Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine Noeng Muhadjir’s perspective on constructing Islamic educational philosophy and its implications for developing scientific paradigms at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD). His ideas remain highly relevant amid the persistent dichotomy in Islamic education, which is still dominated by textual-theological reasoning and lacks empirical-rational contextualization. Design/methods/approach  – This study applies an abductive approach combining library (deductive) and field (inductive) research. Data from Noeng Muhadjir’s works and interviews with UAD leaders are analyzed philosophically to explore how his educational philosophy shapes UAD’s scientific paradigm, as reflected in the Science Unification guideline. Findings – Noeng Muhadjir’s Islamic educational philosophy, inspired by Ibn Rushd’s Peripatetic tradition, is based on monism, metaphysical realism, and theocratic humanistic ethics. He integrates empirical-rational (‘aqliyah) and divine-revelatory (naqliyah) reasoning to develop theocratic humanistic science and technology. At UAD, this thought underpins the unification of general and religious sciences grounded in Islamic and Muhammadiyah values (AIK) to advance science, humanity, and universal values. Research implications/limitations – This research advances the development of an Islamic educational philosophy that is empirical-rational in method yet spiritual in orientation. Based on Islamic Peripatetic principles, it positions Islamic education as integrating both religious and general sciences through empirical and experimental approaches. This perspective ultimately eliminates the dichotomy between wājib ‘ain (religious knowledge) and wājib kifāyah (general knowledge), viewing both as equally vital elements of a unified Islamic epistemology. Originality/value – Until now, much research and development in Islamic educational philosophy has tended to rely on Western philosophical frameworks rather than being grounded in authentic Islamic philosophical thought. In response, Noeng Muhadjir proposes Islamic Peripatetic philosophy as a genuine form of Islamic philosophy that serves as the foundation for developing an Islamic educational philosophy rooted in empirical and rational reasoning.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explore patterns of Islamic religious parenting within Muslim families in Yogyakarta, focusing on three typologies of parental involvement intensive, supplemental, and laissez-faire and their impact on children's spiritual development. The study seeks to contribute to understanding how different parenting styles influence children's religious formation and spiritual identity. Design/methods/approach – A qualitative case study design was employed, using semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations as the primary data collection methods. Five purposively selected parents were involved in the study, providing insights into their approaches to religious education within the family context. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes. Findings – The study found that intensive parenting promotes a deep internalization of religious values through consistent rituals, modeling, and emotional engagement. In contrast, supplemental parenting offers situational reinforcement but lacks routine and depth. The laissez-faire model, which emphasizes autonomy, often results in fragmented or superficial religious formation due to minimal parental involvement. These findings highlight the crucial role of home-based religious education in shaping a child’s spiritual identity. Research implications/limitations – The study’s limitations include its small, localized sample, which may not be generalizable to broader contexts, and the absence of children’s perspectives, which could provide a more comprehensive view of religious parenting dynamics. The findings suggest the need for community-driven programs to enhance parents’ religious and pedagogical competencies. Originality/value – This research provides valuable insights into the diverse ways in which Muslim parents in Yogyakarta engage with religious education, with implications for improving parental involvement in children's spiritual development. Future research should explore broader demographics and adopt longitudinal designs to better understand the evolving nature of religious parenting.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aimed to capture the student engagement and motivation in learning the Al-Qur’an Hadith  are often hindered by the abstract nature of religious material and the continued reliance on conventional instruction. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of digital video media in increasing affective, cognitive, and behavioral engagement of students in Al-Qur'an Hadith learning at Madrasahs in Central Kalimantan. Design/methods/approach – This study employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected from 155 students at MAN in Central Kalimantan using pre- and post-tests and analyzed through descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were obtained from interviews with five informants and analyzed thematically based on engagement indicators. Findings – The results show a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, with an average increase of 15.6% after the implementation of digital video media. This media enhances students’ motivation, focus, comprehension of abstract religious concepts, and multidimensional engagement, thereby improving the effectiveness and quality of Al-Qur’an Hadith instruction in digital learning environments. Research implications/limitations – The findings are context-specific to two Madrasahs in Central Kalimantan and may not be generalizable to all Islamic educational contexts. Variations in teachers’ digital literacy and students’ motivation levels may influence the effectiveness of implementation. Originality/value – This study offers empirical and pedagogical evidence on multimedia integration in Islamic education, demonstrating that digital video media enhances cognitive achievement as well as affective and behavioral engagement in Qur’an Hadith learning, thereby contributing a contextualized model for Islamic education in Central Kalimantan’s digital learning context

