Abstract

Contemporary Islamic legal studies are often marked by conceptual fragmentation, where law is examined separately as juridical norms, ethical values, or social practices. This condition raises a fundamental question regarding how the integrative character of Islamic legal thought can be adequately understood and articulated. This article positions itself as a normative–philosophical legal study with a qualitative and reflective character, employing conceptual and philosophy of law approaches to analyze Islamic legal thought as an integrative system. The study relies on secondary legal materials collected through library research and analyzed through conceptual-critical and dialogical methods. It proposes an integrative framework based on ontology, epistemology, and axiology. In this framework, Islamic law is examined ontologically as part of a relational and meaningful order of life, epistemologically as a dynamic process of legal knowledge formation involving revelation, reason, and social experience, and axiologically as a value-oriented practice grounded in justice, welfare, and moral responsibility. The discourse of Ius Integrum Nusantara is employed to situate this framework within the Nusantara context, not as a fixed legal theory, but as a dialogical orientation that connects Islamic legal thought with local legal experience, cultural plurality, and social practice. The main result demonstrates that the integration of norms, values, and social practices is not external to Islamic law, but constitutes a structural characteristic of Islamic legal thought itself. Within the discourse of Ius Integrum Nusantara, this integration opens possibilities for more reflective, context-sensitive, and culturally grounded approaches in contemporary Islamic legal studies

Abstract

This paper investigates the responses of mainstream Islamic mass organizations in Indonesia, NU and Muhammadiyah, to the emergence of Salafi and Wahhabi teachings in the digital realm that challenge their religious authority. Using Bourdieu’s perspective, the restatement of the religious understanding of these two organizations on social media is an attempt to strengthen their established powers in Indonesia while positioning Salafi and Wahhabi groups as newcomers. At the same time, this makes social media a new field in the contestation of religious authority in Indonesia. This study was conducted both online and offline. Online studies were conducted by taking inventory of several websites and discourses that have developed on various internet and social media platforms, while an offline study was conducted through field studies in West Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, and Banten, to investigate the figures and institutions associated with each mass organization, both structurally and culturally. The results show that these organizations have adopted different strategies to address the issue, where NU has reacted defensively, whereas Muhammadiyah has prioritized internal development and charitable activities.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of integrating ecotheological values within traditional Islamic educational institutions. Specifically, it investigates how students at the Minhajul Haq Islamic Boarding School in Indonesia transition from theoretical environmental jurisprudence to practical ecological spirituality through daily conventional agriculture and modern hydroponic activities. Employing a qualitative Husserlian phenomenological approach, this research systematically examines the students' lived experiences. Following a preliminary screening to purposively identify key informants, primary data collection combined semi-structured interviews, direct participant observations, macro-spatial aerial drone photography, and the visual documentation of micro-activities. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic coding approach assisted by NVivo 12 software. The findings reveal a paradigm shift towards applied ecotheology. Students are directly exposed to ecological management, where macro-spatial green design integrates seamlessly with micro-agricultural activities, facilitating the development of a holistic eco-spiritual identity that extends beyond traditional textual memorization. This research provides an actionable framework for the disciplines of the sociology of religion, environmental ethics, and Islamic educational management. Furthermore, the findings offer empirical insights for education policymakers and institutional administrators seeking to design and implement sustainable experiential learning models in religious boarding schools. By combining spatial visual data with micro-level phenomenological experiences, this study contributes to the contemporary discourse on Islamic environmental education, advancing beyond purely normative theological narratives.

