Abstract

The advancement of modern reproductive technologies, such as in vitrofertilization (IVF) and surrogacy, has provided medical alternatives for couples facing infertility issues. Despite their benefits, these practices raise significant concerns from the perspective of Islamic law, particularly regarding lineage (nasab), the sanctity of the womb, and the protection of offspring. This study aimsto analyze the permissibility of IVF and surrogacy within Islamic jurisprudenceusing a normative approach, and to assess their compatibility through the lens ofmaqasid al-shari’ah (the higher objectives of Islamic law). This research employs a normative qualitative method, drawing upon classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudential literature, fatwas from recognized Islamic legal institutions (such as the Indonesian Ulema Council and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy), and the theoretical framework of maqasid al-shari’ah. The study finds that IVF is permissible in Islamic law as long as it occurs within a lawfulmarital relationship and does not involve third-party donors. On the other hand, all forms of surrogacy—whether involving a genetic link to the surrogate or not—are prohibited (haram) due to their potential to compromise lineage, exploit women’s bodies, and violate the sanctity of the reproductive process. The findings reaffirm that Islamic law, through the objectives of maqasid al-shari’ah, places a strong emphasis on the preservation of lineage (hifz al-nasl) and the integrity ofthe family unit. Thus, modern reproductive technologies are only acceptable whenthey align with these fundamental ethical and legal principles. This study contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic jurisprudence and serves as a reference for formulating religiously appropriate policies in the face of evolving medical advancements. Abstract

This article aims to analyze the phenomenon of syncretism in the Rambu Solo ceremony in Tana Toraja, focusing on the chronotope of communication in the syncretism process bound by the dimensions of space and time. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a communication ethnography design, which involves data collection through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD). The data obtained were analyzed using thematic and narrative analysis techniques to identify the main themes that emerged in the social and cultural interactions of the Toraja people. This approach allowsresearchers to explore in depth the meaning and process of symbol negotiation in the Rambu Solo ritual. The results of this study, Chronotope plays an important role as a concept that binds space and time in the Rambu Solo ceremony, a death ritual that becomes a dialogical arena combining various aspects of social and religious life. This shows a real manifestation of kinship ties that arebound in space and time with ancestors that are passed down from generation to generation, as well as religious ties to divine power, both of which encourage cultural and religious syncretism. The syncretism that occurs is dynamic and dialogical, not a meaningless unification, but rather a process of interaction that maintains cultural identity rooted in the local religion of aluk todolo in dialectic with religious teachings as the official discourse of the state. This study emphasizes the importance of a dialogical and interdisciplinary approach in understanding complex cultural phenomena, especially those involving the dimensions of space, time, and religiosity in the contextof indigenous communities. Abstract

This article aims to analyze the paradigm shift in the study of orientalism through the thoughts of contemporary orientalists such as Karen Armstrong, Annemarie Schimmel, Martin Lings, John Obert Voll, and Charles Kurzman. This article attempts to show how their approaches correct the bias of classical orientalists by offering a more sympathetic, holistic, and internally based perspective on Islam. This research uses a qualitative approach through literature studies with descriptive analysis methods. This study finds that the paradigm shift from classical to contemporary orientalism was triggered by historical, religious, political, cultural, and intellectual factors after the end of colonialism. These contemporary orientalists emerged and brought major contributions such as a humanist approach that emphasizes an empathetic narrative of Islam, a deep spiritual and esoteric understanding of Islam, and a critical analysis of the dynamics of contemporary Islam in responding to modernity and democracy. Together, they challenge the stereotype of classical orientalism by showing the diversity, depth, and relevance of Islam in a global context. This article concludes that the thoughts of contemporary orientalists have represented a new generation of Islamic studies in the West that is fairer and more objective. They not only correct the misperceptions of past orientalism, but also pave the way for a more productive dialogue between Islam and the West. Keywords: Contemporary Orientalism; Classical Orientalism; Paradigm Shift.

Abstract

This study discusses the dynamics of nightlife tax policy in Makassar City, particularly in the Nusantara Street area, which is known as a center of nightlife activities and a location for covert prostitution. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study examines how Local Regulation No. 1 of 2024, which stipulates a 75% increase in nightlife tax, functions not only as a fiscal instrument to increase Local Own-Source Revenue (PAD), but also as a social regulatory instrument. The results of the study show that this policy has dual implications: on the one hand, it strengthens the political legitimacy of the city government in responding to the moral demands of the community, but on the other hand, it gives rise to unexpected consequences in the form of new negotiations between the government, nightlife entrepreneurs, and sex workers. High taxes actually encourage the capitalization of sex workers' bodies, widen the economic dependence of the surrounding community on the nightlife industry, and open up space for informal political compromise between entrepreneurs and officials. This study confirms that fiscal policy is never neutral, but is always linked to local social, political, and economic dynamics. The necessary follow-up is strengthening alternative policies based on a humanistic and inclusive approach, such as providing formal employment, economic empowerment programs for women, and more transparent and accountable supervision. Abstract

