Abstract

The contemporary Islamic thought was preoccupied with the conflict between the tradition (al-turāth) and the modernity (al-hadāthah). In the midst of this polemic, there is a stream of Islamic Post-Traditionalism in post-reformation Indonesia that offers a cultural transformation without leaving behind the culture itself. This article aims to describe the format of Islamic Post-Traditionalism in the the school culture of Madrasah Aliyah Unggulan Darul ‘Ulum STEP-2 Kemenag RI-IDB Jombang and its implications for the madrasa curriculum formulation. The research method uses a qualitative-phenomenological approach by collecting data through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and documentations. The results of this study shows that there are elements of the authenticity (al-aṣālah) and the present (al-mu’āṣirah) in the madrasah culture indicating the continuity of tradition within transformation. This has implications for the formulation of the madrasa curriculum that based on the principle of the conservation and the hybridization, so students can follow the development in the modern world without leaving behind their own traditions.

Abstract

One of the values of Islamic moderation is equality. Equality in education is very important to ensure a just education process (equity) and equality. The Mu'ādalah pesantren is an exclusive educational unit, with an education system that is autonomous, independent and different from schools, madrasahs or other types of pesantren. This study aims to explore the values and practices of equality in Mu'ādalah pesantren inclusively. With an ethnographic research, Pesantren Al-Amien Prenduan Sumenep was chosen as the research locus. This research found that, Al-Amien pesantren is not only an institutionally equal Mu'ādalah Islamic Boarding School, but also has substance and practical equality itself. Spiritual values, integration of Islam and Indonesianness, and the implementation of local pesantren culture in institutional practices justify the essence of the equality of mu'ādalah pesantren vis-a-vis other educational institutions.

Abstract

Human resource input in higher education is required to have high order thinking skills (HOTS) which includes the ability to analyze, evaluate and create material. Thus, the existence of the college entrance test is one of the important instruments in selecting human resources. This article aims to explore the HOTS map on the Entrance Examination for State Islamic Religious Higher Education (UM-PTKIN) in the material of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in 2018 and the comparison of HOTS levels in the PAI material group examination. This article is also supported by the results of a literature review. The results of the study show that the UM-PTKIN item on PAI material spreads in the HOTS category and low-level thinking skills (LOTS). Akidah Akhlak Subject is the largest contributor and Al-Quran-Hadith as the lowest contributor to the HOTS category questions. The Islamic Religious Education Study Program (PAI) is a study program that is in great demand and its graduates are highly awaited to be able to sow Islamic understanding to answer various social, political and religious challenges in Indonesia. This article provides recommendations for UM-PTKIN policy makers to be able to increase the number of HOTS question compositions in subsequent selections in order to improve the quality of PAI student input in the following periods.

Abstract

This article reveals that in responding to the religious discrimination against them while studying at educational institutions, Aboge youths fight back. Instead of being silent and accepting of being the target of heresy labeling in schools, madrasas, campuses, and pesantren, Aboge youths develop various survival tactics and respond to the issues by engaging in mimicry and silent resistance. First, they perform mimicry in multiple identities, between NU and Aboge. Second, they pretend that they are menstruating to camouflage at pesantren but then secretly praying and starting the Aboge-style Ramadan fast on the next day. Third, they preten to do Sunnah worship to impress the next day they start the “obligatory fast” of Ramadan together with the majority. This paper is based upon a qualitative study employing in-depth interview and places the mimicry of Homi K. Bhabha and James C. Scott's silent resistance as theory, and the post-colonial as an approach. The results of this study founds that young Aboge who studied in the midst of the Muhammadiyah campus, they apparently are not becoming subordinate. They carried out mimicry by taking Muhammadiyah as the ordinate identity and utilizing the in-between space to survive. Apparently, the ordinate created a new space by constructing artificial identity towards the Aboge by defining them as NU community. This working paper produces an important finding in post-colonial studies, namely a third space that is different from the in-between space offered by Homi K. Bhabha. This third space is a new identity space that does not adopt identities of the colonizer nor the colonized, because the Aboge borrowed NU identity to perform mimicry when facing the ordinate.

Abstract

There are only few numbers of Islamic Economic Law program graduates that have been absorbed as industry practitioners. One of main focus for educational providers is the inadequate curriculum to support its graduates to get involved at any legal profession. Various studies related to the involvement of industry practitioners in curriculum development that are able to increase the absorption of alumni as practitioners are important starting points. This study seeks to solve problems related to what courses are required in a curriculum in order to be able to equip alumni with sufficient competencies. By using the ANP method which requires an industry expert as a respondent, we try to solve this problem. The number of respondents whose opinions were extracted was 10 consisting of practitioners of the legal profession, Islamic financial institutions and professional associations. The results of this study indicate that Legal Competence is the main highlight of the experts. Then Basic Arabic, Financial Statement Analysis, Fatwa Studies, Arbitration and Professional Ethics in the Law became the most important focus for additional courses outside the competencies agreed upon by the entire campus. As for the graduate profile, the most relevant based on the courses offered is Judges. Finally, the development that needs to be done to produce these graduates is Class Lectures.