Abstract

Radicalism in educational settings is a strategic issue that demands serious attention, especially amid the growing influence of religious ideologies that infiltrate through digital spaces and school social interactions. This study aims to map the levels of inclusiveness, religious moderation, tolerance, and national commitment in public schools in Denpasar City to understand their potential, strengths, and vulnerabilities in building Zero Radicalism Schools. This issue is vital because Bali is generally considered a region with a strong culture of tolerance, but this assumption may mask latent vulnerabilities that are not immediately apparent. The study employs a convergent mixed-methods design, combining quantitative surveys, interviews, observations, and document analysis across four public schools in Denpasar. Survey results indicate high levels of inclusiveness and religious moderation across all schools, while qualitative data highlight teachers as key actors in fostering a harmonious religious climate. Nevertheless, quantitative indicators related to anti-violence culture and interfaith literacy show fluctuating patterns, a finding further explained by qualitative evidence of uneven program implementation. These integrated findings suggest that Denpasar’s schools are well positioned to develop a Zero Radicalism School model, although improvements in digital literacy, peace education, and monitoring systems remain necessary.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of religious moderation policies across three state religious higher education institutions in Indonesia through the conceptual lenses of the Iceberg Model and Theory U. It aims to explore the visible practices and underlying institutional structures, behavioral patterns, and mental models that shape the implementation of religious moderation. A qualitative multiple-case study design was employed between July and September 2024. The study involved 200 purposively selected participants, comprising students, lecturers, and administrative staff from three participating institutions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, document analysis, and a descriptive questionnaire used to support data triangulation. Qualitative data were analyzed inductively using thematic analysis and subsequently interpreted through the Iceberg Model and Theory U. The findings indicate that the participating institutions adopted different approaches to implementing religious moderation. One institution demonstrated stronger formal institutional support through documented policies, dedicated organizational structures, and structured training programs, whereas the other institutions relied more on community engagement and everyday interactions within religiously diverse environments. Despite these differences, all institutions faced structural challenges, including limited inclusive facilities and insufficient institutional mechanisms to sustain interfaith engagement. The study concludes that effective implementation of religious moderation requires the integration of formal institutional governance with community-based learning and continuous organizational reflection. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of religious moderation as an institutional process and provide practical insights for strengthening governance and inclusive campus culture in religious higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the institutional reform of the Islamic correctional system in Aceh through the development of the Dayah Insaniah model. The research is motivated by the institutional gap between the objectives of Islamic criminal law under the Qanun Jināyat and the correctional practices currently implemented through the national penitentiary system. Using normative legal research integrated with sociological analysis, the study analyzes primary legal materials, including Law No. 11 of 2006 on the Governance of Aceh, Qanun No. 7 of 2013 concerning Jināyat Procedural Law, Qanun No. 6 of 2014 concerning Jināyat Law, and Aceh Governor Regulation No. 5 of 2018, supported by secondary literature on Islamic criminal justice, correctional reform, and faith-based rehabilitation. The study identifies three principal findings. First, a structural inconsistency exists between the rehabilitative objectives of Islamic criminal law and the placement of Jināyat offenders in general correctional institutions. Second, the mandated UPTD Pembinaan under Aceh’s legal framework has not yet been established, creating an institutional vacuum in the post-sentencing rehabilitation process. Third, prison overcrowding and criminal mixing potentially undermine the correctional objectives of iṣlāḥ (reformation) and ta’dīb (moral development) envisioned by Islamic criminal law. Based on these findings, this study formulates the Dayah Insaniah model as an institutional framework integrating correctional functions, Islamic education, spiritual rehabilitation, and community participation. The model is analytically constructed through legal system theory, development law theory, and the principles of Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. The study contributes to the development of Islamic criminal justice by proposing a regionally grounded correctional model capable of aligning Islamic criminal law with rehabilitative institutional practice in Aceh.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure the level of faith-related contemplative response across natural and urban environmental contexts, addressing the scarcity of quantitative studies on this topic. The study adopted a quantitative descriptive approach using a 26-item questionnaire administered electronically to a sample of 134 participants. The findings revealed a high level of faith-related contemplative response in natural environments (M = 4.35, SD = 0.57), compared with a moderate level in urban environments (M = 2.79, SD = 0.70). No statistically significant differences were found according to place of residence (p > 0.05). The study contributes to the literature by providing a quantitative assessment of the relationship between environmental context and faith-related contemplative response, thereby expanding research at the intersection of environmental and faith-based studies.