This article examines the religious dynamics of minority Muslim communities in East Amanuban District, South Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Despite living in a predominantly Protestant Christian community, the region's Muslim community is able to maintain its religious identity while contributing to the local social and cultural diversity. This study aims to: (1) outline the history of the entry of Islam in East Amanuban, (2) identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Muslim community, and (3) analyze the patterns of their social interaction with the non-Muslim majority community. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through field observations, interviews, and document studies, the study found that the main strength of the Muslim community lies in the relatively large number of mosques and the commitment of the community in preserving the teachings of Islam. The challenges faced include limited human resources, inadequate religious facilities, and the influence of local customs that sometimes contradict Islamic practices. On the other hand, the value of tolerance, social solidarity, and local cultural wisdom is an important capital for the sustainability of their Islamic identity. The results of this study emphasized the importance of strengthening religious institutions and cross-community cooperation to strengthen religious harmony in multicultural areas such as East Amandaban. Abstract

This study reveals the practical and discursive consciousness of religious moderation within students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri in the Cirebon region. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with 20 students who were actively involved in organizations representing four madrasahs: Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 and 2 in Cirebon City and Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 and 2 in Cirebon Regency. Additionally, data were collected through participant observation and documentation. The study found that practical consciousness, which encompasses tolerance, national values, non-violence, and respect for local culture, has become an integral part of students’ habituation. In contrast, discursive consciousness remains only partially reflective. It continues to rely on the authoritative discourse of institutions, meaning that students have not yet developed strong arguments to support the moderate practices they employ. These findings suggest that the internalization of moderate values still requires strategies to promote critical consciousness within the madrasah environment. Furthermore, this study bridges national religious moderation policies with students’ everyday practices, demonstrating both practical habituation and discursive consciousness among the younger generation, thereby enabling madrasah institutions to evaluate and strengthen students’ critical capacity.

Abstract

This study analyzed the collective identity construction of Pitu Ulunna Salu (PUS) in strengthening peacebuilding efforts in Mamasa, West Sulawesi. The reconstruction of PUS became a peace mission doctrine that reshaped public perceptions of brotherhood and harmony after the regional expansion conflicts, which had triggered ethnic and religious disintegration. The research employed a qualitative case study design, collecting data through in-depth interviews and secondary sources. The findings showed that the reconstruction of PUS cultural identity, as part of the historical alliance of traditional institutions served as a catalyst for reconciliation and conflict mitigation in Mamasa. The community’s adherence to traditional values and communal leadership was instrumental in maintaining social harmony, while youth were playing a pivotal role in the ongoing transformation of conflict. This study introduced a conceptual model of Cultural Identity-Based Peacebuilding, which integrated three key elements: traditional authority, collective memory, and youth participation. The model explained how indigenous identity reconstruction functioned not only as cultural preservation but also as a strategic sociopolitical mechanism for sustainable peace. The novelty of this research lay in framing local identity as an active agent in transforming post conflict societies rather than as a passive cultural symbol. A deeper understanding of PUS identity formation enabled the effective application of regional identity in peace processes, enhancing the sustainability of reconciliation. This study provided an empirical and theoretical contribution by bridging indigenous knowledge and contemporary peace studies, offering a replicable model for other multicultural post-conflict contexts.  Keywords: Conflict Reconciliation, Pitu Ulunna Salu, Social Construction, Peacebuilding

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a mandatory obligation for companies in Indonesia to balance economic, social, and environmental interests, particularly for communities living around production areas that often experience negative impacts from industrial activities such as air pollution, economic inequality, and health problems. This study aims to explain the extent of community involvement in CSR implementation in Biring Ere Village, Pangkep Regency. The research employed a qualitative method using interviews and observations conducted in 2025. The forms and levels of community aspirations were analyzed based on Arnstein's ladder of participation. The findings reveal that, in the early stages, community participation in CSR program planning was limited to village officials. However, there is now a growing trend of broader participation involving people from diverse backgrounds. These results indicate a shift toward a more participatory CSR model, which contributes to greater program effectiveness and sustainability for local communities.

Abstract

Oral health is a vital component of a child's overall quality of life. The 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) revealed that the prevalence of dental caries exceeded 88%. In Luwu Regency, caries rates among schoolchildren remain high. This study aims to analyze the impact of peer education on tooth-brushing behavior among students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) 11 Bonelemo, Bajo Barat, Luwu. The research employed a quantitative experimental approach, with 38 students from grades 3–5 serving as participants, divided into two groups: treatment and control. Class leaders were trained as peer educators to deliver tooth-brushing education grounded in the Health Promotion Model (HPM). The results showed significant improvements in tooth-brushing frequency and quality in the treatment group compared with the control group (p<0.05). It confirms the effectiveness of peer education in encouraging children's health behaviors. In the madrasah context, this approach aligns with Islamic values that emphasize cleanliness, as reflected in the saying of the Prophet Muhammad SAW: "Cleanliness is part of faith."
