Abstract

This research aimed to empirically examine the role of academic self-efficacy and mindset on grit in civil engineering students. Grit is the persistence required by students in academic field to complete school, specifically at the stage of final project. A quantitative method was used with a correlational design to analyze 335 final year students of civil engineering program selected through proportional random sampling. Data analysis was carried out using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method. The results showed that academic mindset and self-efficacy had a significant effect on grit with a contribution of 26.2%, while the remaining 73.8% was influenced by other factors. This research reported the importance of psychological factors, such as mindset and self-efficacy, in increasing' persistence to compete long-term academic tasks.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of dark triad traits in the relationship between perceived parental monitoring and online deviant behavior among adolescents in Yogyakarta. A quantitative method was used, and data were collected from 308 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results showed that dark triad traits partially mediated the effect of perceived parental monitoring on online deviant behavior. Specifically, the indirect influence of perceived parental monitoring on online deviant behavior was mediated by machiavellianism (17.6%), narcissism (3.5%), and psychopathy (3.8%). Furthermore, increased perceived parental monitoring could reduce the tendency toward dark triad personality traits, thereby lowering the incidence of online deviant behavior among adolescents. This study recommended that parents improved their supervision to strengthen perceived parental monitoring, thereby reducing dark triad traits and preventing online deviant behavior.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the reading interests and habits of IFGCS and explore the context that impacts them. The research methodology was a descriptive phenomenology study. Data was collected through observation and in-depth interviews. Five participants qualified for collecting the data. Thematic analysis was applied and identified six primary themes and sixteen associated sub-themes as the finding. The main themes included the internal and external factors affecting reading activities, the preferred and least preferred types of books, the internal and external barriers influencing reading, the limited literacy support in the school and community of Timorese students, and economic and cultural challenges in reading within families. The implications of this research suggest recommendations that can be used by students, lecturers, higher education institutions, families, schools, communities, and local governments as microsystems, mesosystems, ecosystems, and macrosystems to foster reading interests and habits.

Abstract

Enhancing educational outcomes for underachieving gifted students, defined as those with an IQ ≥ 110 but mathematics scores below 80%, requires innovative teaching strategies. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) compared to conventional teaching for improving mathematics learning outcomes among underachieving gifted students. Using a experimental design with randomised pre-test and post-test groups, 60 students from class XII IPA at SMA Negeri 5 Surabaya were assigned to either the STAD (n=30) or control group (n=30). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent t-test. The STAD group achieved a mean gain score of 39.633, compared to 27.267 for the control group, with a significant difference (t(58) = 7.380, p <0.001, d =1.91). These findings suggest STAD is effective for enhancing mathematics performance in this Indonesian population, supporting its use in collaborative learning contexts. Further research should explore long-term effects and additional outcomes.

Abstract

Parental participation is crucial in developing early literacy skills in children, but publication on the combined contributions of both fathers and mothers remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how parental motivational beliefs, subjective norms, and perceived life context influence participation in early literacy activities, with parental expectations serving as a mediating factor. Anchored in Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the analysis adopted dyadic method through Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model (APIMeM), which examined both individual and partner effects. A time-lagged design was conducted with 507 father-mother dyads (N = 1014) across 10 kindergartens in Surabaya, Indonesia. The instruments used were carefully adapted to ensure cultural relevance and validity. The results showed that motivational beliefs, social norms, and perceived life context significantly predicted parental participation, with expectations mediating these relationships. This study underscored the importance of considering both parental psychosocial factors to strengthen early literacy support at home and guide the design of family-focused interventions.