Abstract

Purpose – The misalignment between the profile with the body of knowledge (BoK) and the graduates’ learning outcomes (LO) of the PAI Study Program has caused the unclear educational objectives of the PAI study program, requiring the reconstruction of the PAI curriculum. This study aims to examine the reconstruction process of the PAI curriculum including the Profile, BoK, and LO of the PAI. Design/methods/approach –The research was conducted qualitatively using survey, interview, and documentation methods packaged in seminars, guest lectures, workshops, and Focus Group Discussions. The subjects in this study were 83 PAI Study Program managers from Sumatra, Jakarta and Jabodetabek, DIY and Central Java, East Java, and the Eastern regions; the interviews were carried out with 15 study program managers. The obtained data was processed through the stages of reduction, display, and interpretation. Findings – The results showed: 1) there are 6 profiles of Indonesian PAI after being reduced from 51 profiles, namely PAI teachers in schools/madrasahs, educational consultants, research assistants, administrators of educational institutions, Da’i/muballigh, and edupreneurs, 2) PAI’s Body of Knowledge consists of four scientific families: PAI science (what to teach), teaching science (how to teach), education and psychology (how to discipline), Research methodology, philosophy, language, technology, edupreneur (how to produce), 3) Graduate learning outcomes include in-depth mastery of PAI science, teaching, pedagogic, and PAI development, as well as how to teach PAI science effectively. Research implications/limitations – This research has implications for the importance of preparing graduate profiles based on tracer studies, rather than based on ‘personal wishes’; and Learning outcomes must be adjusted to the standardized BoK of the Study Program. Originality/value – the importance of profile mapping based on tracer studies, the significance of PAI’s body of knowledge in achieving PAI goals, and the importance of graduate learning outcomes for the expertise of PAI graduates.

Abstract

Purpose – Various studies have explored religious moderation in Indonesian higher education in some aspects. However, these studies remain limited by the lack of an overview capturing the field’s overall development in terms of implementation and evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to map the implementation of religious moderation across Islamic and general Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), classifying the strategies employed and evaluations in diverse institutional contexts. Design/methods/approach – A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, examining high-quality Scopus-indexed articles published between 2019 and 2025 using the Watase Uake software. Articles were systematically screened using standard exclusion and inclusion criteria, with selected studies subjected to thematic analysis. Findings – 21 articles were selected from an initial pool of 217 studies. These studies covered 41 HEIs, comprising 27 Islamic and 14 general HEIs. Five main strategies for promoting religious moderation were identified: academic integration, the optimization of the House of Religious Moderation (RMB), Pesantren, Madrasah Diniyah, and institutional policy. These strategies were evaluated in the academic literature across multiple dimensions, focusing on student, lecturer, approach, content, and comparative analysis. Research implications/limitations – This study is limited by the lack of cross-institutional comparison of strategies and the absence of real-time data for evaluating religious moderation practices. Future research should address these gaps through empirical and comparative studies. Originality/value – The study provides practical guidance for HEIs that have not yet optimally implemented religious moderation, and for those seeking to enhance or expand their current practices. It highlights the importance of integrating both traditional and contemporary mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of moderation in HEI.

