. The characteristic of the flow patterns was observed in the present study, including the length and velocity of a gas slug. The flow patterns that were obtained in this study are bubbly, slug-bubbly, slug, and slug-annular. At the same superficial velocity of gas and liquid, non-Newtonian fluids have higher slug velocities and shorter slug gas lengths compared to Newtonian fluids. The experimental data shows that the pressure drop increases by the jL.

Abstract

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is commonly used to install underground pipelines, particularly for river crossings or in highly populated areas, due to its minimal surface disruption. However, the usual analysis method provided by the Pipeline Research Council Institute (PRCI), which mainly focuses on pipeline safety, is raising concerns about the coating safety. To address this, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used alongside the PRCI method. The PRCI method is used to calculate theoretical loads and stresses, and the FEA is used to investigate the stresses in both the pipeline and the coating. The results were then compared to the HDD safety criteria. This combined method ensures the entire installation process’s safety and reliability. This paper presents the applications of this approach to the Kaligarang River crossing in Semarang as a case study. The results show that the safety criteria of the pipeline and the coating are fulfilled during its installation, operation, and hydrostatic testing.

Abstract

This study attempts to recover nickel from lateritic ore exploited from North Konawe, Celebes, applying the acid leaching method. Prior to acid leaching, the lateritic deposit of a given size (≤ 200 mesh) was heated in a furnace at 600°C to yield laterite concentrate. The acid leaching route applied 50 mg of a sample for 60 min. of leaching at varied given concentrations of nitric acid and given temperatures for 300 rpm stirring. The extracted nickel content was investigated applying AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). This work has examined the effect of varied nitric acid concentrations and temperatures on nickel recovery from laterite concentrate in aqueous solution. The yield showed that 4.0 M nitric acid at 70°C resulted in the highest nickel recovery, i.e., 35.80 mg/L or 3.58%. For the characterization study, XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) analyses were utilized to examine chemical elements and crystalline structure of the lateritic deposit. Statistical analysis applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test was used to assess a normal distribution of nickel recovery to be advantageous for further importance. Pearson correlation and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to reveal any significant correlation between nickel recovery, nitric acid concentration, and leaching temperature. The study verified that the acid leaching route gives benefit for nickel recovery from laterite concentrate on account of its simple, low-cost, and fast nature.

Abstract

Compact Heat Exchangers (CHE) are commonly used in various industries. Therefore, enhancing the performance of heat exchangers is crucial, one of which is by adding fins to the outer surface. This study focuses on the effect of fin spacing configuration on the heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient. The heat exchanger studied has sharp bends with a passage length of 300 mm, a bend length of 82 mm, and a total passage length of 5960 mm. The inner diameter of the tube (Di) is 20 mm, and the outer diameter of the tube (Do) is 22 mm. The type of fin used is a circular fin with a thickness of 0.3 mm and a fin height of 10 mm. The fin spacing variations are 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, and 70 mm. The working fluid is water at a temperature of 80°C, and heat transfer occurs as air passes through the heat exchanger at varying air velocities of 1.4 m/s, 2.1 m/s, and 2.4 m/s. The study results indicate that fin spacing significantly affects the heat exchanger's performance. The fin spacing of 50 mm was found to be optimal, with an average increase in the overall heat transfer rate of 1147 W at an air velocity of 1.4 m/s, 1212 W at an air velocity of 2.1 m/s, and 1272 W at an air velocity of 2.4 m/s. In addition, the overall heat transfer coefficient also increased by 73.6 W/m²K at an air velocity of 1.4 m/s, 77.8 W/m²K at an air velocity of 2.1 m/s, and 82.1 W/m²K at an air velocity of 2.4 m/s.

Abstract

A plastic extruder is a tool used with the extrusion process to change the shape of plastic shreds into filaments using high temperatures during the plastic melting process. The effect of temperature on the process of making filaments made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) using a plastic extruder machine and applying it to 3D printing. In making filaments, we usually use plastic pellets, including Polycaprolactone (PCL), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), and Polylactic Acid (PLA). Plastic pellets, especially PLA plastic pellets, have disadvantages, namely lower strength and durability, poor heat resistance, sensitivity to humidity, and post-process limitations. The purpose of making filaments is carried out with temperature variations of 110°C, 120°C, and 130°C to determine the optimal temperature that produces the best filament quality. in the printing process. The testing stages are literature study, determination of objects and pages, preparation of materials and machining, processes in making filaments (PLA), temperature settings, making 3D printing specimens, sample testing, and analysis. Conclusions to obtain optimal filament results are obtained through tensile testing. Before testing, the printing process was carried out using a 3D printing machine. After that, a tensile strength test was carried out to determine the mechanical strength of the filament produced. The results of this study showed that the extrusion temperature of 110°C is the optimal temperature for making PLA filaments using a plastic extruder machine. Filaments produced at this temperature have higher mechanical strength values and better surface quality.