Abstract

The harmony of multi-ethnic and religious communities in an area is always interesting to discuss because it can provide solutions to conflict-affected areas. This phenomenological study aims to analyze the adaptation process of multicultural values carried out by Pesantren Miftahul Qulub in building social harmony in multi-ethnic and religious village of Polagan, Pamekasan, Madura. This phenomenological research demonstrates that multicultural adaptation goes through local culture, moderate school of thoughts, outreach, and social capital. Some of these approaches are the actualization and dissemination of Islamic values and Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) spirit that makes pesantren so easily accepted and mingles within multicultural communities. Seen from a pedagogical perspective, Pesantren Miftahul Qulub emphasizes the community-based learning process. Therefore, this concept can be a reflection for other pesantren, that the curriculum and academic culture must be adapted to the needs of a diverse, dynamic and developing society.

Abstract

As an Islamic educational institution rooted in the history and culture of the archipelago, Pesantren have become the object of academic discourse within social sciences. Within various diverse social arrangements, pesantren have distinctive dimensions that distinguish one pesantren from another. Some of the objects of pesantren social studies include the social relationship between the pesantren and the community outside the pesantren, pedagogy in the educational process, and social changes as the impact of the presence of pesantren and their own elements. This article discusses the framing of social phenomena related to pesantren within the framework of Bourdieu and Giddens' theory of practices, which notably have different approach on structuration. Bourdieu applies structuration through power and Giddens through in the knowledgeability. The use of these two structuration paradigms can shed light on the preservation and changes in agent’s control. However, only conscious phenomena can be framed. Unconscious phenomena apparently cannot be framed in structuration and require assistance from other scientific disciplines, such as psychological anthropology, to explain the phenomena scientifically.

Abstract

This study investigates religious education practices through Kyai leadership characteristics as the caregiver as well as a decision-maker in pesantren. qualitative data are gathered through documentation, observation, and interview at Pesantren Bina Insani, Yogyakarta. The education at Pesantren Bina Insani has been well known as community-based education, derived from the aspirations of the community, and to meet their interests. As a community-based educational institution, the Pesantren is very dependent upon the initiative and charisma of the Kyai as the leader. The results demonstrate that Kyai Teguh’s charismatic leadership characteristics have turned into unwritten standards for people under his influence in managing the Pesantren and developing their social skills. From leadership theory perspective, Kyai Teguh’s characteristics are the rational grounds for his followers in terms of decision making, wok-ethics, and social interactions.

Abstract

Sufism is a self awareness, a spiritual vibration, a trajectory in the heart, a whisper of conscience, a feeling of longing that is difficult to express in words. Sufism needs to be integrated in the curriculum of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) as it can affect the process of shaping students' attitudes, behaviors and characters. This article explains the importance of Sufism values combined with PAI materials. Through a literature review of the Junior High School (SMP) Islamic Religious Education books for grades VII-IX, using a content analysis approach, it was found that the PAI materials in general were still textual in nature, and lacked the insertion of Sufism values. Hence, it is urgent to integrate Sufism values into the Islamic Education curriculum, especially at the junior high school level because junior high school students are prone to experiencing moral crises and the process of searching for identity. Gradually, the steps of Sufism which need to be carried out in delivering the PAI materials in junior high school are takhalli (cleansing oneself from bad qualities), tahalli (filling the heart with good qualities), and tajalli (opening of divine light that permeate into oneself). The integration of Sufism values into the Islamic Education curriculum can shape students’ good attitudes and behaviors. Thus, learning PAI material becomes more effective in shaping noble morals for students.

Abstract

UIN Jakarta, with its distinct characteristics, focuses on integrating Islamic and general education as a unity. This research focuses on the oldest faculty: The Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK, hereafter). This study aims to a) explore the concept of integration of Islamic and general education at FITK, and b) find out the extent to which lecturers at FITK understand the concept of integration. The approach used in this research was phenomenology. It employed the qualitative method to describe the concept of integration of Islamic and general education and reveal the extent of lecturers' understanding of scientific integration. The results showed that at the conceptual level, the paradigm of reintegration of Islamic and general education is an integration of Islamic knowledge and values, which is two-way: from secular sciences to Islamic values and from conventional Islamic religious materials to secular sciences. The study also found that scientific integration has long been present in the FITK academic environment. However, the concept of scientific integration itself does not appear to be a uniformity which causes many different interpretations from each study program, even from lecturers in the FITK environment. In addition, the concept of scientific integration has not been fully understood by each leader in the academic community of UIN Jakarta, mainly due to the lack of socialization and no appointment for specific institutions responsible for managing this integration process.