Abstract

The determinants of adolescents' prosocial behavior prioritize the welfare of others. In this context, cooperation (gotong royong), as a reflection of prosocial behavior, is a core cultural value and part of Indonesian identity. This research aims to examine the role of empathy in mediating the relationship between peer social support and democratic parenting styles with adolescents' prosocial behavior. A quantitative survey was conducted using several instruments, namely Scenario-Based Prosocial Intention Questionnaire (SBPIQ), Empathy Scale, Parental Democratic Parenting Scale, and Peer Social Support Scale. This research included 621 adolescents aged 12–18 years in Semarang, selected through convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using CB-SEM with Mplus software version 8.3. The results showed that democratic parenting styles, peer social support, and empathy significantly influenced prosocial behavior. Furthermore, empathy played a mediating role in the relationship between parenting styles and peer support with adolescents' prosocial behavior.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the topics adolescents discuss with their parents, how frequently these conversations occur, and how important adolescents perceive them to be. The participants were 331 middle school students aged 12–16 years (53.8% girls, 46.2% boys), selected through convenience sampling. Data were gathered using a questionnaire covering four domains of sexual communication: developmental and social issues, sexual safety, sexual experiences, and sexual activities. We applied Friedman test on data from a related sample, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, the Mann-Whitney U test for comparing independent groups, and Spearman rank correlation. Results revealed that communication patterns differ between mothers and fathers. Mothers were more likely to discuss developmental and social issues, while fathers more often addressed sexual experiences. The findings highlight the need to enhance parent-adolescent communication about sexual matters.

Abstract

This study examines bullying profiles among perpetrators, victims, and bystanders in Bandung's junior and senior high schools, analyzing its relationships with demographic factors (gender, educational level, and age). A quantitative descriptive approach was used, with 1290 students ages 11-19 as participants. Data was collected using bullying instruments (perpetrator, victim, and bystander scales) developed by Maslihah et al. (2024), based on Salmivalli et al.'s (1996) bystander concept. Analysis included descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, and independent t-test using SPSS 25. Results indicate bullying perpetrators constitute the smallest population group. Victim profiles showed no significant demographic differences. Significant differences in perpetrator roles emerged based on gender (p < 0.001), educational level (p < 0.001), and age (p < 0.001). Bystander roles varied, with several dimensions showing significant differences based on specific demographic factors. These findings provide an empirical basis for targeted interventions and responsive school policies addressing bullying.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the structural validity of the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen (DTDD) within the Indonesian cultural context. At the preliminary stage, content validity and response process were assessed as part of a systematic translation verification to ensure item clarity and conceptual relevance. Even though satisfactory performance was reported, items 3 and 10 required further cultural refinement. Structural models were also tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Exploratory Structural Equation Modelling (ESEM). The results showed that the three-factor structures of Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy were supported as the most conceptually sound and statistically stable option. The bifactor solution reported interpretive limitations, such as low item loadings even though alternative models suggested acceptable fit. Subsequently, ESEM captured subtle cross-loadings, stating the psychological overlap between traits. These results supported the suitability of DTDD and offered an enhanced understanding of the structural complexity of dark traits to strengthen the relevance of cross-cultural personality assessment.

Abstract

This research is based on the performance of human resources, which is determined by the urgency of strengthening the capacity of human resources officials at the Office of the Ministry of Religion, Cimahi City, West Java. Efforts to develop the capacity of human resources or apparatus are focused on the availability of professional personnel who have technical abilities or competencies, which can be carried out through various activities and efforts to improve the performance of apparatus by optimizing dimensions related to strengthening the capacity of human resources in question. This research aims to determine the process of increasing the competency of human resources or apparatus within the Office of the Ministry of Religion of Cimahi City as well as other aspects that influence strengthening the capacity of human resources within the Office of the Ministry of Religion of Cimahi City. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods. The theory used is Grindle's (1980) theory of strengthening or developing HR capacity, including education and training, salary systems, working conditions, and human resource recruitment. The research results showed that strengthening the capacity of performance-based human resources at the Cimahi City Ministry of Religion Office had been carried out so that it had an impact on improving the performance of human resources in accordance with their main tasks and functions. Working conditions are relatively good, as seen from regular coaching between superiors and staff. The payroll system is in accordance with applicable regulatory procedures; human resource recruitment has gone through specified procedures but has not yet produced personnel with optimal capacity. Meanwhile, supporting factors, including adequate normative regulatory support, employee motivation, and cooperation between human resources, are quite good. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include budget shortages, the absence of post-training evaluation, and synergy between human resources that is not yet optimal.
