Abstract

In education, teachers play a very important role in designing learning activities to engage students and ensure that learning objectives are conveyed effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine the development of Arabic writing in students studying calligraphy. This study was conducted at the Al-Faiz Islamic boarding school in Medan. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach and data collection techniques in the form of observation and interviews. Observations were conducted on twenty female students in grade X at the Al-Faiz Islamic Boarding School in Medan. Based on an interview with calligraphy teacher Ustadz Abimanyu, "In calligraphy learning, there are many types and styles of calligraphy that need to be learned, not to mention the differences in letter shapes, curves, and angles when writing. In addition, the students come from various school backgrounds, which makes the main focus how to increase students' interest in learning calligraphy, so that interesting and non-monotonous methods are needed so that students do not get bored easily." The impact on education is that it can train writing skills (maharah kitabah). The results of the study indicate that calligraphy instruction at this school can be considered quite effective, as evidenced by the improvement in the quality of students' Arabic writing.

Abstract

The school environment should ideally be a safe space for children to learn and develop social relationships. However, in reality, schools often become sites where bullying occurs, as represented in the short film Jaros Indzar by Khalid Fahad. This study aims to analyze the representation of bullying in the short film Jaros Indzar using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with Peircean semiotic analysis, focusing on the triadic relationship between sign, object, and interpretant. The findings indicate that Jaros Indzar represents various forms of bullying, including non-verbal, verbal, and psychological bullying. At the level of sign, five scenes were identified as representing non-verbal bullying, such as pushing, locking someone in, talking behind someone’s back, taking belongings, and making offensive gestures. At the level of object, five scenes represent verbal bullying in the form of insulting, threatening, blaming, cornering, and mocking. Meanwhile, at the level of interpretant, six scenes represent psychological bullying, including cynical stares, mocking laughter, sarcastic smiles, intimidation, and acts of instilling fear. This study demonstrates that Jaros Indzar presents a complex representation of bullying through visual and narrative signs, making the film a reflective and educational medium for understanding the impacts of bullying in the school environment.

Abstract

This study examines the use of hyperbolic language (mubalaghah) within the linguistic structure of the Qur’an and how such stylistic devices represent natural disaster phenomena occurring in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, as well as their connection to the cataclysmic earthquake of the Day of Judgment as depicted in Surah Al-Zalzalah. Hyperbole functions to emphasize meaning through deliberately exaggerated rhetorical expressions that evoke emotional, spiritual, and persuasive effects on the reader. This study outlines the concept of hyperbole in the science of balaghah, the forms that appear in Surah Al-Zalzalah, and the analysis of their rhetorical functions based on both classical and contemporary tafsir. The findings show that the use of hyperbole in Surah Al-Zalzalah not only enhances the aesthetic dimension of the Qur’anic language but also presents a powerful representation of natural disasters as a theological warning about the tremendous severity of the Day of Recompense. Thus, hyperbole serves as a bridge between the literary beauty of the Qur’an and the profound conveyance of its eschatological message.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and factors causing Arabic phonological errors in the Korean drama series Genie, Make a Wish. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with an analytical method using the distributional method and the immediate constituent technique. The data consist of Arabic dialogue utterances obtained from the Netflix platform. The results reveal phonological error categorized into four forms: consonant phoneme changes, vowel phoneme changes, phoneme omission, and phoneme addition. Consonant phoneme changes are the most dominant form of error, with the most frequent being the change of the phoneme /ق/ to /ك/ and the vowel phoneme /o/ to /a/. The main factor causing these errors is the interference of the Korean phonological system (L1) with Arabic (L2), particularly due to the absence of uvular, pharyngeal, and emphatic sounds in Korean. In addition, the limited learning process of Arabic in the context of filming production contributes to the actors’ insufficient phonological mastery when pronouncing Arabic dialogue.