Abstract

Purpose – This study maps stakeholder perspectives on the goals, content, and delivery strategies of Religious Moderation Education (RME) in Indonesian universities, and tests alignment between preferences and current practice. It responds to policy calls to move beyond course‑only provision toward campus‑wide mainstreaming. Design/methods/approach – A cross‑sectional online survey of 500 respondents (200 lecturers, 300 students) from public and Islamic universities used structured Likert‑type questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and cross‑tabulations. Findings – Respondents strongly endorsed core objectives: strengthening Pancasila‑based civic identity (85%), preventing conflict and radicalism (84%), and bridging religious–non‑religious perspectives (80%). Content priorities centred on interfaith harmony (M = 4.35) and civic‑constitutional values (M = 4.28), with intra‑Islam harmony also high (M = 4.12). Integrated cross‑curricular models received the highest effectiveness rating (M = 4.32) yet were less used than IRE‑only courses (41% vs 68%); campus‑culture programming was also effective (M = 4.05; usage 55%). These figures indicate a misalignment between stakeholder preferences and prevailing practice.  Research implications/limitations – Evidence supports system‑level integration of RME across curricula and campus culture, coupled with lecturer development and assessment. Cross‑sectional, self‑report data limit causal inference and generalizability; longitudinal and implementation studies are needed.         Originality/value – Provides a large‑N, multi‑stakeholder baseline and advances a goals–content–strategy framework not only as a practical policy tool but also as a conceptual contribution to the study of Religious Moderation Education (RME) and contemporary religious education more broadly. By analytically linking normative goals, curricular content domains, and delivery strategies, the framework offers a transferable lens for examining how religious education can balance identity formation with civic pluralism. It also guides institutional audits and policy design for inclusive, effective RME and underscores the need for system-level reforms to enhance the civic and pluralistic impact of religious education in diverse societies

Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the intersection of transformational leadership, pedagogical competence, and learning management innovation in teacher education. While these constructs have been studied individually, their integration remains underexplored, particularly in the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE). The purpose of this scoping review is to map existing literature, identify key themes, and highlight implications for developing teacher agency and future-ready pedagogical models in IRE. Design/methods/approach – The review employed Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework, refined by Levac, and aligned with PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A systematic search of the Scopus database (2016–2025) was conducted using Boolean combinations of keywords related to leadership, pedagogy, and innovation in teacher education. Studies that met inclusion criteria were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach. Findings – From 827 identified records, 33 studies were included, revealing three major themes: (1) transformational leadership works best in collaborative, distributed settings that strengthen teacher agency; (2) pedagogical competence grows through TPACK use, reflective practice, and cultural responsiveness; and (3) learning management innovation is effective when institutionally supported, though often limited by resistance and resource constraints. Overall, teacher agency consistently appears across the reviewed literature as a cross-cutting theme linked to adaptability and innovation, suggesting its relevance for strengthening leadership, pedagogy, and institutional improvement within IRE. Research implications/limitations – This research shows that strengthening teacher agency can guide theoretical development in IRE and inform practical improvements in leadership and pedagogy, though its reliance on a single database and its descriptive scoping design limit the breadth and depth of its conclusions. Originality/value – This paper offers an integrated lens on leadership, pedagogy, and innovation while proposing their contextual relevance for IRE. Embedding teacher agency in IRE can foster reflective, inclusive, and technologically responsive religious educators. The study contributes a foundation for future empirical research on leadership-driven pedagogical innovation in Islamic education.

Abstract

Purpose – This study addresses the psychological distress faced by married Muslim couples who experience infertility and involuntary childlessness, particularly due to intense social and cultural pressures. It aims to explore how Khusyu’ (deep devotion in worship) functions as a religious coping mechanism to reduce stress, anxiety, and stigma associated with this condition Design/methods/approach – A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to capture the lived spiritual and psychological experiences of the participants. The study involved eight purposively selected Muslim couples from Magelang Regency, Indonesia, who had been married for more than three years without having children. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, focusing on their religious practices and coping behaviors Findings – The results show that couples experiencing significant psychological distress engage in  Khusyu’practices, such as obligatory and additional prayers, supplication (du’a), voluntary fasting, and charity (sadaqah), as well as participation in Islamic study groups. These practices help reduce anxiety, foster acceptance of divine destiny, and build emotional resilience, while providing social support that mitigates stigma and strengthens marital harmony. Research implications/limitations – The implications of this study suggest that Khusyu’ as a form of religious coping can help childless couples manage psychological distress. Methodologically, the phenomenological approach enables an in-depth exploration of participants' spiritual and emotional experiences. However, given the qualitative nature of this study and the limited number of participants, the findings cannot be generalized to a broader population. Originality/value – This study provides a unique contribution by examining Khusyu’ as a specific religious coping strategy in the context of infertility among Muslim couples. Unlike previous research, which has focused broadly on religious coping, this study positions Khusyu’ as a central element in promoting psychological well-being and resilience within a distinct cultural and religious framework