Abstract

Learning Arabic involves several important elements that must be considered to ensure students understand and apply the material effectively. Arabic is a special language, especially for Muslims, as it is the language of the Quran and Hadith. Therefore, instilling Arabic language skills needs to begin at school age to ensure it doesn’t feel foreign to the public, especially among teenagers who are now more influenced by technological developments. However, interest in learning Arabic tends to decline due to monotonous and unengaging learning processes, such as focusing solely on questions and answers or using textbooks without varying learning media. This study aims to analyze an Arabic language learning model using the icebreaking method through Arabic songs as an effort to improve students’ language skills. Through this method, learning is expected to be more active, cheerful, and enjoyable, thereby restoring student concentration and fostering enthusiasm for learning. The ’esearch was conducted at MTs IRA Medan using observation, interviews, and classroom action methods. Results showed that the application of the icebreaking method in the form of Arabic songs was able to significantly increase students’ interest and language skills. Before the application of this method, many students felt bored and had difficulty understanding the Arabic material. However, after its implementation, there was an increase in student activity, participation, and understanding with a higher percentage of success than before. Thus, the use of song media in the ice breaking method can be said to be successful and effective in creating a fun and meaningful Arabic language learning atmosphere.

The development of digital technology has made it possible to utilize social media as accessible and engaging educational resources for students. Instagram is one of the popular platforms that can serve as an alternative educational tool to help students understand Arabic language material outside the classroom setting. This study adopted a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The research population consisted of eighth-grade students at MTs Al-Wassiliya 05 in Belawan. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation. The questionnaire was used to determine the frequency of Instagram use as a learning resource, as well as to gather students’ opinions on the learning content presented there. Interviews were also conducted with the Arabic language teacher and some students to obtain more in-depth information. Observation was used to monitor students’ engagement with the learning content, while documentation served as supporting data. The data was analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings revealed that most students benefit from the Instagram account @kursusarab.id as an additional learning resource. It also revealed that the content provided is engaging and easy to understand, and contributes to increasing students’ motivation to learn. Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between sound (intonation, stress, speech tempo), word choice, and contextual framing in shaping public interpretation of Ahmad Sahroni's controversial statement “tolol sedunia” within Indonesian political discourse. The research aims to describe how phonetic features and semantic connotations construct perceived meaning and to formulate more constructive communicative alternatives for sensitive public contexts. A descriptive qualitative approach is used through interpretative linguistic analysis supported by contextual triangulation of speaker identity, sociopolitical situation, and public audience reception. The findings indicate that even when delivered with flat intonation, the prominent stress on a pejorative lexical item reinforces an intentional insulting illocution, amplified by the speaker's authority as a public official amid heightened public distrust toward DPR policies. The study concludes that linguistic form and context interact dynamically to escalate negative social impact, and public communication should prioritize neutral diction and controlled prosody to maintain critical substance while reducing potential communicative conflict.

Abstract

This study addresses the difficulties students face in learning Ilmu Badi' due to varying levels of rhetorical complexity. Aiming to enhance pedagogical effectiveness, it classifies and organizes Ilmu Badi' materials based on Clifford Prator's levels of difficulty and explores similarities with Indonesian rhetorical styles using a contrastive approach. Sixteen Ilmu Badi' topics with Indonesian equivalents were identified and categorized as follows: Level Zero - Transfer: klimaks, antiklimaks, elipsis, antanaklasis, asindenton, kiasmus, and antithesis. Level One - Integration and Level Two - Differentiation: No topics identified. Level Three - Reinterpretation: anadiplosis and epanalepsis. Level Four - Overdifferentiation: Paronomasia and koreksio. Level Five - Division: rima, hiperbola, erotesis, antifrasis, and antithesis. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and contrastive analysis, the study uses library research to examine rhetorical parallels between Arabic and Indonesian. The results highlight the importance of sequencing Ilmu Badi' instruction progressively-from simple to complex-to support learner comprehension. This research contributes a structured model for Arabic rhetorical instruction and advocates for contrastive linguistic strategies in curriculum development. Future studies are encouraged to investigate how such structured teaching affects students' mastery of Arabic rhetorical forms.
